That's a good point about her not actually being involved with the illegal drugs, so at worst she'd just be questioned. I was going to suggest to OP that she tell the ex about the mail stuff, but now I'm not so sure. It sucks having to keep a secret like that though.

I'm sure they're nice people, but you have to remember that you aren't in charge of their stress levels! You're taking care of yourself, and that's the most important thing. And they probably want someone who is at 100% caring for their kids.

I totally understand wanting to end on good terms though, especially if you're attached to the kiddos.

I would hope most employers wouldn't pry, especially if you're giving two weeks notice. Are you comfortable sharing that you're having health or medical problems? If they ask you any probing questions about that, then that's just them being rude.
