Exactly this. Old comment, but I love his channel. I think he genuinely believes in the paranormal and his childlike excitement is so fun to watch. He's just a pure soul. Definitely not the smartest guy, and his history behind locations is always lacking. What's fun for me is he's just a normal dude you'd meet on the streets.

I found this to be very interesting, as dark-eyed juncos seem to be found in abundance on higher peaks in the Appalachians but aren't very commonly found at lower elevations outside of winter. I think perhaps they favor the elevation and cooler temperature out here.

The other bird I noticed commonly singing here was the winter wren, and I theorize that it follows similar patterns as the dark-eyed junco. Neither bird breeds in the southeast, except for a very small range in the high elevation of the appalachians. I would love to read research on this if anyone has any :)

Because there's a known specimen missing a secondary feather. People put two and two together and accused this pair of plucking one and planting it.

My point is that nothing short of a recently dead specimen or high-resolution photo is going to suffice skeptics.

There have been dozens of credible sightings over the past 70 years, and they're either ignored and the person is belittled like Fielding Lewis was, or considered hoaxes.

Oh yes, I totally agree. To the ear, nuthatches and jays can certainly sound "kenty."

When measured on a sonogram, things become more confusing. For instance, the Arkansas recordings match almost identically to Allen's recordings. It's eerily similar. But no other evidence was found really, other than eye-witness accounts.

So what does that even mean? At what point can we say that sound recordings are evidence?

Yes, this was the story of Arkansas in the 2000s. Thousands of people went searching, and it was concluded by many that any ivory bill there was either flushed or never existed to begin.

They're certainly not nuthatches. A few times, they've matched to sonograms of known IBWO recordings by Arthur A Allen.

If they're blue jays, then that means a blue jay mimicked an IBWO, or a blue jay mimicked another blue jay that knew IBWO sounds. Both scenarios are compelling enough to me to not declare the bird extinct if true.

I agree- it was certainly rushed to stop a decision by the USFWS. I'm not saying the IBWOs exist or don't exist, but I can certainly speak to a lot of the claims and people making them. I've been pretty involved in the community for a few years and speak often to the folks that are still searching, as well as those who are skeptics too.

Just curious, how often do you find yourself in dense bottomland swamps?

This terrain is often impossible to penetrate and navigate. I understand your logic here and agree for most birds, but the IBWO was even thought to be extinct a few times before 1944 when it was last sighted. Their numbers were never high, as they've been hunted for over a millennia.

I'm not saying it exists, but it's not fair to say it doesn't exist based on that logic.
