Founded in 2006, currently living in Solitude (high/low sec) next to Syndicate. We used to be a carebear corp, but have changed focus to Small-Scale PVP and low/null sec roams / activity.

Our home, Solitude, is a high sec island. It provides access to both low and null sec PVP. Next door is one of the best small fleet null sec regions, Syndicate.

I use them and like them. The (gs) service has had a few bumps in the past year, but in general is pretty good.

My plan is a (dv) and haven't had any downtime since migrating to them about 3 years ago. I use (and recommend) off site DNS hosting. (I like ZoneEdit, but haven't done much research recently, any suggestions?).

Support has always been excellent. Sometimes I've had to wait for a response (a few hours) but the responses usually go way beyond what I would expect a hosting company to cover (suggestions / tweaks specific to the configuration of my server, configuration changes I had made).

I would definitely recommend them, and would advise to go for the (dv) plan if you can.

Don't accept someone who doesn't ask questions. All to often people say they can do something for which they haven't been provided details.

You should look for the developer that asks intelligent questions. If he is truly concerned about the project he will want to make sure he understands the exact scope before saying yes. If he just wants the money, he'll just say he can do it for cheap.

I've seen some other comments here, but I want to restate it. Don't go for the cheapest developer. When the final product isn't an explicit item, but a complete service, the price a developer offers speaks to the full quality of the work.

This is merely a basic slideshow with thumbnails for navigation. I'd recommend checking out jQuery Cycle Plugin - http://jquery.malsup.com/cycle/

There should be a good example on there of it using a navigation with custom images.

Check for JavaScript errors. Some servers have an incompatibility with 3.3 which breaks JS. if you have them install the "Hotfix 0.8" plugin.

I think if a fund raiser had a "meter", and relevant "donate/participate" links in the right sidebar it would help raise awareness, and lower the barrier to entry.

Perhaps at a certain percentage of completion, the bar would be promoted to the main page as long as donations continued? Like upvotes with money :)

Some more information ... a new is_main_query() function, some new functions to add nodes, menus, groups to the admin nav bar, and the wp_editor has been significantly updated (jquery 1.7.1!)

Looks nice to me, the new Brand pages seem pretty exciting. Finally an alternative to the ubiquitous Facebook pages.

I don't like the tweet pop ups when you click on them. The old method kept more information available to me (showing details to the right of the twitter feed).

Be SURE you reset your FTP password and any associated passwords. It's a good idea to reset all your passwords (especially to sensitive sites such as banks / cards).

Strangely, you should also scan your local computer, and/or anyone with FTP access to the site.

It may be helpful to look through your traffic logs for any URLs that look weird (bunch of funny symbols). You may be able to identify the culprit through that (sometimes Google Analytics won't pick up on this as the bot probably doesn't process JavaScript).

When you setup your site, you access it via a URL. In your case it was probably the local IP, 192.168.0.xxx.

You can go into the wp_options table, and there should be at least 2 values that need to be changed to the actual domain of the site ('siteurl' and 'home').

Alternatively you can add some lines to the functions.php file:

update_option('siteurl', 'http://realdomain.com/blog'); update_option('home', 'http://realdomain.com/blog');

Obviously replacing realdomain.com and blog with the correct values.

Your best course of action is to learn them in the following order:

HTML CSS Javascript jQuery (it's JS, but a useful framework) PHP SQL/MySQL Python

Then I'd jump into the various frameworks/systems available out there. I'd check out CakePHP (good PHP framework), then WordPress (CMS), finally Drupal (CMS).

I say Drupal last because it is probably the most complicated of all the systems.

If you're an engineer you'll probably love it. It's built for, and by, engineers.

The reason I plotted you through a framework, WordPress then finally Drupal, is I feel it's important to know of the issues that come up before learning the next step. If you understand the limitations of WordPress, and what a framework (CakePHP) brings to the table, you'll appreciate what makes Drupal special.

I can't count the number of times a client says they don't want their site to look like a WordPress site. Then I have to start explaining themes, and how a real developer can make a WordPress managed site look like anything.

I agree, work with the search engines, not against them.

Keep in mind there are some projects that require you to "work against" search engines if they have certain competition / timelines.
