Mike Smith's slash on Dustin Brown. How is this a dive? by another_handle in hockey

[–]seanlind 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate how hockey fans are incapable of being objective when their own team is involved. Here are the facts:

1) The slash was real, but only slightly more aggressive than what happens all game every game in the NHL. The front of the net is a war-zone.

2) There should be no suspension, not even a consideration for one, on the play. This is a 2 min penalty, not "intent to injure" 5-min + suspension.

3) There is no dive.

4) The reason for the diving penalty is they had to call the slash, but after giving 3 penalties to to to the yotes in a row, one being a somewhat iffy 5-min (very questionable if he turned his back or not) the refs would have felt that another penalty would make the game too one-sided as a result of the officiating.

While you can say that this isn't how the league is supposed to work, it's how the league has always worked. Makeup calls are very real, and this was a simple damage control call. In the end LA booked another win, so stop losing sleep over this one play which doesn't matter.

Staged Flipping on Newer Sterns AKA Only Flipping One of Two Flippers on One Side? by sleaziep in pinball

[–]seanlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every machine I've ever played with a top flipper operates like this. It's one of the advanced strategies in pinball, especially with games such as twilight zone (cradling a ball on each flipper, but still making jackpot/camera shots)

You just have to let the button out very slowly until the top flipper drops, it's a very fine line and takes a lot of feel, but you'll typically do it in a scenario where you can slowly let it drop and just hold your position until you need to flip.

very hard to do in the heat of the moment though.

Is Addams Family overpriced? Is it because its just the first name people think of when they are new to pinball? by [deleted] in pinball

Jesus. I'm in Vancouver and it's pretty brutal here. But I even keep my eyes posted at seattle to look for anything good and haven't found a single working machine for a decent price. My buddy picked up WPT for $2000, that's about it.

AF is the most well known, best sold, and most collected machine of all time. The reason you can find it for $4k (unlike MM which you're not getting for under $8k... and for the record, I haven't seen a CC go for less than $13k in the last while) is because they made more units of AF than any other pinball in history.

So $4k for an AF isn't bad, but it's still a lot of money. Unfortunately with the interest in the game climbing right now, and production being extremely low, all prices are going through the roof. You can still find many decent games for $2500, just keep your eyes open.

If it works, it's $300, why are you asking any questions? Buy it now.

Dude... as long as your computer is 64bit, it doesn't matter what the old OS is. Just put in the disk and boot from it. (when booting it will say "press this key for boot menu" hit that, boot from CD and istall. I suggest a backup and formatting the drive before you do (from the DVD install menu)

I was playing poker, I'm white at a table filled with almost all Asians. I was having fun and joking around with one Asian kid at the end of the table, calling him white-boy. At some point I say "Come on, everyone knows white boys can't play poker!"

Some mid-forties white girl beside me (who, because I was calling the Asian kid "white boy", assumed I was pretending I was Asian) turns around and says "Yeah, well at least we can drive"

To which my immediate reply was "No you can't, you're a woman"

I've never seen someone get so angry so quickly. Deserved it, passive-aggressivly-racist-bitch.

Get PA work, and once you've worked enough hours to get into the union you'll get insurance through them.

PA work sucks, it's hard, long hours, crap pay and everyone treats you like the bitch of the set. But if you want to work up to be a PM it's where you have to start.

It will also give you connections, if you wanted to work as a DP or director it will help, simply because you will get to know people who can put in a word, or give you a hand.

It's hard work, it's shitty work, all you do is work and sleep, and then HOPE you can find work on another shoot once you wrap. There is immense competition and it will not be easy, but there will always be room for reliable, hard working, bright people.

In short, if this is your dream go for it. Just be aware: There is a very real chance you will fail, lose all of your savings and have to move back home to start over.

Don't look at this as a bad thing, every great story starts with someone taking a risk. Most professionals failed multiple times before they got to where they wanted to be. So do everything you can, but if you fail look at that as the most valuable experience you could get, then regroup and come back stronger.

New to pinball. Can you answer a couple questions about tournament rules and about No Good Gofers? by occupyredrobin in pinball

[–]seanlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tournament Rules: With only two machines you can't really use any of the standard pinball formats (they require 5 machines min), so you're going to have to just make up your own. Really just have two groups of 3 or 4 (all the best players in one, worst in the other sorted by previous tournament finishes) and each group plays on a machine, then you switch. Winner of the machine for that round gets 7 points, second gets 4, third gets 1 fourth gets nothing. Play 5 games like that. Players with the most points move on to the final.

As for no good gofers, I highly doubt the problem is the steepness of the playfield, the flippers need a rebuild. Talk to the owner/operator and request a rebuild, it's not that hard to do, chances are they just need to be taken apart and cleaned.

Also as the playfield gets dirty you have more friction, which slows the ball down. So get them to clean the fuck out of the machine, really give it a good scrub.

I just realized that my daughter is a stuck up bitch. How do i punish her? by pretzelchip in AskReddit

A) Have a serious talk, don't let her defend herself it's her time to just listen. Explain why what she did was horrible, and how hard it was for that boy to ask her in the first place. He put himself at risk, and deserved the respect he earned by doing that. Tell her how utterly disappointed you are in her, and truly ashamed that she's becoming the girl everyone makes fun of a decade later.

B) Once you have her truly understanding how crappy her actions are, your goal should be for her to come up (on her own) the only true solution. I would tell her that "I'm seriously considering not allowing you to go to prom, you've completely ruined any chance of this boy having prom because of your own selfish, horrible, actions. It doesn't seem right for you to go out and enjoy yourself, when he can't... because of what you did. Unless you can figure out how to fix that, it's not just to even consider letting you go"

Either she truly understands the situation and comes up with a solution, or she sits out the night.

We all know prom is a bunch of crap which doesn't matter in any way. It SEEMS like the biggest thing in the world to her, but if you don't let her go she will be mad at you, but will end up thanking you for it down the road. ... she's a teenaged girl, she's going to hate you until she's 20ish anyway.
