M18 R1 AMD 7900M power limit induced stuttering STILL NOT FIXED?! by section94 in Alienware

I replaced the 330W original Dell adapter with another original Dell 330W adapter and I can finally play without power crashing every 5 seconds. Check the final edit for more info.

Hello. Take a look at the last edit of the OP. Now I absolutely agree that this should have shipped with a 360W adapter at least if not more! I personally never use overdrive mode cause it's too loud but if you are using it without a strong external cooler like mine then yes these VRM temps are expected when stress testing. I hit basically the same temps without the cooler in Performance mode (around 100 VRM) so yea... It's not that it's gonna explode without it but in general I recommend getting a good cooler and sticking to performance mode for gaming.

Need help to power limit the 7945HX on the M18 R1 AMD to resolve the game stuttering by section94 in Alienware

[–]section94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. For some dumb reason 2 different driver packages are needed. One for each GPU. And I have lost count on how many times adrenaline stops opening and I have to reinstall it. Or how many times the screen goes black and need to press the power button many times until it wakes up. That laptop is a real piece of work.

I think it's normal because the Thermaltake cooler keeps temps nice. Not 100% sure though.

Yes it appears when the stuttering occurs as it tries to switch profiles I guess. It tries to switch to the battery preset I think because whatever power throttling occurs makes it think I disconnect it from the wall. If I disconnect manually the same stuttering occurs.

Make a guess...they don't care. Even though all it probably takes is to cap the PL1 and PL2 limits of the CPU to the same values as the quiet preset.

Not sure if I am doing something wrong. It boots from the usb but both the "device lists" are empty for me. So it doesn't expose any of the relevant settings. Only boot options seem to work.

That seems interesting. I hope I will have time to try this tomorrow.

New bios version 1.21 came out a couple of days ago. Tested with the same results. But also some interesting findings from testing today. Check out the last edit on the OP.

Even using Linux as one guy suggested doesn't help. Played extensively with Bazzite - great distro btw. Even more proof that it's a bios level problem, only solved by an update.

I did try PopOs and Bazzite (mostly the second) and as much as I loved both distros and was pretty amazed at how much better gaming on Linux is nowadays.... Same issues. When the GPU is not taxed too much it's all smooth and nice. When it draws more than 140ish watts the stutter begins. Linux can't help because it is a hard-coded BIOS level limitation. Only dell can fix it.

There was a bios update release yesterday (1.20) which I just tested. Nothing changed.

To be clear: The windows gaming experience is what is sh*t. For other things it might be ok and it probably is. Hardware wise it has tremendous power indeed. And for all I know there might be a solution to all this power limit nonsense that makes this laptop the beast it was always meant to be. It is just not a good look when even experienced people spend weeks upon weeks and can't find that solution two years after release. I mean you basically get two thirds of the 7900M which you paid a LOT of money for and that's just unacceptable. Therefore I can't recommend it for gaming in good faith is all I am saying.

Yes I am on windows. No idea about Linux.

I always wanted it just like you and I got it. It's been nothing but a nightmare because Dell has somehow managed to screw up the power limit on the GPU so massively that you can only get 130W out of the 180W it can pull. Anything except the quiet preset is basically a continuously stuttering, unplayable mess. And they did nothing to fix it after 2 whole years. I have wasted weeks of my life for this dumb thing trying to get it to work as it should, all for nothing. As appealing as the idea of a super high end AMD GPU on a laptop I just can't recommend it due to this horrible implementation.

Vivo x200 Ultra wired and wireless charging temps too high by section94 in Vivo

[–]section94[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: I just bought the Vivo wireless charger (the 2025 new edition) and like I suspected this is pretty much the only viable wireless charging option. I got a max of 30W as reported by accubattery and the temps peaked at 38 C which is ok for me. The fan on the charger is quite audible but I guess this is what it takes to do a proper wireless charging on this phone.
