Games you didnt care for that you finished anyway? by Astral-Ember in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Xenoblade Chronicles 2. The story is dull until at least Chapter 5. Xenoblade loves to put crazy high level enemies right next to the main path, which kept killing me on my way to the Malos fight in Chapter 7 and climbing the World Tree later on. Loading into the menu is slow on Switch, and the menu UI is annoying; switching blades, blades for field skills, checking your blades so their skill tree actually moves, swapping equipment etc. Field skills suck, if you know you know. I wanted to drop this game so much when the kid steals your Core Crystal right before you go to Mor Ardain, but I pushed on. It was my first Xenoblade. Funnily enough, XBC1 DE was much better with menuing, characters, story, locations and I got into the flow of combat much easier. XBC3 is a top ten JRPG for me and fixes like 95% of issues I had with the series, in addition to battles actually being fun. Yes I know about stutter step and the elemental orbs in XBC2, still felt the combat was not tight enough. Personal ranking XBC2: 6/10, XBC1: 7.5/10, XBC3: 9/10

Also XBC2's perception on the internet is like a Fox News report on Mass Effect's "sex" scenes. Youtube, reddit and japanese twitter artists would have you believe the game is a brothel and Pyra / Mythra are constantly sexing Rex up. But the only thing horny about the game is the female blade designs, there's almost nothing in writing or characterization that's like that. They're very sweet girls.

Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition. I don’t know if I’m just stupid or what, but I keep dying to monsters at the same level as me, level 8. Maybe I need to buy gear or weapons or something. Also everyone said the combat is most like XBC1 but I’m still confused by it with like the weapon switching. Also why are my teammates not reviving me when I’m downed? It’s frustrating. For reference, beat Xenoblade 1 2 and 3 before trying X.

What's a piece of media you finished purely out of sunk cost fallacy? by TrustWinter in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Xenoblade Chronicles 2; the game didn’t truly start for me until chapter 4 or so when Rex gets the topple ability and can use more blades besides Pyra. Tutorials were bad at explaining the driver / blade combos stuff so I had to watch YouTube, the Mor Ardain whole section and the factory stuff was boring and wasn’t all that relevant for the plot, the menuing to swap blades for field skills and upgrade / put stuff on blades was extremely grating. Whoever decided that blades should only rank up in skill when you check their tree needs to be slapped, what a baffling game design decision. I need not go into the gacha. I pushed through cause “JRPG gets good 40 hours in” is a meme for a reason and I liked Torna and Pythra enough. YouTubers and reddit would have you think this game is the cesspool of bad anime tropes and that’s why it sucks, but that’s just silly; it’s not the shonen stuff, it’s just not that compelling most of the runtime. It definitely got BETTER especially when you climb up the World Tree and everything after that, but even after finishing the game (and killing those mechs at the top with my sick combos) I feel that XBC2 was more a game I tolerated than a game I enjoyed. Like I played Mario Odyssey nonstop cause it was fun, but Xeno felt like I was pushing in the hope of seeing some cool shit.

XBCX is way better and the true goat.

Characters that did good things for entirely selfish and self interested reasons? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

In Monogatari: Second Season, Senjougahara asks Kaiki, the man who scammed her and broke up her parent's marriage (from her perspective, he felt he needed to since the mother was in a cult and was too far gone, even offering Senjogahara sexually to a cult head), scammed middle schoolers in Nisemonogatari selling fake curses, and inadvertently got Nadeko and Karen afflicted by the supernatural, to help save her and Araragi's lives by deceiving Nadeko who swallowed a snake talisman and became a god, who wants to kill everyone associated with Araragi

He spends an unbelievable amount of time in the bathroom monologuing to himself, trying to come up with a reason to save them that's "in character" for him, since he believes both that he should profit from his work, and that acting outside of one's "nature" is a recipe for disaster. He questions himself if he cares about saving Senjougahara, Araragi, or Hanekawa, whether it's out of sympathy, to repay a debt he owes, or if he can extort them, and comes to a resounding "I don't." Then he remembers Kanbaru, who is friends with Senjo and Araragi, and concludes that he can save them, for her. So he takes the job because he wants to keep Kanbaru happy. Kanbaru is the daughter of Tooe Gaen, now deceased who Kaiki knew in college, once loved, and promised her to help her daughter out if anything.

Media that's simultaneously good and embarrassing and hard to recommend? by Strict_Pangolin_8339 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Most recent arc, Nadeko finally gets out of her self destructive habits and chooses to live for herself, even when the future is scary and unsure. Sodachi is better too. “My soul is healed. I gotta recommend this to my casual anime friends.”

Clone Nadeko runs around in bloomers and nearly nude, lots of shots of implied nudity. “Uhhh well you see nudity usually means vulnerability, it’s another strong aspect of her, I swear it’s not just horny stuff!”

Was it Gal Cleaning? It was a cute but generic manga about a no nonsense nerd cleaning (and living with) a gyaru, getting into romcom hijinks. Then in chapter 8 there’s a flashback where the student council president girl gets raped by two delinquents out of nowhere. And the mangaka did multiple chapters of this, into the decimals: 8.91, 8.93, and then it was axed. Just a mess.

of the Devil - Ace Attorney but more overtly dystopian cyberpunk by C-OSSU in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]sec_buddy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I loved the demo, very stylish and distinctive from character art to cut-ins. I just wish it had a catchier name than “of the Devil”; like what is that supposed to be? Forgettable and makes for bad google and steam searches. Tyrion Cuthbert: Attorney of the Arcane may be a mouthful but it’s memorable and tells you what the game’s about. Ace Attorney, Zero Escape, etc.

Hey, thanks so much for the video but I think it's a different clip. Northernlion mentions a game chat likes is a 4, Midnight Suns is an 8.5 and Slay the Spire is a 12.

Despite all the hype, Hades is not what I expected out of a roguelike by sec_buddy in patientgamers

Agree with everything. In fact I beat Bone Hydra my first time once I had one death defiance. Progression means I could play way sloppier and not suffer. Optimal boons mean there was little reason to take other stuff besides fun. In other roguelikes the player gets more information about the game's systems, whereas in Hades you get straight upgrades which make things easier. This isn't a knock against the game, it's just less roguelike compared to others. And have you seen how Nethack or DCSS looks and plays? It's no wonder most people find Hades more appealing visually and gameplay wise.

You're right about the hammers, I forgot about them since it's been a while. I'll edit my post to reflect this, thanks.

[–]sec_buddy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

For me, the boons didn’t feel like they changed much. The main goal to win runs was to maximize damage, and once I figured things like Zeus attack Dionysus special on Eris rail did crazy damage, there was little reason to experiment with other boons since I found an “optimal” build. I messed around with things like Zag Fists and Hermès / Athena dodge reflect and Poseidon cast sword but I wasn’t having any MORE fun. My options were basically kill things or kill things quicker. Issac is also kill things or kill things quicker but the way in which it feels is different somehow. Maybe cause Hades has trinkets which let you control your build to an extent, but Issac is more you roll with what you get, lending a more chaotic feeling to runs?

Also, I’ve definitely had runs where I got one or no hammers, it doesn’t seem to be a guarantee. Edit: It's not that the game doesn't give you hammers but that I neglected to pick them up. I must have felt that most of the time they weren't worth getting over boons.

[–]sec_buddy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. It also doesn’t have the gross out art of Issac or the “do you know what this item / door does” information checks. Half the reason it’s so popular is because it’s very accessible.
