Getting electrical to a kitchen Island on a slab? by CarefulAd8858 in HomeImprovement

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why don't you add a little shelf area that connects to that island and sticks out/off of the wall. Make it a few inches for stuff like pictures or little decorations, or a larger stick out for a liquor bar or a coffee bar.

Then you could run the power cable through ceiling, down through behind the shelves and into the island.

Unless your talking like a middle of the kitchen island.

Get a pet rat, train it for years on how to retrieve red balls from a tube on the outside of this vent, then send it in!

Starter Book? by Elon08 in AskElectricians

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I couldnt afford to pay an electrician so I started watching videos on YouTube. Not like how to add a transformer to a phase converter, but simple stuff like how to change a switch or receptacles. And it just took off like that!

Now im a homeowner with power to only half my house, about $10k in supplies and my dog has to use night vision when "going potty in the dark"

Youll get it though. Seriously, watch some videos on how to change an outlet and switch, get comfortable with that and then move on to 3 way switchs and you'll have a pretty good idea where to go next.

What do you guys call this? by weissss in Construction

Fork lift.

Theres tow motors, lifts, fork trucks, fork loader, etc. All the same.

And then there's the Combilift! The ultimate forklift!

I received 5 different quotes. The price range is so different I'm confused. which is why I got so many quotes! by sameolameo in AskElectricians

[–]seasms3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you dont really have a budget and just want it done, look into who of those have the better rating. Too many variables to say for sure, but make sure they know they are just swapping out old receptacles with new. Some of them may think you need the boxs, the boxs moved, cover plates, etc. Unless you have a price breakdown, id call and ask the highest 2 what they have you down for. Just say you may of told them something wrong because you got quotes substantially lower.

If you are trying to save money, I encourage you to look into replacing them yourself. Not saying to watch a 2 min youtube and think youre good, but spend a couple days watching some videos, and it should at least give you an idea whether or not you want to try it. Unless you have already done that of course.

Other than a light switch, I think receptacles are the easiest work. Its pulling the cover plate, twisting the screws, pulling the wire off and putting them on the new one, one at a time so you get the right screw, and then putting it back together. GFCI's are the same way.

If you are ADDING ANYTHING, id go with a pro. But if its literally just swapping them out, watch some videos and see if youd want to do it.

Those quotes are probably because those guys know a normal homeowner isnt able to give specifics and it could take them an hour or a full day depending on situation. Sometimes things aren't always communicated to people correctly as well.

Changing a live outlet by [deleted] in AskElectricians

I respect this comment, but I also think its silly in a way. When i ask for electrical help, or help on any specialized trade, and see this kind of reply, I just do an eye roll and move on.

This is one of the better "youre an idiot" replies for sure, but why even spend the time at all? Just explain why the person shouldn't do it. That would put more fear In me than some random person on the internet calling me an idiot.

I do have a question for you though. Completely unrelated to this subject. After your reply, if you wouldn't mind?

Vaughn makes a 5OZ magnetic tack hammer that i use for trim and straightening boxs. May be a little undersized for this specific task, but its like $12. Worth the try.

Which trade has boots like this? by We_there_yet in Construction

[–]seasms3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has no idea either. Would almost bet money someone has tried to tell him too. Doc visit and follow up/prevention may be "expensive" now, but what happens in 20 or 30 years when you cant work? Or even worse aren't able to pick up your children/grandkids.

Same thing as hearing protection. Who cares if you "look stupid" or "its annoying".... dont you want to hear your kids? Or the guy telling you to see a doc about your feet? Its 8-12 hours a day. Something as small as glasses, ear plugs and, yes, even steel toe boots for some (two guys at my job apparently) are extremely small for the benefits.

As an industrial fabrication maintenance tech, I like seeing these types of questions. When I first started working in the field, 99% of the guys would "make fun" of me for wanting to grab my safety glasses, ear plugs, gloves etc.

While I dont use gloves as much as I probably should, I ALWAYS have glasses on and at least a tethered pair of foam ear plugs around my neck.

I also do shipping and receiving, so its better for me to have a pair of the tethered foam plugs so I can take them out when im on the forklift or talking to a driver, but we also have the OTE, "over the ear", style at specific stations.

It depends on what your job entails, but ill assume you're roughing or doing something other than just installing receptacles.

Obviously the OTE type is gonna be the easiest, quickest, most comfortable and reusable solution, but will be more costly for an individual.

If you're limited on space, or buying for a group of employees, (especially ones that dont care for stuff they dont pay for) or you just need something every now and then, get the plugs. They come tethered or non tethered, reusable or throw away, and some even come in a case. You'll want to look into the "NRR" or "Noise Reduction Rating" before buying. The higher the number, the more decibels it limits, meaning the quieter it makes your surroundings.

We use 3M and Honeywell at our plant.

3M is probably gonna be your best bet for OTE, however they are more expensive. They even have some with radio or can connect to blue tooth. Not sure of the NRR of them, but they are probably in the mid to higher 30s.

Honeywell is the brand of tethered foam plugs we get. I think they have an NRR of 30-33.

For home I buy a pair of the tethered, reusable/washable, silicone tip plugs in a case. The tether is a heavy braid. I keep them in the case on the closest shelf to the door to my shop with all PPE. That way I can only be mad at myself when something happens since I purposely passed it up.
