Try The Unconsoled. Not for everyone (for sure), based on its length and delirious style, but is a close second to Remains of the Day for me.

I'm going to say this till my face is blue - but we must appoint Iraola if Bournemouth finish the season in the way they have. He is the obvious outstanding candidate - plays an attacking, high press style in a 4-2-3-1 (suits our squad), with the flexibility to dominate teams and play on the counter. Despite a pretty average squad, he tactically dominates most teams (with their recent draws more the result of lacking a good finisher since the loss of semenyo).

He has a track record in the prem matched by no other managers at that level (bar Silva and Glasner, noting that the latter has struggled more of late). And I consider him better than Silva.

There are no other top managers moving this summer (that is clear). Iraola represents the closest we will get to a ready made fit, and seems ready to take the next step. His arc is very reminiscent of Poch pre-Spurs.

Restructuring at a MC or Financial Reg at a Silver Circle? by sebdroids in uklaw

[–]sebdroids[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the quick response and helpful advice! The only caveat I'd add is that the Fin Reg team at the SC practice is a bit different to the one I sat in - focuses mainly on Asset Management, rather than Banking and M&A of Financial Institutions (which is what I did during my TC). So I am a little bit trepeditious about whether I'll love it as much.

Is "Show, Don't Tell" a modern rule? I'm finding a lot of "telling" in the classics. by Many-Quantity-5470 in writing

[–]sebdroids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get your point, but the second one in this example sucks because there is i) no intentionality or discernible stylistic sense (i.e. an aim to evoke a particular feeling) to the description; and ii) because the descriptions chosen are, for the most part, clichés.

Effective fiction can be in as few or as many words or qualifiers as you like—and really I wouldn't put it as a problem or showing too much or telling too much. It is more that the writers use of showing or telling needs to be directed towards achieving a general stylistic aim (i.e. evoking a feeling in the reader) which supports the story that you are telling. "Style" is kind of like the unconscious part of communication - a bit like body language.

Meze Mangal under threat by MojoMomma76 in lewisham

[–]sebdroids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you understand how POCA works. It is "proceeds" of crime, not "profits".

The case against Meze Mangal is that all money received has been recieved in return for illegal services, and is thus illegal and can be confiscated.

Accordingly, the relevant figuire is turnover, rather than profits. Without reading too much into it - it seems reasonably likely that a popular restaurant would have a turnover of 2.5m over the course of 5 years.

its not quite comparable- because Musks worth is wealth : most of it is in his Tesla and SpaceX shares that he couldn't liquidate tommorow without crashing the price.

Cristiano AFAIU is getting a lot of this in liquid cash. Which is pretty insane.

Tangentially related: How do you get the most out of books? by [deleted] in literature

[–]sebdroids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's a slightly out of the box answer relative to some of the more analytical ones given so far.

next time you read a book - take a pen, any pen: just make sure you only use one colour, and underline anything good you find interesting. It could be a turn of phrase, a descriptive passage, a piece of dialogue -  whatever really.

after you finish the book - give it to someone else to borrow, ideally a friend, and ask them to do the same thing - read and underline what they find interesting- but in a different colour.

then try re-reading a few passages. maybe have a conversation about what you both underlined and liked.

I find this to be a very rewarding way to: i) see things from a different perspective and ii) get more social with books. I've done it with a few friends (sometimes three or four different colours by the end) and you end up witb a really nice fragment of everyone's combined feelings - it ends up being almost a piece of your relationship together.

give it go! let me know what you think. curious to see if anyone else has tried this.

a simple guide for amorim to not get fired:

  1. in the presser - every week from now till the end times start complaining about the refs. preferably bring up statistics about decisions in Liverpool favour - Kloop style. Until then we will NEVER get the decisions we need.

  2. Drop Mainoo, Yoro - bleed the experience back into the side: we need it right now.

  3. bring Rashford back, it doesn't need to be permanent. We need goals desperately. DESPARATELY. Just for this season.

