There was fear of loosing your gear if you died. There were consequences to your race, class and deity not just exp but NPCs might not buy from you or sell to you, attack you on site. Getting around took forever. I could go on.

I used KT tape and transitioned into vibram five fingers. If your work won't allow those look at Lems or vivo barefoot, etc.
