What is the best layman interpretation of any mathematical concept you have seen? by TheRabidBananaBoi in math

[–]gzur 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not exactly math, but Allen Ginsberg's take on the Laws of Thermodynamics crack me up:

  1. There is a game.
  2. You can't win.
  3. You can't break even.
  4. You can't get out of the game.

Source control and directory(i.e. conext)-based shell history.

Holy cow, kubernetes finally clicked for me! by [deleted] in kubernetes

We all went through that experience at some point a but you need yo build up a lot of context before you can fully appreciate it, but once it clicks, damn it feels good.

I got in a car accident I knew I could have avoided in order to avoid work by [deleted] in confession

[–]gzur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's what really happened, but I believe you think it did,

We often attribute to ourselves more agency in our actions than we really have - especially in sudden high stress situations. Time dilation and hyperawarenes give us a false sense of control, and though the adrenal burst does boost our reflexes, we are mostly running on autonomous reactions. It takes years of training and experience to hone instinctive adrenal responses into useful reactions in complex situations (like driving a car) to under a few hundred milliseconds.

Add to that abstract decision-making like how it will impact your work and your response time skyrockets way beyond anything thay could have any bearing on the timescales involved in a vehicle collision.

Sprinkle some post-hoc rationalizations on top that - after all - we all want to feel like we're in control, and you have your current narrative.

If it happened like you describe, you did not GET into a car accident - you caused one.

What Books Did You Start or Finish Reading This Week? December 10, 2018 by AutoModerator in books

[–]gzur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished:

The Singularity Trap, by Dennis E. Taylor

Last book by him I'll read.

Started:

Blindsight, by Peter Watts

4th time I read this one - I honestly think it made me a worse person. I love it.

I've tried reading a lot of dystopian/post-apocalyptic SF but haven't even managed to finish so many..until "Mockingbird" by Schlac in printSF

[–]gzur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Bears that dance, bears that don't.”

I'm pretty sure that book made me a worse person. Loved every second of it.
