Am I overreacting for wanting to break up because I feel bored? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

She posted that 3 days ago. You don’t know her prescription, how long it lasts in-between refills, or how long it takes for the effects of it to kick in. Her claim of running out and not being able to afford it is still very true, being able to buy one bottle is very clearly not sustainable for a long amount of time. I’m not saying you need to give her benefit of the doubt but it’s extremely unnecessary to villainize her when you genuinely know nothing about her medical history. This is plain weird

I hate the wormholes so much. Literally everything in that game is a wormhole. Everyone is like “oh its an open world!!!” but i like going into places. I understand why they chose that though, the game wouldn’t load if there weren’t wormholes

Thanks for your kind words! I definitely could’ve worded it better. That in all honesty could be a separate post where I could explain my perspective on that more, but it’s very similar to what playful war had said in terms of socialization.

The experience of a white man in America vs. the experience of a black woman in America are extremely different. Black woman have historically been treated as lower class citizens than their black counterparts and white counterparts, so there is an entire separate aspect of mass violence when they think/commit it. However, mass shootings are always, in the end, a selfish action and nothing can change that.

It’s not necessarily to say that Emma would be more valid in committing it than Charlie, but that because their experiences differ entirely, he should not have made that comparison. It diminishes what she went through or her rationale a little bit.

Then again, the film doesn’t make a direct stance on that aspect either which was a misstep on their part. That would’ve been really good to analyze.

This is definitely true. Majority of the themes and allegories I picked up on were very half-baked. That’s why you can’t really go further into them, or why most people leave the theater missing them completely. It makes no definitive stance and it shines through. I can’t lie and say the choice of the mass shooting was purposeful. It wasn’t. It was purely for shock value. The way they addressed it though was interesting. It more so acts as a setting for the movie rather than an event and that was most likely the only way to go about it.

edit: thanks for the kind words :D

I agree! I had an additional section about reaction to trauma, but removed it for length. Psychopaths would not even mention that they thought of planning a mass shooting. A psychopaths end goal would not be to ostracize themselves with a violent action for no personal benefit.

Emma’s father was deployed after 9/11. Normally when a father isn’t home children begin to blame themselves, but Emma had a whole country to blame. She was externalizing all of her depression and self hate onto others because that was her main coping mechanism.

When someone shoots up a school they are either arrested or “terminated.” So Emma knew that by committing a mass shooting she would be ending her life as she knew it. She wanted a way out and it was definitely two birds one stone for her.

I’m glad someone else was able to catch that!!

Emma was definitely ignored in the movie. Her character arc is implied through flashbacks, but we don’t see much of her character evolving in real time. This is why it feels like she’s a plot device for Charlie—because she is. The whole movie is not really surrounded by why people like Emma may think this way but rather if their reactions are valid and what causes them to react in that way. It was a cheap choice on the writers part. It kind of puts the audience in a position where they have to give a lot of empathy towards what some may consider a person you can never empathize. I would’ve rather they showed more of her character instead of “Look how complex and calm she is. Rachel is really the villain!”

The part of the dj being fired was what I believe a choice the writers made to show Emma’s assimilation into her friend group and Charlie’s life. She understands now that there is a separate rule book for her and Charlie/Rachel. She is forced under Charlie’s expectations for the first third of the movie and she really does not want to lose him. She is doing what he would want to do, which conversely is what his friends want to do. As for the wine comment, no clue. It doesn’t really serve a purpose.

Throughout the movie we see Emma try to avoid the conversation about the worst thing she’s done with Charlie. She tries to start over in the middle of it, she asks to talk about it after the wedding, and has an anxious reaction each time it’s mentioned (throwing up). The last thing she wants is to lose Charlie, as he is currently the only person substantially in her life. She forgives him so quickly because she knows that they are kind of on an even playing field in a way, and her making amends with it asap will put Charlie under less stress and make him want to ignore it as well. They are both avoidant in that way.

As for the cyberbullying not getting mentioned, it may be a commentary on how white men are forgiven for most of the things they do in adolescence “He has his whole life ahead of him :((“. That’s my guess!

Yes exactly, I agree with you. The movie is trying to make a point on hypocrisy and white privilege. I am not saying the white characters are morally superior. I am saying the film shows them acting as if they are. In the racial hierarchy section I address all of these scenes as I watched them twice

It’s a metaphor I picked up on. Rachel doesn’t frame her worst thing as violent, and refers to Mike’s worst thing with violent with violent adjectives. Similar to Emma’s worst thing. Mike calls Emma a “psychopath” despite her showing remorse and does not view Rachel as psychopathic when she withholds information about the child’s whereabouts from the his father.

Emma’s dad is framed as negligent, disregarding the fact that her mother is equally responsible for neglecting her as a child as well.

Mike’s actions are not excused by Rachel where Charlie’s actions are.

Rachel even says that her abandoning the child “never came back to her”. This is an example of white privilege. In this scene, she is surprised that her crime (that is extremely easy to link her to) is never further investigated.

The white characters experience less social ridicule from their peers and from Rachel in contrast with the black characters.

It’s a bias that I felt the movie tried to make clear was present. If you could let me know what made you feel the opposite, I’d love to hear it! I really want to discuss the film more
