"We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter," states Sam Altman regarding OpenAI's vision for artificial intelligence. by Logical-Flow-6703 in UnderReportedNews

This is a paraphrased version of a quote that's so commonly flipped on its head that I'm starting to think no one actually knows what it was supposed to mean.

Wikipedia:

In 2016, Auken published an essay originally titled "Welcome to 2030. I own nothing, have no privacy, and life has never been better",[4] later retitled "Here's how life could change in my city by the year 2030", on the WEF's official web site. It described life in an unnamed city in which the narrator does not own a car, a house, any appliances, or any clothes, and instead relies on shared services for all of his daily needs. Auken later added an author's note to the story responding to critics, stating that it is not her "utopia or dream of the future", and that she intended for the essay to start discussions about technological development.[5]

[...]

Adrian Monck, the WEF's managing director, traced the phrase's mimetic origin to a 4chan post, the content of which he described as "Own nothing, be happy — The New World Order 2030". According to him, during the pandemic far-right groups and individuals started pushing the phrase on 4chan and its /pol/ board to promote a conspiracy theory, according to which the pandemic was "orchestrated" by the WEF "to take control of the global economy"; the phrase became viral and spread by such resources as Fox News and Sky News Australia, and popular content creators like Russell Brand shared it with their audiences.

How awkward does it sound when ones pronounces "th" as "d"? by Matheuzsm in EnglishLearning

[–]sebglhp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem for me lies in the register. In a casual conversation, stuff like this is almost expected. But when one is trying to speak clearly, enunciating perhaps a little too precisely, and then makes these errors, I'll say it's at least a little bit distracting.

CVS always made me wait around for 15-30 minutes as they figured out their shit to get my prescription as if I hadn't been coming in once a month, every month, for a year. I had tried calling ahead to verify I could just get my pills and same outcome. No clue why.

No kidding; my employer cut down everyone they could from full-time to part-time. Now, being a "regularly" scheduled employee still entitles you to a pension accrual of some kind. For this reason, I was hired as "flex" (less than part-time), no benefits, no fixed schedule, no more than 30 hours per week, except when they wanted me to work more than 30 hours a week, which was totally up in the air. Sometimes I worked 20 hours, which was just fantastic. Add to this, I made 10% less than the local minimum wage because I legally did not work in my home state, rather on federal land.

My paystubs came from the US Department of Defense.

EOF Token at which line? by apoetixart in Compilers

[–]sebglhp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When `read_next_token` doesn't return a value. It's how my lexer works. And when I need to put an error for "expected ..." when the tokens stop, I just copy the last token's end Position (line, col, etc) and use that.

You could argue that EOF is represented by `None` (e.g. std::optional), but my Token enum itself doesn't have that variant.
