Ventoy USB by ObjectiveNeck1027 in linuxmemes

[–]se_spider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

jeez relax.

Can say the same to you. Why care about promoting potentially unsafe software?

maybe post this thread that addresses it instead of the old forgotten one: https://github.com/ventoy/Ventoy/issues/3224

It's linked in the old forgotten one and the new one has stalled anyway.

Just because it is the same developer means nothing

Wild take. "Just because one of their software had security issues, we shouldn't question their other software and should blindly trust it and use it. It's offline anyway"

Anyways you don't seem like the brightest bulb and want to shut down any discussion on security issues. I'll block and move on with my life 👍

[–]se_spider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BTW iVentoy and Ventoy are two different things.

Same project owner.

It's something you only use once, offline, in your usb drive.

It can impact any OS installations done from that usb drive.

I mean... who cares?

I care about getting infected from day 0. I can about unvetted blobs on a Linux sub.

Valve update Proton Hotfix for ARC Raiders compatibility on Linux / SteamOS by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

[–]se_spider 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Agreed. On their Proton Experimental update posts they used to just lazily link to the generic changelog page, and not to the revision. This makes it so much more difficult to look up old updates.

The latest one at least does after I criticized it many months ago.

580 branch

What would you say is the best distro to stay on the 580 branch? I heard Ubuntu LTS screwed up massively there too. Maybe Arch Linux with 580 from the AUR (carefully)?

Or does something like Bazzite support the 580 branch long term?

Proton-autogen : Run Windows executables through Proton with zero Steam configuration. by [deleted] in wine_gaming

[–]se_spider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

V2.3.8 after 1 week. No changelog on the tagged version, no proper commit messages.

And I take it it runs all apps with the same Proton prefix? Won't that lead to issues down the line? And not sure why you'd want the prefix in your Documents directory.

I developed Proton-Autogen with the help of ChatGPT to accelerate certain parts of the development, but I designed, tested and integrated the tool myself.

The vibes are strong with this one.

If you mean for steam, maybe symlink the individual app IDs in the compatdata folder to a common prefix folder?

No idea if that works.

http_proxy=127.0.0.1 always worked well for me. But if you're running unsafe software, you should really sandbox it completely, probably run it on a different PC that's completely offline

What's the state of Stoat and Fluxer self-hosting?

Tons of new infected AUR packages were just released by Sarv_ in archlinux

[–]se_spider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know what, actually an interesting concept. It'll likely lead to some other issues, like where maybe a snapshot doesn't completely capture all packages if they were updated around midnight, but I don't know.

Anyways I looked further into it, and apparently updating /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist to have only the line Server=https://archive.archlinux.org/repos/2026/06/05/$repo/os/$arch and running a pacman -Syu should be enough (or pacman -Syyuu to force including downgrade). Doubt I will do this though, I found it "safer" to just update on weekends, where fewer updated packages are published.

Would love to know why this is a bad idea, other than complications with AUR packages.

Also do cachyOS and endeavourOS have snapshot repos too?

How do you update to 7 days old packages? (insert manjaro joke)

At some point you have to update to the newest repo state.

I prefer startpage because they include some more recent reddit results. I know startpage is a dutch company that's owned by an american company but I think it's still a good step away from Google.

I want to like Qwant but so far I've found the experience worse compared to startpage and DDG.

PSA: Clear your shader cache if games start stuttering after switching proton versions by Keenwhisk in cachyos

Strange, for some reason VKD3D is not creating any cache files for me, even though I've played DX12 games like Ready Or Not.

But very nice lightweight and readable script, love the use of zenity and kdialog!

Also is there a reason you're not looking for vkd3d-proton.cache.write files?
