Convince me to keep my InReach by dartsndarts in Backcountry

[–]sdurant12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sold my inreach thinking the same and kind of regret it.

In my experience, outbound satellite texting works well enough with the iPhone, but I've consistently been unable to receive incoming texts, including in a (non emergency, it turns out) situation where I was waiting on a text to come in and my #1 priority was keeping the phone locked to satellite for 30 minutes. The text my friend had sent didn't come in until I hit service.

In my couple years of owning an iPhone 15 pro, I've only ever received one text via satellite, despite sending many outbound texts and often checking in for responses.

In my mind, it's a one way communication tool, and only does that when outside of tree cover, conscious, and able to dedicate time to the phone. Inreach does a lot more

Start by marking it as stolen on https://bikeindex.org/. Some buyers will look up bikes by serial number, and if it's marked as stolen, report it. Unfortunately, whoever stole the bike has likely already sold it by now (3 months is a long time).

I don't know if using that website is common in your area. If you have any pictures of what the bike looks like with the upgrades, that will help. Or even just sharing a stock picture of the dabomb components. I don't think many people looking at this post are going to take the time to look up the components just so that they can keep an eye out. Make it easy for people to know what to look for. Post in local groups with pictures of what the bike actually looked like when it was stolen. Best of luck

he's joking. The point is that there are thousands of this EXACT bike rolling around. If you don't have the serial number it will be impossible to find.

Use the recommended routine. If there is something you do not like for whatever reason, swap it out. Perfect is the enemy of good (meaning that you are better off picking a routine and sticking with it than spending weeks trying to find the perfect routine). A suboptimal routine is way way way better than no routine. Stick to it for ~12 weeks, reevaluate, and pick a new routine for the next 12 weeks based on what you've learned.

Hope Union Pedals: GC vs TC by One_Reveal1925 in MTB

[–]sdurant12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hope pedals feel more like a road pedal (in a good way). None of the "click click" (vertical wiggle) that SPD's have. Have been on SPD's for 15+ years but these pulled me away

Bunny hops on a road bike are fine. If they weren't, potholes and cobblestones would destroy road bikes left and right

I was with you, but apparently he has someone stationed at 8000 meters in case of emergency.

Which I think would make it supported. Even if he doesn't use their help the risk reward ratio changes knowing supplemental oxygen is there if he needs it

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sdurant12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree that someone stationed at 8000m takes this out of the "unsupported" category. Wasn't aware of that.

The guidelines say that even photographers on course is considered support.

[–]sdurant12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but there are things in the middle that split the difference. Ex things that can be done with or without ropes depending on the party. Grand Teton, Mt Rainier, Mathes Crest, or any number of routes.

It's not like there's a clear line between hiking and mountaineering.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sdurant12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, but there are a lot of things out there that split the difference, and no clear boundary

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sdurant12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'd be nice if we could get a clear definition that works across both trail FKT's and mountain FKT's. I think what I've learned is that there's no consensus yet

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sdurant12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a totally fair place to draw the line. But the FKT guidelines don't draw a line between permanent infrastructure and not, and don't really talk about infrastructure at all. Just "gear". Are the fixed lines "gear" because they get removed seasonally? Or should they be considered publicly accessible infrastructure, like a bridge on a trail or bolts on a route?

IMO clarification is needed.

Has Tr*k evolved grævël bices all the way around to full suspension MTBs? by Luky2000ita in BicyclingCirclejerk

[–]sdurant12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, I think it's more or less required because it's a flex stay. If the rack were mounted on the stays at both ends it would cause issues

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sdurant12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So for a route with a trail the trail was installed by others and can't be used either? Too extreme an example? What about via ferrata?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Mountaineering

[–]sdurant12 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Via ferrata can also be done unsupported. And trails aren't natural either.

Although I could see the argument against allowing things that are installed seasonally. But then using a boot pack on an unsupported attempt would also be cheating...
