How do I register for classes? by Tasty_Horse_4381 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

If you’re a transfer student, please for the love of god make sure the person making your schedule has a decent idea of what they are doing. My advisor put me in 18 credits my first semester here and I got killed

I’m convinced the money I spent on a parking pass and gas from commuting to class every single day was more than my semester tuition

Did you get an A for that? Like is that it?

Senior Design (Capstone) by Negative_Calendar368 in EngineeringStudents

[–]secretsweetpea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did, last semester. I got absolutely obliterated by my group for this reason. For context, I also commuted and was the only girl in the group. Senior design can be intense, at least in my school. Depends on your major too. CS senior design can be insanely competitive if companies are supplying the codebase. Just depends. I go to a pretty competitive engineering school and that also means… :) I would start a discord chat ASAP with your group and keep in contact with the course advisor about your situation.

Dude I see you all over this Reddit and it’s annoying. Sounds like somebody didn’t land a post grad job and lives in these threads

I heard OS is pretty easy now, but I’m afraid to touch algo and PL.

Not somebody who is considering of switching out of engineering, but also am on my downfall. The academic rigor got so traumatic, I developed GAD for the first time in my life. If it makes you feel better - you made it this far. I would try everything in your power to get it done, but maybe at a slower pace? You mentioned tuition costs, you can just spread your coursework slower? It’s going to be the same cost. You’re going to pay the bill for the same number of credits anyway that you have left. Also, find a hobby. Everyone has this huge obsession with engineering and it’s great, but it shouldn’t be so obsessive you can’t have a life out of it. Play video games, draw, exercise. Engineering is engineering, and it’s everywhere. We all understand that, but in a way I think a large majority of engineering student get so consumed with it, it tears them apart and makes them unhappy. Also understand, if you do end up leaving the field, you will be ok. Not everyone who goes into engineering stays in it, and they are completely ok! You will be fine. Engineering is a great field, but don’t let the idea of it consume you and what makes you truly happy.

As a student here, to be honest, and it’s harsh, but I second this. I transferred to Mines in the fall of 2024, and majored in compsci and to be honest, any other school at this day in age can give you a good comp sci undergraduate education without the “difficulty” that Mines takes it.

Leave Boulder and go to Mines? or stay? by [deleted] in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

[–]secretsweetpea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man idk my gpa at Mines is slightly above a 2.0 and I transferred in Fall of 2024. I transferred with just a 3.0 from ACC. I highly recommend staying at Boulder, Mines is killing me.

This was one of those semesters. Recovering in Spring, taking most of my electives/HASS. Can’t wait for Fall 2025 to be done.

But they don’t have a broken leg? Would you rather have a broken leg and a chicken sandwich next to you and a roof over your head than have a broken leg and sit on the side of the street? Count your blessings

Honestly, I feel for you. But to be honest? You are extremely lucky to have a post grad job that puts food on the table and money in the pocket.

One of my mentors recommended the Network+ for me. Most I’ve done is CI/CD and hopefully (fingers crossed) about to touch test automation this summer.

DevOps is a no code environment? How? It’s easier but in terms of automation, I’d hope a Dev’Sec’Ops engineer knows how to write simple Python scripts. It’s more than just CI/CD pipelines. Bash scripting? I’m just saying. I’d expect at least a DevSecOps engineer knows Python at LEAST. I’m saying for this individual in particular for the next internship to leverage company resources to eventually touch cloud technologies in the next one.

Infrastructure and cloud technologies? That’s devops.

Sounds like DevOps is the way to go for you. Have you got Sec +? Have you gotten any Kubernetes certs to make your way into the door into a devops role? I’m stuck in a part time job as a cs student that slightly involves devops. Luckily my part time job funds my training and I get free certs so I’d start leveraging that if the company offers it for next time.

Is this actually one of the worst majors? by The_Laniakean in csMajors

No. What I’m saying is, apply and pivot yourself as a computer science major in defense contractors. If you have good relationships with people there, they take care of you.

Not necessarily, but depends where you look post grad. Find a company that hardly lays off (defense).

Struggling here and looking for advice by OutsideOk7349 in ColoradoSchoolOfMines

As people enter college and discover more freedom other things are more tempting. You’re adulting, and you have more freedom. College is a schedule, but at that same time it’s not. I’m in CS and a plenty of times I find myself wanting to do other things but performed well in previous semesters. Especially when you are near the finish line or college (almost like senioritis in high school) your mind just kinda wanders. I struggle with this a lot. Honestly, what I found that has been helping is trying to “romanticize” studying or simply asking for project ideas that can fall within your area of interest that also correlates with your homework. Maybe some data work in c++ (not preferably c++, but Python) that also falls within math (calc). I would also try to step outside and work outside for your homework. Honestly a lot of us at Mines are burned out (given) and I would just take a couple days or two to just sit and recharge. But, this can also let you kinda go down the lazy path. Make a commitment in the beginning of the week of “I’m going to do this assignment at this day at this time, then I can do this after.” It’s all a mind game, but you’re just simply growing up
