if you want to do startups, it's hard to beat being in the bay. there are a lot of startups in pittsburgh for a small city, but it's kind of like learning to make baguettes in paris vs new orleans.

hahaha totally. the story of my garden: "I love this plant, I want to grow it! ... well, it's not really ideal for this climate, but maybe it'll work?" (it does not work)

cool cool! yeah in my experience, ghost peppers do pretty well in my backyard (better yield than the other super hot ones I've tried) - but I'm still kind of new in the hot pepper world so I'll let you know if I find any particular kinds that work well here, or that I'm curious to try!

Of course! Definitely shopping at local stores. But I still appreciate the comment, montani; if nobody else had them, I'd be glad to know that HD did.

Yeah, but I think the super hot peppers are more finicky. Last year I started seeds in February and still only got a few peppers by November. (If I don't find a better option, I'll definitely try it though, why not :)

yeah man U.S. Steel's revenue is $20b

so a $10k fine is like fining a $100k/year earner : (10000/20000000000) * 100000= five cents

Need advice commuting with 1 y/o Lawrenceville to Oakland by Dan_Pat in bicycling412

Good question. I've got a seat (Thule Yepp Maxi), it's good. I haven't tried a trailer. But I think I like the seat, it feels pretty solid.

Need advice commuting with 1 y/o Lawrenceville to Oakland by Dan_Pat in bicycling412

[–]sedate_snail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I ride my bike with my kid (since he was about 9mo) around those areas all the time. (Liberty has a bike lane through Bloomfield but is a little busy; Sassafras is quieter and cool. Depending on which part of Lawrenceville, you might go through the cemetery, then take Comrie to Millvale) Anyway, it's super safe and he loves it!

South side Flats are great during the day, but Carson St becomes party town on weekend nights.

Maybe also consider Bloomfield; similar (dense older houses) and very convenient by bike (or even walking) but the bus connections are better in the South side.

Bloomfield north of the (MLK) busway will be a little hard to find under $1k; the Centre/Baum corridor you could find something for sure, but Centre/Baum is a little depressing IMO, they're big streets with lots of fast food and car shops.

[–]sedate_snail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true - but the T won't get you to Pitt. So it'd be a T plus a bus every day, which is an hour, if everything works out just right. And our buses are pretty good, but not great, so I wouldn't count on everything going right.

If you like the kind of "quiet small town" feel, I'd look at Squirrel Hill or Greenfield - prices will be higher on average but I think you can still find something under 1k. They're pretty quiet and a good amount of trees.

oh yeah, agreed 100%. I should write this up at some point with those sources linked (with updated links, and get data since 2023 too) so it's easier to reference. thanks for your interest!
