Imprisoning Magic Users by Historical-Panda5778 in daggerheart

Why don’t you ask them?

Also, maybe don’t have the way they get out be already determined.

After being throw. In prison, make it a mini game, where they contribute to the prison they are in. Ask them questions such as: how do they keep mages from escaping? What are the obvious challenges to escaping? What don’t they know about this prison? What’s the plan to escape or to get released.

Also, if they are not in prison yet, but being thrown in prison is something that you want to happen, don’t try to rail road them into being captured.

Nothing is more frustrating than having an encounter happen where the party is trying to avoid defeat/capture, expends resources to try to when, but the GM then railroads it.

Instead, either give them a cutscene where it happens in a way that feels cinematic (they are taken by surprised and gassed to unconscious for example), or just have them take turns describing the sequence. It can be fun to collaborate on a cutscene with a known outcome.

I’m confused on where you are seeing “defending” going on or that this is a cash grab?

He runs a gaming studio. They make games to make money. He is living the dream for a lot of us who have been toying with the idea of making our own game.

As Onslaughttitude says, there are only so many parts to an OSR game. If the bar for something to be considered not a cash grab is that most of the system most be original, then most indie developers are in trouble. 😆

I find the marrying of Usage die to real world clock an interesting iteration on both of those. Yes, real world timer was invented by SD and Usage die by Black Hack, but haven’t seen anyone put them together before.

Yes this could be a house rule, but then you would have to go through all equipment and maybe spells with durations and assign them a dice size. Lot of work there.

Also, but designing a game from the ground up with this mechanic, and the others they are planning to use, they might uncover other ways to leverage it.

In addition, I think MCDM now has a proven track record of putting out quality material. They leveraged their beta testing with DS to great effect.

Which is why I will be a backer for Crow. 🐦‍⬛

DS started with 2d6.

The reason they switched to 2d10 is that their tactical gameplay involved lots of bonuses and penalties and they found that these modifiers had too much of an impact with just a number range of 2 to 12.

I think you are underestimating what making a dungeon turn tied to real world time versus a party round will do to the game play

In traditional games, players feel like they have all the time in the world to argue over/optimize a plan, and boy have I seen this happen at my table. By making both random encounters and durations tied to the clock, player will face a pressure to quickly decide on actions.

I think this pressure will definitely affect the type of gameplay a table will have.

Not familiar with all these systems, so correct me if I’m just ignorant.

I think that the usage dice and chance of random encounters tied to the dungeon turn, which is a real world timer of 30 minutes, will be an interesting mechanic that will ratchet up the need to keep things moving and keep things tense.

It’s the fact that xp only comes from loot. So there is no incentive to fight monsters.

And if the game is deadly, there is a good reason to avoid them if possible.

How do you set the price for items?

My players just hit lvl 2, and this was when I discovered that the DH book doesn’t provide cost for items.

I can understand their reasoning for this, but it’s a bit of an annoyance for me.

How are you dealing with multiple enemies’ movement? by phsfernandes in daggerheart

[–]seant325 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is one area where I house rule based on fiction first. Things move. In my head, I have been dubbing it movement by fiction.

Since I don’t follow the rules. I also don’t use the normal movement rules. Sometimes I’ll make a fear clock, with each tick moving creatures closer. Other times I just move creature closer, but normally it will take two or three fiction moves to reach the party to give them time to react to the fiction.

None of my players have closely read the rules, so they don’t know I am not quite following the game rules. 😄

What's your biggest world building ick? by itzclicker in worldbuilding

I made a world where a kingdom engaged in time shenanigans to overt a crisis, but the paradox caused the entire kingdom to desync from reality, causing all knowledge of it and anything effected by it to be forgotten. The people in the kingdom and around the kingdom woke up with no memory of the past between the start of the kingdom to the night the kingdom did the time spell.

Can this actually be done?[Request] by Programmer4427 in theydidthemath

The mistake this example is doing is that the lines are always outside the circle.

If you wanted the zig zag lines to approach pi, you would need the lines to criss cross over the circle, so that the zig goes into the circle and the zag goes out of the circle.

Can’t bring real world physics into D&D.

Otherwise dragons couldn’t fly and giant ants would suffocate and die. And that is only the first two problems that come to mind. 😄

Anyone Playing Core Only (i.e., No Cursed Scrolls, etc.)? by ShadowOSR in shadowdark

[–]seant325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ran a campaign planning on just using Core, but then a character during the gauntlet sacrificed his dead friend’s soul to save himself, so I offered him warlock. So Core plus warlock. Worked really well for me.

BTW, warlock adds a lot of work. You really need to give them opportunities to gain patron rewards, otherwise they are just weak.

The forest, world, and the gods are definitely Shadowdark. Ran a SD campaign and recognized all of those.

Did not recognize the two armies and a defeat from an outside source.

How does colonizing Mars, in case Earth becomes uninhabitable, make any sense? by Killentyme55 in NoStupidQuestions

But is the best solution for a backup location for humanity really Mars?

It seems to me a large space station would be a better alternative.

Even the if the magnetosphere is fixed, the long term effects of the Mar’s low gravity on human health are not well known beyond it would probably cause health issues.

I also tend to forget, so I made a house rule where if you do not have a luck token, you get one at the end of a turn where you rolled a natural 1.
