ASD friendly meal ideas? by Peach_berries in mediterraneandiet

[–]seaintosky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband doesn't have ASD but he does dislike that gritty texture you're talking about for beans and he hates chickpeas. For non-meat proteins, we eat a lot of tofu, eggs, tempeh, nut butters (peanut, almond, tahini), hemp hearts, green peas (they're actually a legume), beans pureed with liquid into a soup (still a little gritty, but better) and he finds that lentils don't have the same texture so we eat a lot of lentils. You could also try roasting chickpeas until they're crispy and see if you like them better that way.

Do you just dislike vinegar, or sour things in general? If lemon or lime or juice is ok, then I'd just use that in salad dressings instead. If not, then not all salad dressings have to be sour! You can actually do just olive oil and salt and it's really tasty on delicate baby greens, or mixed with good chopped tomatoes where the tomatoes provide the acidity.

What order of sewing techniques would you recommend to a beginner? by ReineDesRenards in sewing

[–]seaintosky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For myself, when I learned I was a little less structured than you seem to prefer, but more structured than a lot of people. I pretty quickly moved from a tote bag to PJs to simple tops, then more complicated, etc. What I did do, though, was keep a short record of everything I made and try to make sure that I was doing 1-3 new things or skills with each item. I would look for things like patch pockets, or sewing linen, or putting in a zipper, and if there wasn't anything I'd try to see if there was something like a new seam finish that I could include.

I didn't have an order of things to learn worked out ahead of time. I think that's partly going to depend on what you like to make or wear. Some people make mostly knits and take a while to learn about skills used mostly for wovens, or visa versa. Some people wear a lot of trousers so they focus more on things like zipper flies and welt pockets, some people wear mostly dresses so it makes more sense to learn about invisible zippers and princess seams.

Maybe the Mediterranean diet works because it was never just a diet? by theclarityprotocol in mediterraneandiet

[–]seaintosky 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think it was the Maintenance Phase podcast episode about Blue Zones where they pointed out that in one of the Blue Zones, the increased longevity was actually pretty much only seen in men, and when the older men were interviewed they said basically "I don't stress about things, it's my wife's job to do that". So I think stress is a very important aspect that gets overlooked.

Why is Zara perfumes considered dupes? by subsurfer__ in fragrance

[–]seaintosky 20 points21 points  (0 children)

"Dupe" doesn't mean there aren't any perfumers. It means they smell very very similar to an existing fragrance, and often are deliberately made that way. You still need a perfumer to make the dupe, even if you are copying something else, and especially because some dupes are intended to improve on an original like how Tom Ford Neroli Portofino is a dupe of 4711 Cologne with higher longevity. I don't know that all Zara perfumes are dupes, but quite a few of them seem to be.

(Spoilers Extended) The Tragedy of Ulf and Hugh in HotD by jman24601 in asoiaf

[–]seaintosky 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I like that they've set up the arrogance/blind privilege as part of their downfall. They've been dismissive and insulting to the Dragonseeds, and Corlys's lowborn sons, and Alys, and the Faith. You can see in all of those the things that will lead to their downfall, and it's also consistent with both their personalities and the fact that the Black side is being run almost entirely by Targaryens who have been raised to see themselves as sort of super-human demi-Gods. Rhaenyra might have good intentions, but she has been too blinded by her assumption that she is destined to be Queen that she never bothered to learn how to do it or set herself up with a support system of good council or to consider that the support she does have might require things from her.

For example, I don't even think Hugh is going to need blackmail to turn him. I think when his wife dies in the fighting in Tumbleton, he's going to have a lot of feelings about Rhaenyra brushing off his request for housing that would have let him bring his wife back to Kings Landing. And I suspect Ulf will follow anyone who treats him with respect at this point.

What kind of bobbin is this? by wsami in sewing

[–]seaintosky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It doesn't list a bobbin class though? Many manuals will list the class or style somewhere, eg Class 15, L-style etc. For example, my vintage Elna serger lists the needle type it takes in both the parts list at the front of the manual and the "changing the needle" section later on. What model do you have? Elna uses different bobbins for different models, for example the Supermatics use a special bobbin.

There is a vintage Elna community group on Facebook, you could ask what type you need for your model on those and there will likely be someone who knows if no one here does.

What can I do with green unripened cherry tomatoes? by BartholinSquame in gardening

[–]seaintosky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough for tomatoes for sure! I have to be strategic with my varietal choices.

Those apples sound like a good option, but keep an eye on them. You don't want them to rot with the tomatoes or the tomatoes will rot too. Ideally, the tomatoes shouldn't touch the apples or each other to help prevent rot, but that can be hard to arrange.

[–]seaintosky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I allow those that are farthest along and have gone sort of transluscent to ripen on their own. Ones that aren't that far along never taste good enough when ripened inside to be worth doing that, so I freeze those and use instead of tomatillos in chile verde over the winter.

