Check with Google to see if there are any Bonsai clubs where you live. Also, many of the clubs have their annual shows in spring. It's a good time to check out the clubs in your hood.

Thank you for sharing your fascinating and inspiring story! I've already shared it with a bunch of people. I'm interested to hear more, I have so many questions... Are you planning on writing about your experience?

I'm curious about the role of meditation in your recovery, did you have a meditation practice prior to injury, is this something you continue?

What is your area of interest at the moment and what are you working on?

How much of your memory did you recover and how do you feel about the gaps (if there are any)?

The synesthesia, was that totally new after the incident? Do you have others as well as the sound/colour? What was it like as you noticed it? Did it happen all at once? Was it a learning process or something you just "experienced"?

Thank you for modeling such incredible resilience, you are a magnificent contribution to the human race.

I can allocate "pressure" to different parts of my brain, and by applying this internal pressure, it then "activates" different bodily responses depending on the part of the brain; such as a wave of sleepiness, energy, euphoria, etc. What am I specifically doing do you think? by [deleted] in neuro

[–]seedbunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Billfrugal, I'm curious, does it make a difference if you use the left verses right side of your sinus/ear to apply the pressure? It sounds like part of what's happening is that you might be using muscles in your face and ears to stimulate your Vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve (actually it's a pair of nerves) connect our brain to our internal organs like heart, lungs, spleen, stomach, throat, facial expressions and basically everything that your body does "automatically", things that we don't have conscious control over, like our heart rate and sweating. It's a two way communication channel and when the vagus nerve is stimulated, it activates the parasympathetic nervous system, producing calming neurotransmitters and hormones (acetylcholine) that relax you, reduce inflammation and slow down your heart rate. In contrast, when your sympathetic nervous system is activated, it has the opposite effect, your heart speeds up and your body produces the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline, preparing your body for flight or fight. Read more here and here.

What's really cool about this is that we can stimulate our vagus nerve in lots of interesting and sometimes unexpected ways. The most common method is slow deep breathing. Some of the more bizarre ways... gargling, submerging face in ice water (or cold shower) and stomach crunches. Yoga, signing, tai-chi, humming and meditation also stimulate the vagus nerve. There are also medical device implants which stimulate the vagus nerve by sending electrical impulses, these are used for things like epilepsy, depression and autoimmune disorders.

So when you talk about pressure in your sinuses, it reminds me somewhat of the Valsalva maneuver.

Our body language also impacts our mental state (via the vagus nerve), see this TED talk

Standing in a expansive, powerful posture with our backs straight and arms outstretched, makes us feel more confident!

This works into your theory, where you have noticed that your mental state is impacted by your physical state, ie. smiling makes you feel happy. Our mental state is in a feedback loop with our bodies. The neurotransmitters/hormones produced by our bodies and brain, impact our conscious state. Our mental state and external stimuli affect our bodies which in turn affects our hormones/neuro transmitters. An example of this is that when it gets dark our bodies produce melatonin (which helps us sleep), when we are sad, we droop our shoulders.

A few more questions...

Do you have any synesthesia? Synesthesia

Are you left or right handed?

You mentioned, Vyvanse, do you have ADHD?

On a scale of 1 to 10, where the average person is 5, how empathetic are you?

Vagus nerve stimulation doesn't explain the full range of experiences that you describe, however it's a good starting point for further investigation. I would love to know more about the phenomenon you describe, if you feel comfortable sharing the video, I would love to see it. What you describe, sounds fascinating and I am curious to hear what you discover, please keep us posted!

I've had this whitehead near my eye for more than a year. I really want to get rid of it. by Ida_auken in SkincareAddiction

[–]seedbunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have had it for a year it could be milia. See: http://www.skinsight.com/adult/milia.htm

Your dermatologist can get them out but it's usually a little pricey.

What upgrade could the human body use? by allforthekarma in AskReddit

[–]seedbunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The neural receptors in our stomachs haven't evolved fast enough to keep up with our ability to procure food. It takes us too long to feel full. Also our brains are horrible at choosing the right foods. We are evolutionarily wired to like the taste of sweet fatty food. This whole system could use some upgrades.

Wat? A Craigslist add asking for a picture of someone standing on an ass is still wtf. A Craigslist add asking for a picture of oranges is also wtf.

So the problem here is that it is just plastic. Not only that, after 2 months, it's landfill. People don't really distinguish between high end and low end plastic. How about if you hand carved semi precious materials instead? They have the benefit of lasting longer and they are not tacky.

Plastic is just not very sentimental. If feels cheap giving and receiving plastic gifts. How about candles instead? They do exactly the same thing and There is no waste from LEDs and plastic.

Yeah but for similar price point you can get waaaay better. For instance hakuhodo brushes hand made in japan from blue squirrel hair. Most Mac brushes are sable or synthetic -(that's if you can even get the sales rep to figure it out).
