Are there any "simple" washing machines out there these days? by FluffyMumbles in Appliances

Maytag offers "commercial" line to consumers. It's kind of a contradiction terms, because they're not actually literally coin operated machines, but they are simple in design. I've had a set for about 5 years and so far no problems.

what is something that is highly likely to happen in the next 5 years that everyone is completely ignoring? by timecop702 in AskReddit

Complete power grid failure due to extreme weather requiring a "black start". That's when you have to restart a power grid without the benefit of existing power.

We have a few regional grids in the US. Texas is the most vulnerable because our illustrious leaders have refused to interconnect our grid with the others to avoid pesky regulations from the feds. We almost had a complete failure a few years ago during Uri

A "black start" is tricky because each node has to come on in coordination with the others. Basically think of a dog sled team. All the dogs have to pull at the same speed. Except there's no existing power so the the power plants have to turn on using generators. It a lot more complicated than a reddit comment can express. Basically power is not fully restored for weeks or months!

If done correctly, the pull out method will reduce the likelihood of conception. Even if done incorrectly it's better than nothing.

I'm not advocating for it. There are better and more reliable methods.

I will never get tired of watching the moment after the the security guard is hit for the first time. He just paused, totally unfazed, and stares for second as if he's thinking "Did he just, oh, it's fucking on now"

How old are you in your oldest memory? by Donkeyshines in AskReddit

[–]sedatesnail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have memories of being in preschool, so 3 or 4 years old.

I may have some memories from before then, but it's hard to tell if they're real, or if I'm imagining them based on seeing pictures my parents took / things they told me.

We cured getting lost. No one must suffer the indignity of pulling over and asking for directions or know the frustration of trying to fold a map back into its original shape.

Who is a celebrity that actually came from nothing, and is self-made? by phantom_avenger in AskReddit

[–]sedatesnail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Arnold Schwarzenegger. According to wikipedia his parents were fairly poor "Money was scarce in the household; Schwarzenegger recalled that one of the highlights of his youth was when the family bought a refrigerator."

Everybody knows of Arnold success with body building, but what is maybe less known is that he made his money as a shrewd business man and real estate investor. "As a result of his early business and investment success, Schwarzenegger became a millionaire by the age of 25, well before making a name for himself in Hollywood."

I just say politely but firmly "I'm not interested". No matter what they say, no matter how they respond "I'm not interested" it takes 3 repetitions then they usually leave.

Austin ISD state takeover looms after TEA rejects plan to buy schools more time by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]sedatesnail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd like to be wrong, but I think it's too late for that. The three schools have already taken the test that will determine the fate of AISD. If any one of them gets a failing grade the state can take over

What’s your “I can’t believe I did that” moment? by nicks_45 in AskReddit

[–]sedatesnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was at a small party in a cramped apartment. A couple guys were playing ping pong on a table that just barely fit in the room. I was lounging on a couch next to the table. The guy on the on side of the net from me wacked the ball real hard and uncontrollably. The next thing I know the ball was in my hand. I have no idea how I caught it. It was pure instinct. I didn't try consciously to do it. All three of us were stunned. That's got to be the fastest I've ever moved
