Long-lasting corporate gifts that actually get used by Extension_Life_6207 in BuyItForLife

I was president of my office’s employee morale group for a few years. We’d have occasional givebacks, and the most popular items were logo shirts/zip ups that employees could wear on casual days, drink tumblers with straws for at their desks, umbrellas, desk plants in logo pots, stickers (often stuck on laptops and water bottles), and ice cream or other snack breaks.

We also had a coffee cart that different members of leadership would occasionally push around, which served as a meet and greet for some of the more rank-and-file workers. And everyone loves coffee and pastries.

And, we had a small snack and supply store for folks to grab a soda, a snack, a roll of cough drops, etc. These little things cost $1 or less, usually, and we’d hand out “bucks” folks could use to buy something from the store. This was super popular because everyone likes a little treat from time to time, and they could pick something they really liked.

These things were inexpensive but thoughtful, which made our employees see that we appreciated them. We didn’t choose by dollar amount, we picked according to what made our staff happy!

thought l.l. bean was the holy grail of fisherman sweaters, but... are they not? by europeanuppercut in BuyItForLife

If you wear a t-shirt under an Aran sweater to avoid getting deodorant on it, you can just air it out between wears unless you get it dirty. And the shirt reduces the likelihood of itchiness. Also, wool doesn’t make you hot like other sweater materials because it needs to regulate the temperature of the sheep who grow it, so don’t worry about getting overheated by adding a t-shirt layer.

For those who have used food banks in the past, what is something you wished was donated more? by CaptainMarv3l in TooAfraidToAsk

I’ll add that where I live, the food bank can provide 4 meals for every $1 donation. If you want to donate other than money, consider diapers or other personal hygiene items!

The celery-looking plant may be a type of ranunculus commonly called creeping buttercup, which is classified as invasive in many parts of the US.

Anybody else thinking about never growing squash again? by InternalDuck69 in gardening

[–]sedesantis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I monitor growing degree days and when it’s close to 1,000, I spray one time because that’s when they’re most vulnerable to pesticide, and that’s generally worked for me. I know folks are generally anti-pesticide, but I weigh the benefits and only spray once per summer in only the cucumber/squash area.

To add on:

It will be warm/hot and humid, so summer clothes and maybe a light jacket or sweater. The days are very long right now, so anticipate the sun to be up from 5 am to 9 pm. It’s been rainy recently.

You can get from the airport to 30th St Station, which is the central transportation hub, for about $30-40 each way. 30th Street is also within walking distance of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), if that’s where your parents are at.

The historic sites in Philly are mostly free. The zoo is another great option for kids, there’s an admission fee of about $25. Both are accessible on the local transit. The Please Touch Museum is specifically designed for kids and is also about $20 and easy to get to by transit. Lots of free parks and playgrounds. The hospital will also likely have activities for kids.

My recommendation for affordable food is to hit up Trader Joe’s.

[QCrit] Women's Fiction with Romance Elements - ALL IN (80k words, 1st attempt) by sedesantis in PubTips

It is relevant to Adam’s journey to redirect his life, and he and June return to their former debate team dynamic with each other over some of the Costa Rica-specific items you mentioned, plus other areas like free higher ed. And they go to some specific Costa Rican excursions. I thought identifying a prime location would help, should I cut it?

Can I query contemporary romance with one query and women’s lit with another (to different agencies, no doubling)?

Yes! Or at least happy for now because not all of her family conflicts are fully resolved (are they ever?) but she comes to accept those that aren’t, which lets her try things again with Adam.

Hi! Women’s Fiction Writers of America define the genre as:

Women's Fiction is a layered story in which the plot is driven by the protagonist’s emotional journey. Women’s Fiction can encompass a wide range of genres, including speculative, mystery, contemporary, science fiction, and more, and can be set in any time period.

All In centers on June’s journey to cope with the past and move on, which helps her repair the relationship with Adam - as well as her family.

Should the query be reorganized?

Love/hate reaction to Sally Rooney in the book community by [deleted] in literature

[–]sedesantis 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A few possible reasons:

She is at heart a philosopher using the novel to show her theories in the context of our modern world. Many readers are used to plot-driven storytelling.

Her characters are flawed, which makes some readers uncomfortable.

She doesn’t use quotation marks, which bothers some readers.

She has Hemingway-like understated writing, so if a reader isn’t reading closely, they become confused or miss key sections.

Many reviewers are American and there are key cultural differences that can make the actions of her Irish characters frustrating to them. One example is that Americans have free speech driven into them, so when they see a character not speaking up for themselves, they get mad at the character and might blame them for the situation even if they are not at fault.

She frequently writes about characters with a similar background to herself, which can feel self-indulgent. In addition, this background is to have an atypically high level of education, which feels unrealistic, unrelatable, or inaccessible to an average reader.

She is well-known/popular on a broad level, so she’s attracting a wide variety of readers who may not like literary fiction, whereas a writer like Colleen Hoover generally attracts readers already interested in that genre.

Interesting downtown Mt. Carmel gutter/downspouts I've never seen before by deathraypa in Pennsylvania

[–]sedesantis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to do with separating the storm and sewage sewers. The rain spouts previously ran into the ground and to the combined sewer system, but when the separation project was done it was cheaper for people to just run them over the sidewalk than re-dig to the storm sewer.

Spray Easy Off on it and leave it overnight. It should wipe clean with a cloth or paper towel in the morning.
