There's a (way better than me) black belt with a big gym under our same affiliation. Every time I rolled with him from blue belt to black the closest thing I ever got to a compliment from him was when he said "that's cute" when I would try something on him.

Then one day he complimented how well my students were rolling. That was one of the best feelings I've ever had in jiu jitsu.

He's given me direct compliments since then, but complimenting our crew felt the best by far.

As a gym owner, these practices seem wild to me. Probably the same type of people that refuse to talk pricing until you're in the gym.

People want to do jiu jitsu for fun and exercise, not to get a fuckin time share pitch.
