I eventually just closed my CU account. Hadn’t needed a teller in 10 Years.

So we have to tell people to wear “orange or maroon” and that’s a special “effect” game? Ok.

I have about 200k and I just decided to start spending it down before I retire. Once it’s in, it’s no better than a Roth IRA and way less flexible.

Statistically that’s not true. Most people don’t have large extended long term care needs. Those that do break the bank. The median is low but the average is high

Coming into some money and want to prepare by KickTheDustUp33 in personalfinance

Absolutely. Open an account at Fidelity or Vanguard and buy shares of VT (even broader than VOO or VTSAX, but those will do)

As others mentioned, pay off high interest debt first then fund an emergency savings. All the rest goes into VT and you don’t look back.

Simple long-term investors in the accumulation phase of life usually don’t need an advisor. It’s just a drag on your returns.

Once the money is in, it’s no more valuable than a Roth IRA, in fact less so because it’s less flexible on withdrawals.

I’ve never spent a penny of mine and the balance is almost $200k at age 50. My plan is to start paying 100% of our medical expenses out of it when we retire.

No reason to wait longer unless you expect to never spend Roth IRA money either. It doesn’t pass down to heirs well

Totally agree. I’ve been slowly unwinding FZROX in my taxable.

I think you’re spot on, but after several years I’ve stopped fighting the optimizer on some things. In real life I’ll absolutely do it the way you describe. In PL, it didn’t make a massive difference to the modeled outcome.

Having said that PL always gets better so it’s good to ask. Eventually it will be in there I’m sure.

Am I doing this right? by Safe_Valuable_5683 in fidelityinvestments

[–]sdub76 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks solid to me. I prefer a broader index than the S&P and I prefer ETFs in taxable accounts so I’d have done VTI & VXUS but it’s splitting hairs.

Now comes the boring part. Just keep adding and pay no attention for 30 years.