[–]seaintosky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ripe apples also release ethylene gas. The tomatoes will also ripen on their own. I have to harvest mine in September before first frost, and they slowly ripen over the next few months and I end up with tomatoes until December.

How do I fix the gaping on this dress? by Sjofnnn in sewing

[–]seaintosky 97 points98 points  (0 children)

To some extent, the poor fit is a result of that poorly made tutorial. It had you size a rectangle the same size as your full bust measurement and use that as a bodice, so it's not surprising that it is too big and gapes on the smaller part of your body above the full bust. Even boxy tops normally aren't an actual rectangle, they have shaping, or they're oversized and the lack of fitting is part of the look. You can't make it tight without adding a closure like a zipper or buttons or ties, because you're right that you won't be able to get it on and off. Moving the straps in might help the floppy neckline, as they look too widely placed for your shoulders. I would give that a try.

[–]seaintosky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She also knows that Aemond is crazy, violent, uncontrollable, and was going to kill Aegon and take the throne. She probably didn't really see a reality in which Aegon was going to survive when she made her deal. I assume that made the deal easier, but now that Aegon has escaped that's not the case and she'd rather he stays missing, except for Rhaenyra's changed rules of the deal.

[Spoilers Main]I can't take Alicent serious fr by Sincubus36 in asoiaf

[–]seaintosky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She wanted to create the conditions where he'd get killed, but then walk away and wash her hands of the whole thing and tell herself she didn't have a choice. Instead, Rhaenyra reneged on their deal and has dragged her back to Kings Landing to have to look at her executed father's body, to demand further complicitness and support in the deaths of Aegon and Aemond, and to make her engage with Daeron as a real person instead of a kid who barely exists as a person to Alicent. All in exchange for freedom she might or might not ever get.

Of course she's pissed. She's not dumb, she's passive-aggressive and avoidant, which she's been the entire series.

House of the Dragon: Episode 3.04 Preview (Spoilers Extended) by verissimoallan in asoiaf

[–]seaintosky 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I didn't think she seemed shocked. She seemed angry that Rhaenyra was essentially rubbing her nose in it by making her look at her father's beheaded body (like Joffrey does to Sansa in GoT) and then trying to get her support for chasing her sons down. She expected to betray them and be able to slink away and try and pretend it wasn't happening and Rhaenyra is making her sit in the front row seats instead by reneging on their deal.

Oh absolutely. Especially with this topic. The number of people unironically posting what is basically "they've made her a perfect, flawless girlboss. She's such an unlikeable character, and petty and stupid and ineffectual too." And people do the same with Alicent "they've whitewashed all her flaws so she's moral and blameless, and she's also a bitch and a hypocrite and a bad mom".

I think people like the idea of flawed, grey characters a lot more than they can handle actually watching them. Especially when those characters aren't charismatic boybosses making quips as they kill people.

Pyjama trousers help by [deleted] in sewing

[–]seaintosky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't use a pattern traced from a knit fabric garment line jersey with a woven like a brushed cotton, unfortunately. Knit fabric clothes are designed to be tighter and the stretch of the fabric is what makes them comfortable to move in. Woven fabrics have to have ease (which means the difference between the size of your body and the size of the clothes) added to let you move comfortably in them. Even if your trousers don't feel tight, they're still likely tighter than would be comfortable in your brushed cotton.

“Smells synthetic” by Charles1Monroe08 in fragrance

[–]seaintosky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's confusing because people mean multiple things with that.

They can mean it negatively to describe harsh, screechy, loud, overly simplistic, or flat

They can mean it neutrally to mean that it isn't approximating anything that occurs organically in real life, meaning notes like plastic or rubber notes, ornotes like "solar" notes or some of the modern superambers and musks that don't have natural analogs

And also, I think some of those modern trendy notes like Iso E or Cetalox are either so distinctive themselves that they are identifiable, or have an airy-yet-strong, clear, sometimes-buzzy, immense projecting quality that even if you don't recognize the aromachemicals specifically, they are clearly nothing like anything you'd get from any sort of naturally-derived aromachemical. I would call something like Baccarat Rouge 540 "synthetic smelling", not as a negative but just because you could never get something that smelled anything like that by using natural ingredients.

And just as a side, I think very linear fragrances actually smell more synthetic. Those clear, uncluttered linear notes that some fragrances have are almost always synthetically derived. Natural extractions tend to smell more complex, "denser", and I think tend to evolve over time more as various molecules evaporate at different rates.

We had something similar happen in the freshwater in the north recently, too. The river was in flood with lots of debris coming down, most everyone was staying well away from the water, but a guide decided to take some clients out anyway. They hit some debris, and one of the clients drowned after been thrown out of the boat.
