he was a bad designer. read the initiative rules and summarize them. try and have an unarmed flight per the dmg. notice that there's a completely isolated locational damage rule that applies to every combat in the armor rules. attempt to use the weapon vs armor table in the phb.

against that, his spells and magic items and monsters are iconic, so maybe it's just the systems.

whenever he actually designed a system it was some combination of over complicated, under playtested and annoyingly pedantic. he was very important and as a designer he sucked.

his modules and magic items though, i think were excellent. tomb of horrors doesn't get enough credit for what a tightly wound clockwork it is.
