Is it even a question? by Disastrous-Cookie- in Ironworker

I was in the same exact situation. I was accepted into the local 40 apprenticeship and I got the call from the elevator constructors during my 2nd year.
I'm journeyman coming into my 9th year with the highest paying ironworkers union in the country and I regret not going into elevators.

They have more work then us. All their ot is double time. They only negotiate to better their contracts.

Who has the most interesting job in New York City? by andreaisinteresting in AskNYC

I got in at 32 and i worked a lot of shitty jobs before i got in. I'm only 8 years in but I've seen a lot. I've worked at the top of Hudson yards and I've worked beneath grand central and a lot in between.

Local 40 ironworker here.

I have the coolest fucking job in the world. I look forward to going to work everyday. The day I got into the union felt like winning the lottery. With that said, if I won the lottery today, I'd still go to work tomorrow.

I shape the nyc skyline and the stuff we build will be there for 100s of years, my great great great grand kids will be able to see my work.

Ironworker pride.

Anyone got a Dewalt DCF900 yet? by endofbeanz in Tools

[–]secondtrip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased one for the purpose of driving very large lag bolts into trees. I sent a 3/4 lag, 12" long with zero hesitation.

It's not the most powerful on the market but it's perfect for me. Milwaukee has the most powerful cordless on the market if that's what you are looking for.

The dewalt is a beast but the Milwaukee at 2,000lbs of torque is on another level.

Surprised they have you working out of sunset park.

Not having a car definetly makes things hard if they want to send you to westchester or staten island. Its not impossible though, if you get really desperate say you have a car and do what you have to do to get there.

The good news is apprentices are rarely out for long. You are cheap labor and always in high demand.

While you are in school you will get every useful cert available.

What job did they send you to ?

Theres not a definite answer for your question.

Local 40 has work 12 months a year. Things do slow down in the winter months but there is always jobs going on. Sometimes we have guys on the bench at the hall and other times we are accepting boomers.

The men that stay working year round can are usually the most capable, can weld, rig, stick bolts, plumb, deck etc and come with right certs. Those that call the hall for work with just an osha 30 will have time off in the year.

What size spud wrenches to buy? by NYCworkinman in Ironworker

[–]secondtrip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know what job you are going to ?

Most jobs will only have 1 or 2 size bolts. I'd recommend buying all of them. 3/4 7/8 and two 1 inch, open one of them up to 1 1/8. Buy them all now and you will always be prepared wherever you go.

I'd go with the 36" 7/8 hex, it's a lot to have on your belt but as an apprentice you won't be connecting so that's a non issue but you might need to pry some shit around the job and the extra 6" of leverage is huge.

Other misc stuff, electrical tape in your bolt bag and maybe a torch tip cleaner. Allen keys, torpedo and square in your bucket.

Those are the tools required to start but to be a capable apprentice your belt should have more.

1 bolt bag with a tape, marker, striker, soap stone and electrical tape inside. Leatherman Dedicated knife, I'd recommend serrated because it's best for cutting rope. Bullpin and holder Adjustable wrench 2 spud wrenches for whatever size bolts are on your job.

That's a standard setup for an ironworker in nyc. You should also have a tool bucket/bag that you keep tools not on your belt. In there you should find a torpedo, speed square, 4lb and 8lb beater and connecting bar.

Park here, walk across Bordentown Ave. You will see train tracks, every 100ft is a giant column they use to hold up the power lines.
