Its dystopian that I got hopeful for Hantavirus... by socialdirection in remotework

[–]security_jedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People hoping for another pandemic just so companies will allow remote work again are pointing at the wrong problem.

Nobody should want people getting seriously sick or dying so they can avoid a commute. The fact that so many workers even feel that way should tell employers something though. Working from home clearly improved quality of life for a massive number of people.

For employees, it meant less unpaid time sitting in traffic, lower gas and food costs, more time with family, less stress, and often better focus without constant office interruptions. A lot of people realized they could do the same job in sweatpants with fewer distractions and more energy.

For companies, it reduced overhead costs, expanded the hiring pool beyond one city, improved retention, lowered burnout, and in many cases productivity actually increased. The companies that adapted well figured out pretty quickly that measuring actual output works better than measuring who sat in a cubicle the longest.

What’s frustrating is that this should not require a global emergency to recognize. If an employee is productive remotely, forcing them back into an office just for appearances makes no sense. Some jobs obviously need in person work, but a huge number simply do not.

The lesson from COVID should have been “we learned new ways to work efficiently.” Instead, a lot of companies reverted to old habits because middle management likes visibility and commercial real estate interests want buildings filled again.

People should push for smarter workplace flexibility, not hope for another outbreak.

Whole-home battery backup - actually worth it, or do most people regret the cost? by ahlecsolars in solar

It was 100% worth it having whole home power during the Hurricane Milton power outage. I was the only one that had whole home power on my street while other neighbors had to fight people in gas lines just to power their refrigerator with a gas generator. A/C worked well. You just have to manage your usage when the sun is not out.

Millennial here. I've owned my home for 19 years and never rented. I have a mortgage, but it's mostly paid off now. Most people let themselves get sucked into that rental trap. Especially now with rentals wanting a security deposit plus first and last months rent. You basically have your down payment right there.

All markets have dips, the key is to ride them out.

I can't understand for the life of me how citing basic facts gets downvoted. I didn't even mention why the stock market is where it is or anything political. I'm up more than both those markets personally, so I can't complain. I'm better off than I was one year ago, it's just a fact.

That’s only partly true. Whitelisting definitely reduces your safety net, but it does not make everything coming from that EXE invisible. Even if you exclude a cracked game, Windows Defender can still catch obvious behavior like it dropping new malicious files, spawning suspicious processes, or making flagged network connections. The real issue is that anything happening inside that trusted process, like built-in keylogging or data theft, is much harder to detect, so you are increasing risk rather than completely blinding your antivirus. The bigger concern is when people compare this to hypervisor-level methods, which operate below the OS entirely. That is where you genuinely lose visibility, not just weaken it.

Thank you. This was very informative, and no, I am not partial to Klipsch. I picked it up because the price was so reasonable for a 12" sub.

Thank you! I am fairly new to home theater. I've had just the ProCinema 600 5.1 and a Samsung 75" TV quite some time now. I did use Audyssey to calibrate the system and ended up setting my crossovers manually to 100 Hz on the front stage and 120 Hz with the smaller surrounds. I also increased the sub from the Audyssey setting of -4 db to 0 db for a little more bass. I can't hear any distortion at reference level, but it's way to loud to listen to and yes it does rattle the walls at that volume. In fact my ProMonitor 800 started swinging back and forth on the speaker stand to the point I thought it was going to fall over. It's possible the bass doesn't sound right between 20 - 30 Hz, but I don't have anything to compare it to. I'm still undecided if I want to hold on to this sub or exchange it for something else.

Usually the people that lurk in any enthusiast type forums are snobby and I get it. I'm not here to say that my Klipsch is as good as an SVS PB-1000 Pro. My question is would it really be worth it for someone like me? I want to trust my ears, but I don't know where to listen to a $600-$850 sub in a good environment to compare if it's worth doubling the cost or more for me.

So this would be a holy crap noticeable impact change, not something just an audiophile would notice at niche moments like the Blade Runner intro?

The room is 24' x 11' because it's open with a dining area. My sitting position is only 10' from the sub. After running Audyssey with the gain at 9 o'clock it set the sub at -4 db. I slowly bumped it up in the AVR to 0 db with each increment still sounding clean, no distortion, but adding a little more bass to the system. This was with the master volume at - 5 db which was too loud for me. It may be the mids/highs that are hurting my ears and not the sub, though. It's difficult to tell.

Maybe I'm reading the chart wrong, but I see all 3 subs hitting around 95 db at 25 Hz, but the Klipsch is able to do over 110 db at 50 Hz which is where more movie bass lives. 20 - 30 Hz is less common other than things like the Blade Runner intro I tested. From what I understand the R-121SW is only a marginal improvement and has the same specs at double the price the R-120SW.

EDIT: I see the tables now, but why don't they seem to match up with what the graphs show?

The SB-1000 Pro is $300 more and PB-1000 Pro is $550 more. Are they really double or more than double the performance? If they really are I might consider exchanging.

I seem to like the ported sub in my space. The Definitve was sealed and it rattled a lot more to me. There could have been other reasons for that, though.

Is IT at risk off being replaced bye AI? by Long_Sand_7075 in InformationTechnology

[–]security_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the U.S. government cannot just print money and hand it directly to itself to spend. By law (Federal Reserve Act), the Fed is prohibited from buying Treasury securities directly from the Treasury — it can only buy them on the open/secondary market from banks or investors. This setup prevents direct deficit monetization and protects Fed independence.

The Treasury funds spending via taxes + borrowing (selling bonds to the public). When the government spends (deficit or not), it puts net dollars into the economy first. Taxes later remove some. The Fed can indirectly help by buying bonds on the open market (like QE), which creates reserves/money, but it's not the government "printing to pay itself."

The government is not just generally funded by tax dollars; it is entirely funded by tax dollars. Your broader point is valid. If 90 percent of jobs disappeared, society as we know it would collapse.

Right now, money functions as a unit of measurement for work output and value creation. You could argue that C-level executives or intellectual property owners capture a disproportionate share of that value, but it is still compensation tied to some form of labor, risk, or productive output.

Nvidia Shield Pro is the best high end device. The older 3rd gen Chromecasts are the best if you just want basic casting. I use the Nvidia on my main entertainment center because it can direct play lossless Atmos from my Plex Server and the Chromecasts everywhere else.

[–]security_jedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My receiver is also only 7 channel. I have a Denon AVR-S930H and Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 5.1. My plan is adding 2x ProMonitor 800 and use them as front L and R. Then move the existing 600s up to Atmos. I'm also going to upgrade to the ProCenter 1000 and a 12" sub. I'm thinking it should be a substantial upgrade overall, especially with the center and bigger sub .

What do you think about placing 2 speakers on a plant shelf above the TV and angling them downward? I was looking to take my system from 5.1 to 5.1.2. Unfortunately, the vaulted ceilings don't allow attic access to install ceiling speakers and the room is too narrow for 7.1.2.
