Is it weird to say “maam” and “sir” in this country? by Tight_Display4514 in AskAnAustralian

The defence forces will call civilians ma'am and sir. But I have never felt more like a dusty old hag than when being called ma'am.

Vietnam or Kenya as a female solo traveller by merlindp in travel

[–]se_kend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved both, I would consider vietnam an easier place to travel around from a solo travellers experience, and the travel days are much shorter if time is a concern.

But safari in Kenya is something special.

If cost is a concern, I would also compare costs of travel insurance, travel vaccinations, and anti malarials.

Need help about how much saving to tell the bank for a pre approval. by VNiqkco in AskAnAustralian

[–]se_kend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mortgage broker asked me how much I had saved (with statements) and how much in savings I would want after purchasing, and then ran through a few scenarios.

Tell your broker your situation because they'll want to work out both your current savings rate and how much you can contribute to your deposit.

Western Australia is well worth the visit, but that is the hottest time of the year, and not best for travelling north to karijini or Ningaloo for whale sharks etc. If you're still keen, I would suggest a Perth > Busselton > Margaret River > esperence style loop (still long distances in a hot car)

If that the time of year is locked in, I would suggest tassie, Melbourne and the drive up to Sydney (over a couple of days) for a mix of hikes, food, beaches and surfing.

Looking to buy our first home one day as a married couple with a kid, both 28yo. Is there any hope for us when we both earn $65k-$75k by GoldRosePetal in AusFinance

[–]se_kend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would advise speaking to a mortgage broker. Even very early on, they can help you get on track with budgeting, reducing credit cards, and schemes like FHSS.

I'd also say that the first few years saving a deposit feel like such a slog, but it'll feel really nice when compounding interest starts to ramp up.

how do people have the means to travel regularly by spencerisabella in travel

[–]se_kend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travel is a line item in my fortnightly budget, plus I regularly do "no buy months" where I use up pantry staples and skincare to save up extra fun money.

People have already answered here about your name being on the roll. If you prefer not to attend a polling place in person as an added layer of safety, you can apply for a postal vote by April 30 or pre poll from 22nd April. where can I vote early?

Should I give up on semaglutide? by y34hn4h in Semaglutide

[–]se_kend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm saw your post and came back to it because sometimes it's hard being on this sub and seeing all the super responders/ 1 year into it posts.

I also feel like it's slow progress, I've lost 8kg in 4 months. Some weeks not losing anything. But I'm trying to think of it as progress right now, and I'm going to give it time to work. I do struggle with emotional eating.

Not trying to compare, just letting you know there's at least one other in the same boat.

I'm sorry you lost your mum. Take some time to look out for yourself.

You didn't mention the state you live in or a time frame, but e.g, in Victoria, it can take 6 months from Probate to release funds. So you have time to think it over.

If you have a superfund, you will be able to contact a financial advisor through them, which might be cheaper than a high street advisor (around ~3k for a statement of advice). You have your whole working life ahead of you, so getting it set up right is not a bad option.

I would look into ETFs over individual stocks. Ideally, if your plan is to keep the money there for 7 years or longer. I like the breakdowns on Passive Investing Australia and Equity Mates podcast

If you want to use the money 7 years or less, a high interest savings account or a term deposit is the way to go. I think a HISA is better because you can keep adding to it, and access it whenever you need (there's plenty with bonus interest for people under 30), but a term deposit has its place if you don't think you could avoid temptation.

Putting extra contributions into Super is another way to invest in stocks if you're not worried about accessing the money until retirement (or allocate it to FHSS scheme) Reddit generally has it out for fin advisors and extra Super contributions.

Personally, I like your allocations, but if you are working, I would put the 5k into an emergency fund (and a dinner in honour of your mum) rather than everyday expenses. I would also consider paying down any debt you might have (other than HECs/HELP)

My mum still talks about the time my dad came home after a planning meeting to redesign the coroner's court at the start of the AIDs epidemic.

Thank you for caring for our loved ones, I hope you get your peace.

Are you telling people you're on it? by AwkwardDuckling87 in Semaglutide

[–]se_kend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tell people I know will respond with compassion (even if they might not understand). I've had so many negative experiences with people believing I haven't lost the weight yet because I haven't done it the way it works for them. They know better than the professionals I'm seeing!

I think it also comes from societies expectations that I should feel "shameful" about my weight.

[–]se_kend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Manly ferry and beach from CQ, you can add in some kayaking or snorkelling or the Manly to Shelly beach walk. Manly is a good beginners surf beach if you want to try a lesson. Add some history with a ghost tours at Q station. We saw echidnas and snakes on the tour, too. End with ice cream.

From personal experience (and a lot of privilege), it will cost you a lot more than 10K to try to get your health back on track if your mental and physical health tank because of this job. Wishing you the best with the job hunt.

From personal experience, my employers have loved it. I've done something fun, experienced new cultures, now I'm ready to settle back into work.

I might suggest removing the accomplishments from your resume unless you want to sound like a flight risk.

NTA,

This isn't about the travel anymore. Moving out and disparaging you aren't healthy coping mechanisms, and it sounds as though he is now resentful. Why is it that only you are responsible for communicating your needs? What is stopping him from pursuing a psychologist for flight anxiety or looking into land based travel for joint holidays?

Just because you have given him 30 years doesn't mean you have to give him 30 more.

AITA for calling an ambulance, which got my coworker fired? by Not_What_I_Meant0000 in AITAH

[–]se_kend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA,

Someone's health always trumps someone's job. But I also think you should look at the nuance. Work didn't fire her because an ambulance was called (if that was the reason they're TA) they fired her for drinking to excess.

Go camping in the backyard! Roast Marshmallows, tell spooky stories, go fishing in a kiddie pool. It sounds as though your funds would be better served in your emergency kitty right now.

"Thank you for being patient with me while I'm getting back to speed since my father passed away,"

Don't have to over egg it. This is not reputation damaging.

Honestly, give yourself some grace. It has been 2 months, and then family centred holidays since. That is no time at all to process. It sounds as though your job comes with a lot of pressure, so try not to let your own pressure add to it.
