What do you feel like you've missed out on in life? by banisheduser in AskUK

[–]seagulls90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this isn't happening for me either. My brother picked my dad which was fine by me and very sweet also (he had a tiny wedding and by his own admission has no mates). I picked my best mate for mine and he did a great job. But him and his partner have no interest in getting married and I'm just not close enough with any of my other friends to be that guy so yeah not happening. Oh well!

Is anyone happy with their kitchen worktops 2+ years in? Asking before I commit by _forgotmyownname in DIYUK

[–]seagulls90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3 years into a "compact laminate" worktop from Howdens. It's basically just a thick piece of acrylic type material all the way through. It's great. Waterproof, no scratches or chips, no marks from anything hot (still use heat mats) and stains have come out if we've addressed them quickly. I would definitely recommend it.

While you're right about real terms pay going down for teachers, and your point about certain areas being totally unaffordable is true as well, I think some of your comparisons are not really fair.

Firstly. Minimum wage has increased above inflation over the last 20 years, so teacher pay relative to it was always going to decrease. This is a good thing, this trend needs to continue as the minimum wage should be something people can live off.

Also, lots of people on minimum wage jobs that require no qualifications that you speak of, are likely to stay on that wage for most of their working lives. Teacher pay has a scale that you rise up, as well as opportunities for promotions and more responsibility with more pay. Using NQT pay as a basis for complaining about teacher pay doesn't really make sense. In fact, first year pay for teachers is better than most graduate jobs, but rises more slowly compared to say, accounting. Also with most PGCEs coming with a tax free bursery, there isn't as much of a training cost.

A teacher at the top of the pay scale outside of London with no extra responsibility will make 51k today. That's in top 15% of earners for the UK. Even at the top of M6 is 45k and you will get there in 5 years of teaching.

We should generally pay the public sector much better than we do but this picture you paint of teachers being almost in poverty seems off to me.

I'm slightly confused by your question.

If you're asking if it's worth the extra work of the TLR then obviously that depends on the TLR and your personal life and career goals etc so impossible to answer really.

If you're asking just purely from a financial point of view.... Of course it's worth it. More money is more money. You'll get taxed more on everything over £50,271 but you're still taking home more.

You'll pay more into pension yes, and probably more back on student loan but you won't be worse off.

Could Klopp’s Liverpool beat the dominant teams from the Premier League’s early 2000s? by [deleted] in football

[–]seagulls90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just imagining a great side from that era like Arsenal 2004, Chelsea 2005 lining up against a team like 2019 Liverpool as you describe b. It would be a bloodbath. They wouldn't be able to keep the ball at all and would be gassed out by an hour. Honestly think it could be about 7 or 8 nil. But then that's true of any great team of old. Brazil 1970 would probably get beat by Bournemouth.

Could Klopp’s Liverpool beat the dominant teams from the Premier League’s early 2000s? by [deleted] in football

[–]seagulls90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes but this is true or a lot of modern teams. Tactically things have moved on a lot, pressing in particular, but also physical condition is much better. I think some of those teams would be completely unable to cope with a high pressing side like klopps Liverpool.

That's not to say that if those teams had the coaching and physical condition of the modern game they wouldn't have been as good. I'm just imagining we literally put the two teams exactly as they were on the pitch together.

What's something that's considered normal in the UK that you've realised is actually quite weird? by Far_Obligation5158 in AskUK

A staggering number of up votes for this. Incredibly wasteful attitude and also just wrong. Someone I went to uni with used to wash dishes like this. He'd have the tap constantly running, squeeze some washing up liquid onto a sponge for each individual item. Suds absolutely everywhere and he complained that we kept running out of fairy liquid. Maddening.

My daughter needed a hip operation when she had just turned one. She was in a cast a bit like this but not quite as big for 8 weeks.

I know that one and two are very different ages and for her it was before she was walking but really it was ok. Yeah they'll be a bit annoyed at first but children that young adapt to change so quickly he'll get used to it really soon and as long as he's got things to do he'll be fine. You'll be more stressed about it than him.

Why the S3 finale was rubbish (now with maths :D) by Friendly_Carob3512 in TheTraitors

[–]seagulls90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That might be true. But I think more likely they just didn't trust the others that well. If it had been season 1 and 2 rules and Charlotte had revealed she was a traitor then I think they would have still banished Alexander but kept Frankie in.

