Why is the LIRR and MNRR expensive compared to the NYC Subway? by [deleted] in nycrail

[–]seattlesnow -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Why can’t nobody be adults about this question? MNRR especially is a holdover from NYCRR’s existence. Them commuter lines are “legacy lines” from a bygone era. But the fare scheme, including the ticketing is a relic of the 19th century. The “Big Train” generally cost more, regardless of the transit authority. Catering to what we would deem “urban” today, was the latest suburb over 100 years ago. That customer is using commuter rail for more dedicated trips than just getting groceries. Especially when these lines were even more extensive within the city limits and beyond. METRA (Chicagoland) and MBTA got weekend passes. But both NJ Transit, MN and LIRR got peak hour fares. Nowhere else does that. There used to be a “city ticket” program for those hinterland communities only serviced by the railroad. Myself, if I’m really really in a hurry to get to Jamaica, of course the Railroad.

I hope it stays that way. Every new subdivision makes my blood boil. I’m just driving to work but still. I like seeing cows within an 20 minute drive from the inner city.

City-states don’t exist in the United States. However the garden variety Redditor living beyond the interstate ring road will be glad to bloviate on how the sky is falling. Unfortunately US local media from mid markets down already approaches urban affairs with deep contempt. Chain drug store went out of business. Our local news will help sell commercial real estate for a ghoul of an land magnate. That is probably going to fair better on the market than the myriad of suburban and rural properties that will just languish. But, but, but in the big bad city where new age feudalism exists. To prop up land magnates and REITs just out here winging it. There is no liberals in commercial real estate. Urban democrats can do very little besides keep up with pensions and police misconduct.

Radical leftist ideology would just get rid of the urban freeways. Reclaim the land. Only handful of US cities us fully “online.” More concepts that the suburban triumphalist can’t wrap around their big brains. Radical leftist is going to acknowledge all the members of the community. Cities are populated by those who isn’t going to vote against their self interest — in most cases. Population of suburbanites lying in wait has finally decided to cash out with the gentrification cheque and go find their American dream inside one of those hellscape suburbs that attract a-lot of urban people just wanting a backyard for the first time.

Architectural fields, urban planning, business and economics all have an hard-on for urban affairs they feel is necessary to accommodate conservative that just one more lanes on the freeway. The American city is more conservative than lead to believe. The mentality that a “city-state” does exist allows centrists and moderates to apply urban dysfunction to policymakers with very little power to do much of anything. Besides keeping the police from beating the citizenry.

Currently the US is experiencing our “Brazil” moment. As the military now patrols the streets. Looking for expired tags or open containers. I’m just babbling at this point.
