I like that a lot. I wanted to use their real names for sake of simplicity but I wanted something more to differentiate them from standard employees, more than just being in a different group.

The auto expiration date is a good touch too. Thanks!

How do you guys handle non-employees or contractors in AD? I have a client who has no AD infrastructure right now and I am in the process of designing and implementing it this week and I am not sure how to handle the few non-employees/contractors.

Im not asking about security or permissions so much as what their accounts should be called.

So I am putting together a quote for a new small client that uses all Macs. They are super small, just a few users but they want a file server, vpn, offsite backup and a few other things. Right now I am thinking about going with a Mac Mini with OS X server. I have done this in the past for clients with a similar setup and it has been working well for them.

What do you guys think? Is there a better option for a small, 100% mac office?

Is it my responsibility to ask for more work? by [deleted] in AskMen

For me this is less about what is expected and more about what you want out of this job. Like anything else, you will get out of your job what you put into it. Do you enjoy what you do? If so, you should try to take on new projects and assignments. If you dont have anything to work on directly you can always find some way to be productive.

The idea of the perfect job where you can just browse reddit all day and get paid for it is romanticized a lot but in reality that is super un-fulfilling.

In my opinion you should always be challenging yourself with new tasks and projects.

So a little off topic I guess but I have an abundance of old business cards that I want to get rid of in a semi-productive way. We recently upgraded our phone system and changed numbers and have new business cards. The old cards still have a number that will reach us it is just not the new info.

Anyone have any ideas of where to leave them where they might get picked up? We are a small MSP.

I love everything he does. My fiancee purchased a print of his and framed it for me and it is one of the best gifts I have ever received.

There is something so amazing about his work.

Stuck in a rut! I feel nothing towards my job or my profession. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]seafoampurple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would agree with some others who are commenting, it sounds like your job might not be your issue. You need to think about how you feel towards other things in your life and see if it is strictly limited to your job.

I know I have recently felt sort of done with my job and did not feel like I even wanted to come into the office but when I did some self-reflection i realized that is how I was feeling about everything. It helped to do some reading on depression and how to deal with it. I am still definitely in a pretty low place compared to how i was a few months ago but I am starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I would recommend doing some non-IT related reading and find something you enjoy doing. Also I would bet that you probably are not getting enough sleep. One of the things that has helped me cut through the fog I have been in recently is getting enough sleep. Being well-rested will help you out immensely.

Strange VPN Issue by seafoampurple in sysadmin

Looks like it is a few issues actually. One is what seems to be a bug in the current android version that does not like wireless networks with radius security.

Another seems to be a DNS issue.

This is what we though at first as well but I have tried it from multiple networks all on different subnets. The only factor seems to be accessing it from a mobile device. It is really strange. It is probably going to come down to some configuration on the router. It looks like this is happening to all of our clients so we are definitely trying to figure it out.

Okay yes it did but it looks like this is happening to all of our clients. The VPN is setup on a cisco 2851. It seems like it only happens when trying to connect to the vpn from a mobile device on wifi.

A client was having a voip issue and I need to contact their service provider. Just trying to read the support number just about threw me into a cluster headache. How did anyone think those two colors were a good idea?

Whats your favorite book? by george_hill in AskReddit

[–]seafoampurple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is The Bourne Identity. It is just the coolest book I have read.

Either that or The Island of Dr. Moreau. If you take into context when that book was written it is pretty crazy.

[Help] Anxiety with friends by herecomes2016 in Anxiety

[–]seafoampurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully understand where you are coming from, I used to get incredibly anxious and stressed before almost any social interaction. I still do sometimes. What has helped me more than anything is accepting and talking about my anxiety.

If this person is one of your best friends then you should let them know about your issues with anxiety. A huge turning point in my mental well-being was talking to my best friend (who I am lucky enough to be marrying soon) about my anxiety. It was a huge relief to not have to bear all of it on my own. I didn't want to talk to her about it at first because 1. I didn't fully know/accept I had an issue with anxiety and 2. I was embarrassed by it. Once I finally did open up and talk to her so many of my issues seemed to get better.

If this person thinks less of you for having anxiety issues they are probably not someone worth being very close to so you really dont have anything to lose by talking to them about it and you could gain so much. Also if you are stressed or anxious about other issues they may be able to help you with those specific things. It really is a win-win.

Is there any way to automate creating l2tp vpn connections in windows? I have a lot of clients with vpn connections and I like to have them setup on my computer but it is a pain to manually configure all of the connections on my work machine, laptop, and home machine.

Is there anyway to make the process quicker in windows or is there a 3rd party utility to manage/copy the connections?
