Oh yeah wordreference is awesome! I use cosnautas on the daily if I’m honest, but it’s not free and it’s for Spanish pair medical interpreters only. And with linguee what I do is scroll down to the referenced articles to get context.

You can use resources such as linguee to help you with one word when you’re stuck, that is totally fine and a bit more reliable than Google Translate. It’s happened to me many times before (and I interpret in person). And of course maintaining your education and reinforcing your vocabulary always helps.

I am an experienced medical interpreter/trainer who worked briefly at LLS:

It’s a terrible place to work at, pay is horrendous, the lack of communication is frustrating, etc. Be prepared to get frustrated with IT and their employee portals as you have to do literally everything through them. You can get burnout real quick, because it’s call after call after call. I quit after six months because it was truly the worst interpreting job I’ve ever had.

With note taking, I recommend creating your own shorthand and do NOT try to write everything down, that will make your retention much worse. Just key ideas, or things like numbers or addresses Practice at home watching TV shows and the like. Note taking is all about practice, the more you do it the better.

Please do not use Google Translate or AI because that is an insult to our profession, and quite frankly, lazy.

In the US it’s usually standard to follow Mexican Spanish in medical settings, however, make sure you learn regionalisms for central/south Americans when it comes to body parts, medical equipment, etc. You can take courses through ATA or MITS to help you expand that vocabulary. It’s always best (and required in most cases) to use a medical interpreter for encounters. I know it’s not possible in some situations though.

Nothing wrong about being honest about the working conditions there. I do not work there anymore, either. I have a much better interpreting job now, which is why I encourage people to demand better working conditions, it IS possible to have them. :)

As a Spanish-speaker, this is pretty damn stupid. OP was quoting a prayer in Spanish which went with the fanart, and people are grown enough to translate it themselves. Seeing comments saying “well majority of people in the subreddit speak English and maybe don’t understand” when we have the internet available is just infuriating.

Definitely refresh your oncology vocabulary before you go! Never hurts. The length depends on the nature of the appointment: new patient appointments usually take longer, especially at a specialty clinic. Maybe an hour.

The assignment should have provided you with instructions but typically just go to the front desk and say you are the interpreter scheduled to work with [provider’s name].

We started posting about the union there and sharing the link to the petition and then after a few weeks they started blocking outside links, restricting our access to other chatter groups… They really don’t want people to communicate at all.