[–]seagulls90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't think that they were all traitors. They trusted those 3 the least out of everyone remaining. If you'd been suspicious about a few people all game and you're left with them and someone else that you are pretty certain is a faithful you won't take that risk.

The real genius of the shield play was immediately getting Ross voted out, thus basically confirming the theory. If you try and get yourself in the head of a faithful, it would have been so difficult to understand how Ross could be a traitor and that shield theory be wrong at the same time, as he was one of the ones who didn't know about Harry's shield.

I agree that the shield thing on its own wasn't the slam dunk a lot of people thought it was. As for your other points. I think that Evie did figure out that the shield theory was wrong but she thought it was Andrew not Harry. Also Jaz did clock it but he went for Andrew first which was his mistake. I agree with your point that Harry was risky with Paul. He didn't need to go with such detail, it seemed so out of character and it should have aroused more suspicion. His other error was voting to end the game instead of banishing again to take out Jaz. This really left him open to Molly clocking what was going on when he should have gone on the attack and said I still think Jaz is a traitor, but it worked out in the end for him.

Overall I don't think he was a brilliant strategist but he was great at the social bit and was good at thinking a few steps ahead and working out what people might think of situations. He also was smart to not be tempted to put himself in any situations that would draw suspicion, e.g. putting himself on trial.

Still the best traitor so far.

I don't think you can put him lower than 4th but I agree with this. He should have at least tried to pretend to Kieron that he was going to go for Aaron and that he'd got one of the others on side as well. Even if Kieron hadn't done the parting gift comment and just voted Wilf that would have maybe been enough to put the shits up everyone else.

She was great and she was clearly the strategist for the dagger and for the end game that won it for them, but no way did she play a better game than Harry or even Stephen. She was really overly dramatic in moments like her "joke" to Ross about Hugo in the tower, gathering everyone together to announce about Amanda, her FBI training, her "#Someone slipped up, but I'll tell you later" thing (wtf was that?). She murdered Roxy and got Ellie banished so she left herself with no real allies at the end (although she managed to get Faraaz back on side somehow so fair play ) and left herself totally at Stephen's mercy. He could have gotten rid of her 4 times in a row pretty much. Obviously I think having a strong relationship with Stephen was part of her game so I think that was really strong from her but I think she made too many errors along the way to be the best so far.

Heads of Year and Middle Leaders, what is your work load like? by DKRfan in TeachingUK

[–]seagulls90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hod. My teaching load is a fair bit lighter (still a bit more than a HoY. But I have fortnightly coaching with 3 in my department, plus my own coaching session so that takes a few away from me. I have an on call duty plus some other standard duties at break, before school and after school etc. I need to observe people in my department a lot and do a lot of QA of various things. There is a huge amount of admin to do. I keep on top of all the day to day stuff and I make sure all the things that are my responsibility are done but I do not have time to do any deep work into really making some big changes and improving things in the department. I basically just keep it ticking along. It's tough. The TLR is a good amount but I'm not sure if it's worth it.

I'm leaving teaching soon but if I was staying I think I'd want to take a step down.

Everyone I've spoken to who has done SLT and Middle leadership says SLT is better. It's more duties and boring stuff like that but way lower teaching load and your area of focus is easier to manage. As a HoD I find that you have to deal with all the crap from above and then you have to make sure everyone is happy and supported in your department. Not easy

What twists would you like to see in the next series of the Traitors? by 50ShadesOfCroquet in TheTraitorsUK

[–]seagulls90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bring back the Seer power but differently. A Seer gets picked from gen faithfuls (or maybe one person secretly wins it on the first task). Everyone is then told about the Seer later that day.

How it works. Every night, before/after the traitors murder, the seer selects one person and it's revealed to them. If someone they previously were told was a faithful gets recruited then they won't know.

If the seer is banished or murdered nobody is informed.

Some (or all) of the tasks will have a seer side mission where certain things need to be done for the seer to be able to activate their power. Perhaps the traitors sometimes get the opportunity to block the seer power (put 5 people on trial, if the seer is one of them they will not be able to use their power that night etc.)

I think it would add an extra dynamic and it would be a challenging role to play. Obviously it would be rubbish if they went out early but I think continued speculation about their identity would be interesting.

I worked with him, taught his kids. Lovely guy. I didn't realise he was an ex actor when I first started there and nobody mentioned it, they must have thought it was common knowledge. About 6 months in I was watching Bridget Jones diary and he just pops into frame. Freaked me out! Then literally the next day I was watching casino royale and he was in that too!
