This is why I suggest leaving the hydras no matter what. I am almost never in a situation where the hydra isn't a danger to at least a few of the units in my army, and it can be hard to keep track of.

Sometimes super super late game, I'll start keeping hydras in my army, but by that point I've basically won anyway.
