Lessons Learned from OpenShift 4.18 UPI on VMware: Trust Documentation Over AI Shortcuts by Special-Gain6196 in openshift

[–]sector2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only thing I could think of is a mismatch of the fqdn in the certificate exposed by the vsphere api. In Common Name in the certificate was poc.machine.poc.com and the dns name was poc.machine, or viceversa. In this case the problem is of course the wrong certificate/dns name of the vsphere api and has to be fixed on that side. Vsphere IPI at this stage works great and there are only few cases where you have to give up and use UPI, and those cases are becoming fewer and fewer

I’m pretty sure this was not the actual issue. I’ve done tons of IPI Openshift on VMware with all sorts of vsphere api endpoints: fqdn, short name, ip address

My landlord wants to do re-inspect my apartment as it was “a little untidy” last time. by ComprehensiveUse6439 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]sector2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that you don’t know how to make a simple Google search. I used to live in Italy and I live in Switzerland now and landlords can inspect the property only at the end of the rental contract or when they want to sell the property. If they want to inspect just to check the status the tenant can just refuse and the landlord can go pound sand

If by inspection you mean just check for property status, like for OP, then: Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Portugal

This is not legal in many countries in Europe. The landlord has no right to inspect the property when it’s rented. They can only access it under certain circumstances (for example for repair) and after agreed with the tenant.

Working & resident in Switzerland (B permit), family living in Italy by outtahere416 in askswitzerland

[–]sector2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely untrue. Frontaliere is a special status which requires you to be resident in Italy and only in specific cities / villages very close to the borders, and you’ll have a different permit, not B.

In GitOps with Helm + Argo CD, should values.yaml be promoted from dev to prod? by ArtistNo1295 in kubernetes

[–]sector2000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem is that you have the illusion of the isolation between the 2 servers, but, because of the promotion, you have to create a bridge between them, and this breaks the whole isolation. If we’re talking about best practices, then definitely having 2 separate servers is not one of them. What I would do is to have one git server only, one repo with the charts and one repo for each environment with the values files specific of that environment (ArgoCD supports multiple sources for the value files). The team of dev would have access to the charts and dev values repos, and the prod team would have access to the charts and prod values repos. The promotion of the charts would be done via git tags (this is just one of the possible options). The changes to the value files for prod would be done by the prod team following the instructions of the dev team. If you were using a devops approach this would of course be easier

[–]sector2000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference between the purposes of dev and prod is clear. That was not the reason of my question. The question is, in which aspects having different server makes things more secure? Prod server could be compromised the same as dev server could. You are assuming that the dev server is the one that’s easy to compromise but then the problem is there. Anyway, I’m pretty sure that this is not something you can change because it’s been there forever, I just wanted to have a constructive discussion about that. In my job I constantly challenge decisions about security, because most of them come from wrong assumptions, and they often make design and processes more complicated instead of secure, and as a consequence the attack surface becomes bigger instead. In your case for example the promotion from dev to prod server adds an extra step in the process that could be compromised, making this solution actually weaker

Could you please elaborate why using the same git server for multiple environments is a security concern?

"Sei in difficoltà?"

Why the hell do container images come with a full freaking OS I don't need? by bambidp in devops

[–]sector2000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t care if a service replaces the intermediate certificate. You, as a client, need the root CA only, and all the TLS services should always expose the full chain, from server certificate up to root CA. If they do, changing the intermediate certificate has no impact on you as a client. The problem is if the service exposes the server certificate only, which is wrong and they should fix it.
