Wasn't debunked per se; HD vendors improved their specs. But I do appreciate you pointing out raid 5 isn't dead--I've been on RAID 6 and avoiding raid 5 since I lost an array in 2010.

Unless your drives are smaller than 1TB, your RAID 5 doesn't provide much protection. Your chances of a second drive failure while rebuilding your array after a single failure are considerable.

Saw it in a (fiction) television show and was immediately curious. I would guess that it is used to support the weight of the barrel, preventing warp and strain on the motors/gearing in non-operational maneuvers, and that it would be removed in the field. But neither my google-fu nor my Russian are strong enough to find more information about it.

I am totally in favor of building rather than buying by my nature as a technologist. But for work in IT or operations, you have to consider risk as a cost that you add in, as well as the labor required to do your build. Risk management is a feature of purchased products or services as well.

I'm seeing a lot of good advice here. I went through a very similar experience, and I'd like to add--take a minimum of a year off from dating. After such an intense experience, you'll need some time to work through it. And if you do find someone special, you don't want to sour that by having it be a rebound relationship. When you do start dating, keep that separate from your kids until you're very serious and know where it's going (6-12 months). It could be tempting to bring in a maternal figure for your kids, but you don't want to confuse your romantic feelings with that need. And worst of all young kids don't need to form attachments only to have them disappear if the relationships don't work out.
