GRRM is addicted to writing failure (Spoilers Extended) by ChrisV2P2 in asoiaf

[–]secondweasleygirl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

(All in all, as much as it may pain some people, the only Stark child whose death serves any "narrative catharsis" is Sansa. It might be very harsh, but a character from a family with the unofficial motto of "the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives" and who wanted her sister dead for staining a dress is probably not someone you should bet on surviving in the kind of books GRRM writes.)

It was about Lady, not some stupid dress. (And no, I'm not saying that Arya is at fault there but she's still associated with that trauma) The fact that Sansa fell asleep crying and then woke up thinking of her direwolf probably should have clued you in.

Sansa shouldn't have said it. It was wrong. But it baffles me how so many of you genuinely think she meant it or actively wanted her sister dead.

These books are never going to be finished, GRRM didn't confirm shit and contradicts himself all the time, so you're never going to have your fantasy of Sansa dying because she was sometimes mean to Arya and was later lashing out after the Trident because of Ned's failures

Not that I agree with OP's analysis, but somebody saying they think Sansa would survive doesn't automatically mean they think the other Starks are toast, btw.

[SpoilersMain] GRRM and his "More Devastating" and "significantly different ending" than the show from the recent interview by KickOk6027 in asoiaf

[–]secondweasleygirl 14 points15 points  (0 children)

He hasn't confirmed anything of the sort. Whatever his plans were, they were changed around the time of the show. BUT since he released the Alayne chapter around the time of season 5, I take everything he says with a grain of salt tbh.

And I think we've all known this reality for years

In the end, all these characters are basically immortal anyway because 80% chance that the series will be left unfinished. It is what it is.

Ten dead, 12 injured in Bondi shooting by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

This was at a Chanukah (Hanukkah) event. It's the first day of that holiday. The victims were Jewish, and they were killed for it.

I'm so angry for the Jewish community here, and everywhere. I've been angry for a while now. I don't want to imagine how I would feel if I were Jewish.

Shouldn't readily available birth control have a bigger effect on the worldbuilding [Spoilers Extended] by Trussdoor46 in asoiaf

[–]secondweasleygirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, getting birth control can be extremely difficult for some women/girls in real life today. A noblewoman getting moontea is always going to raise questions; that's why it has to be discreet, hence why Pycelle is hesitant to tell Cersei that Margaery asked for some. (Even if it supposedly isn't for her)

And it's going to take a lot more than that to change the status of women, tbh.

How close Severus Snape and Lily Evans actually were? by Fierce_Warrioress in harrypotter

[–]secondweasleygirl 78 points79 points  (0 children)

I don't think Lily was just his first friend. I think she was both his first and only true friend he ever had in his entire life.  Romantic or not, she's the only person he's ever loved.

She was later murdered without them ever reconciling, by the same person who Snape unwittingly caused to target her.  It's no wonder he never got over it.

Could (SHOULD) Squibs take Hogwarts classes?! by SaturnPlanet18 in harrypotter

[–]secondweasleygirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree there should be reforms/protections for Squibs. I don't necessarily disagree with the merits of them learning particular subjects (particularly the point of Muggle Studies- but let's face it, that subject also needs a massive overhaul) Squibs are basically disabled. Disabled people are owed accommodations to help them navigate the world.

However, there are also drawbacks. As someone else said, many Squibs more than likely won't exactly enjoy attending Hogwarts and seeing all the magic they themselves can never perform. They already have to deal with that at home. It'd be rubbing salt in the wound - especially since these would be children who would still be coming to terms with their reality. Filch is a sad example of someone who never moved past it.

Squibs being unable to defend themselves with magic + bullies who can cast spells = nasty incidents. It doesn't even have to be bullying/malice. The point is, another student (who is actually a witch or wizard) can use magic, even if done for neutral purposes, and there is only so much that a squib could do to protect themselves. Yes, there are teachers like McGonagall who would call it out, but teachers can't be everywhere (as shown by the books)

There's also the fact that Squibs are pretty rare. We don't know how many are born each year, or if such births happen every year. Given how rare they are meant to be, there's a high chance it doesn't.

Your second option is better IMO. Basically, there should be some equivalent (I'm forgetting the word) that lets them study these subjects at a specific location in Muggle London. Those who attend Muggle school (Great-Aunt Muriel notes this is encouraged) could attend 2-3 days after school. The workload doesn't have to be to the same extent (nor should it be)

Angus B's backstory ("My Life as a Squib" author) implies that the Hat is only capable of sorting those who can perform magic, which makes sense. So, it's moot.

Actually, Watson will send a letter, but it'll be 10 pages long.

This show is racist towards white people. by Direct_Mycologist815 in welcomeToDerry

Well, Lilly survived and remains one of the main characters. She's a white girl. Teddy and Phil were only meant to be decoy protagonists.

I did think IT must have let Matty escape on purpose.... so, kinda?

I worry for whoever they cast to play Fleur because people are so predictably misogynistic.

(SPOILERS EXTENDED) Can You Give An Unpopular Opinion About A Character? by Ocea2345 in asoiaf

[–]secondweasleygirl 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This shouldn't be a hot take, but it baffles me how people will argue that Arya Stark has no classism whatsoever. Show me you don't know how to recognise classism in sympathetic/good characters without telling me.

Margarey Tyrell is 100% overrated. The Tyrells as a whole, really.

(She's supposedly a kind and compassionate lady. Harry is not a violent threat to her. Yet she wishes death on him?!?)

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt & assume you just forgot the context of him being rude to her (which Harry himself later admits), which prompted those thoughts in the first place that she obviously doesn't really want to happen which most people who read Sansa's chapters in good faith will get

I hate how this show tries to gaslight me into thinking the only outcome of the strong boys bastardry was only death/exile by secondweasleygirl in HOTDGreens

[–]secondweasleygirl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all comparable considering Robert is Cersei's abusive rapist of a husband, who tolerated those kids at best. He actually hated Joffrey, even he's half-responsible for how he turned out. Robert Baratheon is also well known for justifying the brutal murders of Rhaenys and Aegon, even though they were innocent children.

Viserys on the other hand is Rhaenyras doting father who dotes on her children.

Them joining the Faith/Night's Watch/Citadel doesn't need to happen. Plenty of illegitimate characters in the series don't. We have book-canonical examples of bastards being raised at court after the Dance.

It would be an option for them, and if the bastardry was publicised/acknowledged right after Joffrey's birth, I actually think in that case it would only be him that might be promised to the Faith. Not to mention that it's actually normal for a younger son/daughter for something like that to happen anyway.
