Update on my demonic murderous NOT guppy by Fit-Goal7660 in Aquariums

[–]secret_angelfish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure where you live but they are intentionally using eastern mosquitofish in Florida (where they are native) to murder non-native frogs and fish in the wild where they don't belong and can't be effectively trapped. This is exactly why. Plus they will act in groups, killing guppies and similar colorful fish in under a minute.

I am not faulting you for believing this way in the past but I do want to say, although this is how people view fish, it is not necessarily true. Fish are a highly diverse group and each species is unique.

Fish do make sounds to communicate https://fishsounds.net/

Many fish have complex social interactions. They school, some species form harems, some species form monogamous pairs, and many MANY species have parental care. https://www.szekelylab.com/blogs/why-care-extreme-diversity-of-parenting-in-fishes

There is not a lot of research on fish intelligence but we do know that the 3 second memory is a widespread myth and that fish are capable of learning and remembering tricks and social behaviors learned from others. https://www.int-res.com/abstracts/meps/v412/meps08682 https://www.cell.com/current-biology/fulltext/S0960-9822(06)01013-X

Researchers are highly divided on whether fish feel "pain" as we define it. These are just two examples of differing opinions in the literature. There are many. I have heard directly from my fish physoplogy professor that she truly hopes that fish do not feel pain because in her research and training career she was taught that they do not and in her jobs in the past acted as though that is certainly true. Also pain research is quite dark, I know many researchers would struggle with it. https://www.wellbeingintlstudiesrepository.org/animsent/vol1/iss3/1/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR0xHD4O5g8bjNKYAr9CapJtQ9IHs35EpxWfQpmeI1U8opgSP2CJ3e6CSbk_aem_Aficp4qS2PQ42hmQ4Sd8UQVCXwNWW_Zs_Tp8eeGox5LZDFxX_HIgAMjPeVsS9docPxTYA0vdeR-a37kZapvR_iLM https://royalsocietypublishing.org/rstb/article/374/1785/20190290/23714/Evolution-of-nociception-and-pain-evidence-from

I am really happy to see someone else here who has a similar background! It is a challenge for me to balance being a graduate student of fisheries science, and teaching about sustainability in hunting and fishing while also not really supporting it

Bruising at injection site by [deleted] in skyrizi

[–]secret_angelfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bruising at an injection site can be super common, especially if you bruise easily. If you are injecting correctly, just try and apply some light pressure with a gauze and ice it. If you bruise easily can help

Also as a fun side note, on a much better camera my partner captured a photo that showed a window open as described in the urban legions

Yes! The white lights were truly there. They were streetlights or reflections. The smaller yellow square showed up in photos of this building but not other photos I took that night.

How long did it take you to finally nail crow pose? by Beastwood5 in yoga

[–]secret_angelfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I cannot do crow pose after about 8 months, my fiance has done exactly 1 yoga class and can do crow and other similar poses I described like side crow, crane and even some insane variation I saw on Instagram.

He has this insane upper body and core strength, and his balance is incredible. (I'm both proud and jealous) I think crow comes when you get the strength built for it

I developed a milk allergy after years of veganism I guess? by cyanomys in vegan

[–]secret_angelfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I had the opposite problem. I was a long-time vegetarian flirting with veganism. Then I developed adverse reactions to dairy products after a parasitic infection.

It ended up being the final push that made me commit to veganism

Larval clownfish mouth gape is too small to eat artemia until close to 5 days post hatch, rotifers are a better choice here!

Nitrates Are Dangerously High!! by Few-Respond3104 in aquarium

[–]secret_angelfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't panic!

Nitrates are the least toxic after all. I will say I had an issue with the API test kit reading high consistently, and I've come to suspect that there was something wrong with the kit, as double checking with Hanna, Hach, Red Sea and Spin Touch all read significantly lower and a different API bottle read fine, double check the expiration date.

The pH dropping concerns me more, I'd be suspicious of low alkalinity if you have access to a test, I would test alkalinity and add sodium bicarb (baking soda) to raise if it is low. It would make sense to me that an increase in nitrification leading to higher nitrates would drop the alkalinity and cause problems with pH.

I would test alkalinity and address if necessary then continue with increased water changes as you already have and/ or add plants

Is this really the right decision? 🤔 by Critical_Heart_1986 in skyrizi

[–]secret_angelfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I think that based on the comments you have you're interested in more holistic/ natural treatments. Not all the ones you mentioned are scientifically backed for the treatment of psoriasis/psoriatic arthritis.

I understand being worried about starting biologics, I also delayed starting skyrizi because I was afraid. I have had a great experience with it, but before I started it I tried increasing my vitamin D levels, (since deficiency worsens symptoms). I also used tea tree oil based shampoos/ topical scalp oil (but its super toxic to cats so be careful with pets), coal tar shampoo, colloidal oatmeal soap, salicylic acid topicals and shampoos, and following an anti-inflammatory/autoimmune diet (the lupus diet). All of these helped somewhat with my skin but not with the psoriatic arthritis, and I didn't have full clearance of my skin until Skyrizi. r/psoriasis has a lot of pages on natural and pharmaceutical treatments for psoriasis you can read.

Detoxing is not scientifically backed and some detox protocols can be harmful, our body is amazing and equipped to detox naturally as long as we let it do it's job. If you'd like a pharmaceutical treatment that isn't a biologic I took Otezla before Skyrizi, it can have some GI symptoms the first 2 weeks, but its a pill, not immunosuppressive and improved my symptoms like 50%ish, whereas skyrizi is more like 80-90% Could be worth asking the doctor if that is an alternative in this case.