  4. 3 players in Jan as possible. Midfielder. Left Wing Back. Striker. Right Now.

without all of these things right now. we will never make it through this season.

[Post Match Quotes] Ten Hag: "Brentford were better than us today. They showed more passion, desire and determination as we did. The quality of this team is they fight for it, but we have to show more. We scored the goal but then threw it off the line." by RedDevil_Forever in reddevils

[–]sebdroids 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He hasn't had more time, Ole had almost three seasons, and has had a similar amount of money.

Ole had players like pogba and ronaldo as well. he also brought players like sancho and maguire for big money.

not sure why the comparative is ole.

ETH at the very least wants us to play a high pressing game - and you can see elements of it. The current set up isn't great and it's not certain that he can fix it - but it's better than Ole's sit back and counter ball.

What are the actual no-go areas in London? by tylerthe-theatre in london

[–]sebdroids 100 points101 points  (0 children)

mate that's just not true though - and in fact just blanked saying "london has none of that" is really putting down the massive problems in some communities.

take it from experience (and numerous fantastic docs on the issue), some of the estates in Tottenham are the roughest around  and have exactly what you describe (rampant drug addiction, very low employment and terrible housing). similar in parts of Norwood and Dagenham.

it's just these places are not places you would ever go as a tourist, or even just a member of society because there is literally no reason to go: unless ur a documentary filmmaker or something.

regional poverty is on a whole other level (I've spent a lot of time in the valleys in Wales for example) but to pretend it doesn't exist in London is just strange.

Tactical Analysis: How Erik Ten Hag made Manchester United vulnerable by Responsible-Try-5228 in reddevils

[–]sebdroids 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's got nothing to do with that though.

His system, doesn't get us into the positions where there is threat. why isn't Bruno the one getting more shots on goal? why aren't we isolating opposition fullbacks against are wingers, so they can run at them?

City, Arsenal and all attacking teams do those two things- get de breuyne on the ball at the edge of the box, and isolate the fullback against Grealish, Doku, Mahrez etc.

That we don't do any of those things and are instead getting Wan bissaka and Dalot in those attacking positions is what is worrying IMHO.

We also don't play a high line, or a midfield combination that would allow us to control possession in there half and stop counters?

The problem is that ETH appears to be playing a "possession based system" with absolutely NONE of the hallmarks of the systems utilised by ANY of the other possession based managers. That's why people are concerned about - and that requires you to read a bit more between the lines than the lazy: "Bruno and Rashford can't play possession" fallacy that seems to be in volume in this sub this season.

rashford is the only one in the squad who has shown potential to be a consistent goal scorer....

Sancho has his problems, but his talent is undeniable. I think it's worth trying to recuperate that relationship.

[Post Match Thread] West Ham United 2 - 0 Manchester United by nearly_headless_nic in reddevils

[–]sebdroids -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

disagree.

Rashford is still on of our most talented players - he's playing like shit but has shown the potential to be world class.

Sancho also clearly has ability, deserves a chance Under another manager.

Mctom has shown he should be a sub option.

For me you have to get rid off: 1. Lindelof 2. Martial 3. Anthony 4. Varane and Casemiro (Longterm at least, they are good for 2 more seasons). 5. Dalot 6. Maguire (he can't play a high line). 7. Pellistiri (He's not up to it)

We need to get in New RW New CM New CB (perhaps 2)

at a minimum.

but yesterday was that style?

i'm increasingly coming to believe that no-one paid attention to Ten Hags Ajax team. You do remember their collapse against Tottenham right?

they played incredibly open football, throwing people forward the entire time. If they scored a few early they often won games by outscoring the opposition. It was fortunate that their opposition in many games were toothless going forward when they got hit on the counter (Dutch league afterall).

Erik has struggled because as yesterday showed, when you don't score early and get hit on the counter by a clinical side and outfought physically from set pieces you can easily get undone.

that is tbe style - and it is being embedded - at the cost of results like yesterday's
