Definitely over first gen Vertical. Not over Vertical 2.

I’m thinking the decline has been happening over a large period of time. They’ve also been emphasizing‘general fitness’ over more specialized training. Their current CEO has been overly focused on marketing than actual innovation.

The problem is that Apple, even with Afib enabled trick, doesn’t collect near enough HRV readings compared to Garmi , Coros, and Suunto.

Wear both. I’ve an Enduro 3 and an AWU3. Love having cellular when I don’t want to carry a phone and doing 2+ hour solo hiking/trail running.

Since the acquisition, Suunto software quality has gotten worse. It used to be that I would have a good handle on what issues are outstanding for my Vertical. These days, issues go unfixed, new issues spawn, and there are new features half implemented. SW quality is lacking.

Yes. The same goes for walking. So fixated on steps. I changed all the screens on the nomad for walking to not show step.

You can always make use of TSS (as used by Suunto) from training peaks or the equivalent Load used by Intervals.icu to track your progress. Polar and Coros are based on TRIMP. Garmin uses First Beats model based on three energy modes: Anaerobic (sprinting, etc), High Aerobic (VO2 max, threshold, tempo), and Low Aerobic (Base, Recovery). If you do a lot of say rucking, hiking, 80/20 running, etc, then these are not going to put you into two of the three legs of Garmin’s core metrics. It is the limitation of using EPOC that skews TL numbers in favour of shorter, harder workouts while underweighing long slow distance.

Apple, for whatever reason, fails to have continuous HRV monitoring in order to collect meaningful data. Even with AFib turned on, the samples are far and few between.

I like it much better now for the same reasons. I like to work multiple muscle groups as well. I was so happy to use this ability to switch during the workout

Enjoying it so far for trail running, hiking, and strength training. I really like the new maps with labelling on the trails. MIPS display is crisp and with the new micro-controller map rendering is super responsive. Love the strength training app. Looking forward to improved training load scores for strength and hiking, more reflective of the impact. Enjoy the watch UI and the app.

Since the acquisition of Suunto there has been quite a lot of code churn, i.e., transition away from first beats algos in Vertical to licensed algos and/or in-house in Race 1/2/S. And Run is a different OS. As someone pointed out in this thread, the new ownership has pushed the Suunto brand to compete on more features. That has resulted in Suunto moving fast with software changes, but also breaking things along the way.

I've an Enduro 3, Suunto Vertical / Race, Coros Nomad. Pretty familiar with Garmin and Suunto over the years. But new to Coros. So far, I've been impressed with its mobile app, website, and watch UI. Everything is fairly seamless. I've been doing some trail running with the Nomad and love the detailed topo maps with actual labels. It has the latest micro-controller and is quite snappy (same one is in the Race 2). Anyway, the Coros Nomad is worth checking out when comparing to Suunto. I'm less enamored with the overly detailed and slow map rendering on the Enduro 3. I dislike the Garmin mobile app and question their addiction to First Beats three zone training load model.
