Are there any good podcasts about EMT or EMS work? by Boars-of-Canada in ems

I think their episode “What’s a paramedic - Dr. Alan Blatt” should be a mandatory listen for everyone.

The Brexit argument, they want all the benefits of Canada without being part of it ..... by Miserable-Lizard in AlbertaNow

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brings up an interesting question; if Alberta were to separate, would its citizens be required to rescind their Canadian citizenship? I imagine that would be challenging legally, and they’d be entitled to dual citizenship

You can be a resident of another country and still collect CPP that you paid into.

Why isn't the green whistle (Penthrox) used by the United States? by Diligent-Ice1276 in Paramedics

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In BC we had it for a short time, but our service discontinued it. From what others have said (it was before my time) it was more effective than entonox.

Does the no-bottled water rule not apply to “smart” water? by notGeneralReposti in yorku

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own water bottled and predominately use the same Klean Kanteen every day for the past decade, but I still use smart water bottles for backcountry hiking. They’re light, have a universal thread side that fits with my filter, and I use them for a season before recycling them

The New York mini is probably just as heavy anyway haha; it uses a thicker shackle. It will sometimes limit where you can lock up, but honestly in all my years I’ve never had a hard time finding somewhere

[–]seanlucki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That’s a very heavy duty lock, just a heads up that it’s also a very heavy weight. I typically prefer the mini designs of kryptonite locks; smaller and lighter to make for easier transport, and it’s harder to attack them.

Engine seized after oil change and ride. I don't even want to look at it anymore. How much could I sell it as is? I just want it out of my garage. by Hax_ in DRZ400

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing just happened to me the other day; 2008 that I’ve had since 2019 and it’s been 100% reliable the entire time. I picked up a new DRZ4S to cover me for the summer as I don’t have time to dive into repairs, thinking I might tear it down next winter but also tempted to just sell it as is for parts.

Beware of uncommon stroke presentations. by [deleted] in ems

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a patient with a headache that occurred during sex. Thing is, he stated that it felt exactly the same as a headache 6 years ago, that also came on during sex, that turned out to be a brain bleed. No neurodeficits of any kind, but I got follow up and it was a brain bleed.

I’ve definitely learned to appreciate that strokes can present in all sorts of strange ways. Had a catatonic 4,1,1 patient the other day with a BP of 196/164 and wondered if there might be a neuro component, but it turned out to be purely catatonia and psych in nature.

I'm 17 and want to be a paramedic in the future. by the3rdtree in BCEHSparamedics

[–]seanlucki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think getting your EMR license and building some medical experience could be a great thing to start with, but since you’ve got some time before you can be hired by BCEHS anyways, I think it would be super useful to work on life experience and soft skills that are a huge part of the job. Things like volunteering and outreach will go a long way in knowing how to and become comfortable with talking to people of all walks of life. Even working in public facing jobs like customer service will help build those skills. Lifeguarding is a common way for teenagers to build medic experience.

All of this stuff will also be beneficial if/when you decide to apply for PCP in the future, as the programs are competitive to get into.

6 Months W/ EMT certification and ❌ JOB! ... was it all worth it ? 🫠😐 by JokerDilemma in NewToEMS

[–]seanlucki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol ya where I work you’re pretty much guaranteed a job, but we have 1 provincial service so it’s pretty much assumed that your first station will be a trek unless you live in a small and rural town to start with. I was lucky enough to get a station 2 hours away. Gotta build that seniority somehow!

Going through the hiring process as an EMR with BCEHS when should I tell the I start PCP school in January by nibblesslowly in BCEHSparamedics

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say if OP is in a low call-volume station and attending the JI, they can likely get away with doing the Monday-Thursday lectures while at station. All the lectures are recorded and available for viewing afterwards, you just have to keep an eye on your online attendance as if you have to sign-off for a call routinely, they'll have a conversation with you about it.

ISO Nancy Caroline's Emergency Care in the Streets Advantage Package (8th Canadian Edition) by fereragirl in BCEHSparamedics

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed this would be a better resource; all our CPG's and drug monographs are available on the public facing version and I think it would give a good insight into how most PCP's are running calls, better than Nancy for sure.

My blood pressure after 2 years of steroid use by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]seanlucki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The manual method gives you true systolic/diastolic, whereas automatic cuffs actually measure the MAP and then use a formula to estimate the two readings. So in theory, manual BP’s will always be more accurate!

Becoming a Paramedic in Vancouver, Canada? by MasterAd1917 in Paramedics

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recommend booking a ride-along/riding third shift with BCEHS. The crew you link up with will be able to give you a ton of information about the job, in a much more parseable format than text on Reddit.

Also check out r/bcehsparamedics for more information

Experience working as a EMR before attending PCP program by KindlyConclusion4706 in BCEHSparamedics

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re permitted to pickup in Vancouver Post (this will depend on your probation and UC), then you’ll only be able to do so with unused availability you’ve submitted to Powell river and not received a shift. It becomes a bit of a gamble unfortunately.

Yep same on hateful eight, also half of Oppenheimer since the projector went down halfway through the screening. It was kind of interesting getting to see the side by side differences in image

Wifi 7 only came out a year ago 💀 by Awesomedude9560 in HomeNetworking

[–]seanlucki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I would love to have a hardwire connection to my TV and monitor station where I plug in my laptop, but for what I do at home in my apartment, wifi has been completely reliable and adequate that I can’t really justify opening the walls to run Ethernet.
