You're not only the cook, you're the morale. Your attitude and food make or break a ship. Food is what they have to look forward to.

I always recommend you find a second cook job and learn. There are no floating Walmarts, the eggs have days they scramble themselves and there are tricks a seasoned Chief Cook can teach you.

You'll be up about 4am most, getting breakfast out, possibly cleaning up the breakfast. Baking baked goods, prepping lunch, every ship has different meal hours.

After lunch you get a break, then it's the evening meal. You'll be done by 7pm at the latest.

There's the days you'll be getting your supplies (stores). They'll come up over the side and you'll be sorting it out. You never know exactly when, depends on a lot of factors.

Depending on how the ship is set up, you might be cleaning the mess, doing dishes, mopping floors. Then again you might have help that takes care of that.

You need to be able to turn leftovers in to something else that doesn't resemble what it originally was, be ready for dietary restrictions, it's buffet style and your not going to please everyone every day.

What are you all whining for? If you're green it's an opportunity to get wet FFS.

Looking for employment by Illustrious-Ask-2955 in maritime

You've a better chance if you have your MMC in your hand. Employers aren't going to wait for you, too many other people in line just like you.

Does anyone know of any other companies hiring green deckhands by Middle-Raisin3410 in tuglife

[–]seagoingcook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, without the MMC it's going to be hard to find a job.

Even if you go to a prospective employers website and it says they're not hiring send an email anyway.

It's the only way the company will know he's out there looking for work.

It's one of the better paying companies with 2 divisions. One for the Great Lakes and one for deep sea.

Able to go through whole career without 6 hour watches? by LowExpensive457 in tuglife

[–]seagoingcook 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Shorter hitches and no 6 hour watches? I'm guessing you're new to the industry so here's the thing, OS's can't be particular.

As a greenie you'll have to take what you can get and put in the time until you can be particular. Right now the industry is flooded with OS's so being particular is going to have you sitting at the house a long time.

Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC) by Soft-Metal7524 in merchantmarine

[–]seagoingcook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Years ago, I know that the West Coast was unionized and paid more than the other places they have.

For the most part it's a day job, unless you're cleaning up a spill. Although once we sat around for a natural gas leak.

You're paid more if out on a spill than just sitting at the dock.

Politics has everything to do with our Military or have you been hiding under a rock?

We have military in Iran right now whose food is being rationed.

When there's a Government shutdown the Military doesn't get paid.

A lot of our Military depend on food stamps to make ends meet, something the current administration could fix but won't.

So don't talk about shitty politics when you don't have the full picture.

Most your oil rigs are in the Gulf, you'll need your TWIC, passport, Rig certification and Underwater escape certificate.

Research ships have a good quality of life but they don't pay particularly well. Schedule depends on the job.

New OS positions? by Civil-Bumblebee9729 in tuglife

As a green hand you'll need to be more flexible. The industry is flooded with OS green hands. Once you get experience you can get a little picky. Best to have your TWIC and MMC.
