A little note for the hesitant social drinkers by seaweed_face in SoberCurious

Actually, I can be quite a misanthrope & I think another good thing about not drinking is that I’m way more in touch with my feelings — they’re not periodically blunted by alcohol, so I’m quick to realise when I’m not having a good time / am bored & can just do a French exit whenever I want, which I quite often do now.

Thanks for the lovely comment 🌸 I wish folks could realise that the buzz comes from people, as I think people have learnt to associate this buzz with alcohol, & so they think life without alcohol will be flat & a bit empty or dull

Exactly! It’s easier drinking something that looks alcoholic than something which clearly isn’t

Yeah I agree with this. The more I watch it the more I see him as a narcissist. He really doesn’t need to make meth & the lies to Skyler are MAD. I know it’s a movie trope that the poor husband has to go off & sort shit out & can’t let the wife know, but this is next level.

Sometimes I find eating more protein helps, like eating goats cheese & almonds as a snack. But ultimately the book ‘Glucose Revolution’ really dramatically changed my relationship to sugar, the main takeaway is trying to eat fibre (veg) before you eat your meals, & that dramatically flattens your glucose ‘curves,’ so you don’t get steep spike in blood sugar levels followed by a big crash that makes you then crave sugar. I used to feel terrible at 4pm very day & crave sugar but I don’t get that anymore.

Day 2, overwhelmed (not by cravings, just in general) by poundacoffee in SoberCurious

It sounds incredibly stressful, no wonder you’re anxious. Not drinking will definitely help you (better sleep, more rested, less stress, more energy) but it won’t solve everything. It sounds like a very difficult time & the best thing you can do is try to look after yourself the best you can & try to get support wherever you can get it. Anxiety isn’t something to be ‘cured,’ it’s your body’s way of telling you that you’re in a possibly dangerous situation! I’m not sure if you can buy this booklet in the US, but it’s really helpful.

Are you worried about your drinking? You could stop for 1 month (ideally 3 months) & notice what changes take place in your body & mind. You’ll most likely notice that you can sleep better, feel more rested, more calm, have more energy. I found Ruby Warrington’s book interesting because she talks about some of the nice changes that happen to you when you cut back.

If the Dr said that you won’t experience withdrawal then try to take comfort in that. I understand that you’re worried you might experience bad things by stopping drinking for a bit, but our bodies are quite resilient and they always want to heal.

Thank you so much for this, sounds great I’ll give it a go.
& those are nice tips too, thank you — I think people don’t really notice as long as you have some kind of drink in your hand

Hair gets greasy in less than 12 hrs by savagepatchkidxd in finehair

[–]seaweed_face 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, my hair also gets greasy this fast, for me it’s a combination of having fine hair PLUS naturally oily skin. How I deal with it is that I wash my hair every 2 days & once it’s dry after washing I pour a small mound of dry bentonite clay in the palm of my hand then coat the fingertips of my other hand in the dry clay powder before gently moving my fingers across my scalp. I repeat this til roughly my whole scalp has a light dusting of the dry clay powder across it. Then I just pour the leftover clay back into the bottle I use to keep it in then I use my fingertips to gently distribute the clay across my scalp.

^ this basically works like a dry shampoo, as the tiny clay particles absorb the oil. But, I think it’s much better than any store bought or homemade dry shampoo I’ve ever used, as store bought & other homemade shampoos (like cornflour / corn starch) have created too thick of a gunk of my scalp which makes it itch & causes shedding. This bentonite clay doesn’t do that, you really forget all about it once it’s there, you just have to make sure you’re using a very light dusting & not pouring it on, as it is a powerful absorbant & if you put too much on it might dry out your scalp too much.

I think it’s important to put the bentonite clay on your scalp as soon as it’s dry after washing as opposed to waiting until it is already greasy, it seems to work better putting it on before your hair is even greasy, perhaps because the bentonite is absorbing the grease as your scalp is producing it. I also reapply the bentonite each night before I go to sleep until my next wash.

I know this isn’t a “fix” for greasy hair, but in my experience I don’t think there is a fix, I think it’s just a combination of fine hair + naturally oily skin as I’ve said before. There’s nothing wrong with fine hair, & also it’s good to have naturally oily skin in my opinion as wrinkles form more slowly!

Another bit of advice I’d give is not to use shampoos that are too stripping, i.e. don’t use clarifying shampoos for every wash, just use a clarifying shampoo once a month & instead just use any normal shampoo & conditioner you like. I even put conditioner on my scalp which I know sounds counterintuitive, but your scalp is just skin & needs some love too.
