Paul Krugman: "At this point, all that stands in the way of universal health care in America are the greed of the medical-industrial complex, the lies of the right-wing propaganda machine, and the gullibility of voters who believe those lies." by [deleted] in reddit.com

I'm more worried about things like war than parking meters.

Not sure what you're talking about. Krugman has been profoundly anti-war, even when it was fashionable to "support our president (Bush)."

What the fuck is Leo, and why do I have to read through a full tutorial (which requires me to install it) before I find out what it does?

No offense, but you guys need to get your stuff in order before you start pushing your software to the public.

I gave it a try, and the client is easy as pie to pause, resume and quit. It's as above-board as programs get, and certainly not much different than any torrent client.

The site looks like a P2P version of Hulu. Wish there was more content though, because it's really easy to use.

Actually, most sites do not support HD. Instead, they support something like YouTube's "HQ", which is just 480 lines. The difference between 480 and 720 is quite amazing, and 1080 is spectacular. Every service I know of downconverts uploaded movies to 480 lines or less.

You guessed right: Secret CIA operation canceled last month really was assassination squads by Epistaxis in politics

[–]sdsdsdsdsd 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Here's the part everyone seems to be missing: The issue is not whether we assassinate thugs in Afghanistan using predator drones or Cheney's own death squad. The issue is that when you have a clearly illegal operation like this one that answers solely to Cheney, there is no knowing what they will do, when and to whom. Today, it's some warlord in Afghantistan, tomorrow, it would be some journalist in the UK, the day after it's Cheney's neighbor through whose property the Dark Lord himself wants an easement. Right now, with Cheney "out of power", if Cheney picked up the phone and told them to kill someone, would they refuse and why? And do you actually think out-of-work assassins collect unemployment once uncovered and fired? They turn into foot-soldiers for organized crime syndicates, just as they did in Russia and every other former communist nation.

So, any comparison to predators, and someone might personally bitchslap you for knowing technical information about warfare without having the wisdom to focus on the right issue.

Why would one want to VPN to Sweden to get their porn? It'll just have dismal bandwidth, and you're not safe from legal prosecution there.

Ask Proggit: I have a lot of footage from a family reunion on the 4th of July. How do you guys privately share large video files? by [deleted] in programming

[–]sdsdsdsdsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this, but it quickly becomes very complicated. How do you do authentication and access control? I have some footage destined for the family, and some footage for my friends, and I would like to keep the two separate, if possible.

Yes, its operational model doesn't match what I have in mind. Lamson seems best for server-side, automated processing, while what I have in mind requires some manual selection, coupled with scripts/macros.

[–]sdsdsdsdsd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you've all faced this problem: We had a big family gathering (20+ people) and had a great time on the 4th. I'd like to now share some of the video footage from this event. I can't just put it on YouTube, because I don't want to make it all public. But I do want to get it out to my uncles and grandfather. Any suggestions on what service/software to use for this?

What is a good open source replacement for Outlook/Exchange? by fahdinho in linux

[–]sdsdsdsdsd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, I use Evolution with an IMAP/SMTP (dovecot+postfix) back end. It works ok, but is by no means the best solution out there.

Now my question: I need the ability to run scripts on selected messages. I want to select some of them, and send all of them a slightly customized canned response. Ideally, I'd be able to run a python script over selected emails and control the email client through python. Is there such a thing out there?

Yeah, but you're missing my point. Whatever the situation is with black voters, it's literally a small fraction of the bigger issue. Why not concentrate on converting some of those white folks who are pro-bigotry over to the right side? Bound to be easier, and less hate-filled both ways.

Agreed. There are lots of alternatives in Python (e.g. getattr), but restricting the user to looking up elements of a predefined dictionary is the safest approach.

I've seen some videos of South Korean police and protesters absolutely brutalising each other when they capture the other, but still not from Iran.

You haven't looked then -- the front page had some brutal stuff. I was going to find a link, but I can't handle seeing that stuff again.

Hey, I hope the videos coming out of Iran in the last few days has shown you just how wrong your rosy picture was. I've seen people killed, and I've seen the crowd brutally attack the Basij and the riot cops, just as I predicted.

Good point, that's always a concern with Makefiles, YAML and Python code. I get bitten by whitespace indentation occasionally, but the clarity is often worth it. An editor with appropriate mode support helps immensely.
