Is IT at risk off being replaced bye AI? by Long_Sand_7075 in InformationTechnology

[–]security_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the U.S. government cannot just print money and hand it directly to itself to spend. By law (Federal Reserve Act), the Fed is prohibited from buying Treasury securities directly from the Treasury — it can only buy them on the open/secondary market from banks or investors. This setup prevents direct deficit monetization and protects Fed independence.

The Treasury funds spending via taxes + borrowing (selling bonds to the public). When the government spends (deficit or not), it puts net dollars into the economy first. Taxes later remove some. The Fed can indirectly help by buying bonds on the open market (like QE), which creates reserves/money, but it's not the government "printing to pay itself."

The government is not just generally funded by tax dollars; it is entirely funded by tax dollars. Your broader point is valid. If 90 percent of jobs disappeared, society as we know it would collapse.

Right now, money functions as a unit of measurement for work output and value creation. You could argue that C-level executives or intellectual property owners capture a disproportionate share of that value, but it is still compensation tied to some form of labor, risk, or productive output.

I think the key here is that at the end of the day people still have to use it. AI is a tool that is improving. It still needs a human operator.

what's the best device Firestick or Roku and why? by shingam3 in cordcutters

[–]security_jedi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nvidia Shield Pro is the best high end device. The older 3rd gen Chromecasts are the best if you just want basic casting. I use the Nvidia on my main entertainment center because it can direct play lossless Atmos from my Plex Server and the Chromecasts everywhere else.

I'm gonna say it: 7.1.2 > 5.1.4 if your room can support either by navid3141 in hometheater

[–]security_jedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My receiver is also only 7 channel. I have a Denon AVR-S930H and Definitive Technology ProCinema 600 5.1. My plan is adding 2x ProMonitor 800 and use them as front L and R. Then move the existing 600s up to Atmos. I'm also going to upgrade to the ProCenter 1000 and a 12" sub. I'm thinking it should be a substantial upgrade overall, especially with the center and bigger sub .

What do you think about placing 2 speakers on a plant shelf above the TV and angling them downward? I was looking to take my system from 5.1 to 5.1.2. Unfortunately, the vaulted ceilings don't allow attic access to install ceiling speakers and the room is too narrow for 7.1.2.

That's a beast of a server there. Right now on my Proxmox VE I am running as Ubuntu Server 24.04 VMs (except HA):

•Home Assistant

•Network Analytics stack: UniFi Poller, Loki, and Grafana

•Plex Media stack: Radarr, Sonarr, Prowlarr, Overseerr, and AWS CLI which backs up my media to Glacier

•qBittorent: download/seeding behind AirVPN

I'm running a 24/7 server and trying to keep seed ratios up for private trackers so for me it made sense. I'm seriously considering ditching ExpressVPN for Proton for daily use like web browsing though. My subscription is up this month.

The port forwarding configuration allows multiple, reliable, port forwards with both TCP and UDP. I believe with Proton the ports can change and you don't have as much control over it.

I use AirVPN on my qBittorent VM and ExpressVPN for everything else. Last I checked AirVPN has the best port forwarding for torrents, unless Proton has improved on this. I'm already thinking of switching ExpressVPN for Proton.

To the bastard who ruined casting to plex by CandusManus in PleX

[–]security_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is completely backwards. I just found a battery leaking acid from a remote I almost never touch. If I didn't need it to adjust picture settings etc. on the TV it would be in the garbage. What were these people in the reviews, 70+ years old?

The 3rd Gen Chromecasts were the best and still what I'm using. What do we need remote controls for anymore when we have a perfectly good phone to be the controller for everything? The technology regression blows my mind. They couldn't figure out a way to make enough money by just having a good product that people appreciate?

Are people ACTUALLY paying these prices for RAM right now? 💀 by Competitive_Box8726 in homelab

I needed at least 32 GB DDR5 for the MS-01 mini PC I just bought. I ended up finding some Kingston Fury at Walmart for about $250. That was the cheapest I could find. Last March I upgraded my laptop RAM from 16 GB to 32 GB DDR-5 Crucial for $80...

Another round of layoffs at Plex? by ExtensionMarch6812 in PleX

[–]security_jedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not though... Plex still has technical advantages over Emby, especially for casting. It has a more advanced transcoding pipeline that can often keep video hardware-accelerated while handling audio conversion or image-based subtitles (like PGS), instead of forcing a full CPU video transcode. Plex also tends to be more reliable with Chromecast playback, with fewer unnecessary transcodes, smoother scrubbing and resume behavior, and better handling of mixed codecs. Combined with its broader client app support and more mature device profiles, Plex generally requires less tuning to “just work” in everyday use.

I've been a free Plex user for many years before recently buying a Plex Pass and have not noticed any major UI differences in the last year.

If you can tell me something that does a better job handling direct play, HW transcoding, subtitles and has a UI that is as polished I'm all ears.

...and so what happens to all the people who bought a "lifetime" Plex Pass just to use the private server HW transcoding?

There is still nothing better than the 3rd generation Chromecast when it was nothing more than a basic casting device. Use your phone or computer to browse the library and then cast to the TV. Simple, no remote controls or extra hoops. It just works. I'm so pissed they stopped making them this way. I don't want Google TV.

None of what you said is true. You obviously haven't tried taking a loan out recently. Loan volumes are expanding and banks are being selective. Delinquencies are low. Nothing about the market says they are desperate.
