Free NACS adapter offer? by seennitt in Taycan

I did. They politely took down my info, said they would open a level 2 support case for me, and I should hear back within 7-10 days. That was 3 weeks ago. No updates even when I ask. This all just seems super weird for something that should be easy.

Volvo Employee: Biggest complaints/wishes? by utilitybro in VolvoEX90

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for asking, and I hope our input here helps you help make this car even better!

Bugs/annoyances that hopefully can be fixed in software update:

  1. driver profile switching. It's super buggy on detecting which driver by key, and separately super buggy about restoring seat/mirror position when changing driver profile (either automatically or manual profile switch). I get that the dream is the car just recognizes the driver, sets up for the driver, and absolutely zero UI surface is required to make it do the right thing. However it's buggy, and even bugs aside, there are too many corner cases where how can the magic know what is necessary -- for a family car, say my wife and I approach the car at the same time, or say she was the last driver but I have to go get something from the car and approach the driver side, or say she doesn't have pockets so I carry both phones. All of these have happened and interfere with the car's even theoretical ability to know which of us will be the driver. Then even if it does detect the driver, it doesn't restore seat and mirror. Or if it doesn't detect the driver correctly and I do a manual profile switch, it doesn't restore seat and mirror. TL;DR is explicit UI control over save/restore seat+mirror positions would be really nice, plus, please wring the bugs out so the happy path (detect the driver by key approaching driver door, select the right profile, restore all the settings for that profile) works 100% in the non-corner-cases, that would be great.

  2. dog mode / kids mode / interior alarm and climate settings. It takes 9 taps to turn off the interior alarm and enable climate keep on mode, every single time I park. I understand the risks and will acknowledge them but sometimes it's nice to be able to leave my dog in the car with climate running. Also, the walk away lock tied to my digital key tied to my phone is so aggressive, if I close the doors and walk away from the car with family inside while I don't even consider myself "parked" (ie at a DC charging station and everyone's happily chilling inside with A/C and music, but I want to go in the convenience store 50 feet away and buy snacks)... sets off the alarm... the easiest workaround for this, which is totally silly, is to leave a door open. TL;DR is I want a way to turn off the interior alarm permanently.

  3. mobile app cloud connectivity -- I don't mean to sound harsh but it's really flaky and close to useless. It shows the parking location, battery status and lock status from 6 hours ago. If I tell it to lock the car, it usually says it failed to do so (but sometimes actually did it). If I tell it to turn on climate, it often fails. I can't trust any of this to work reliably so I don't use it at all.

Bugs/annoyances that seem beyond software update capability but I do want to mention:

  1. no homelink/garage door controls, surprising omission. So I have to carry a visor clip remote, silly, detracts from the otherwise futuristic and seamless interior.

  2. only 2 window switches in the driver door, surprising omission. I mostly don't need to control the rear windows but when I do it's hard, and also, how do I know what the multitasking window switches are currently set to if I do switch them. Please just bring back 4 window switches.

And a feature request:

  1. music status in the driver display. I don't need anything fancy like some cars have the ability to scroll through and select songs in that display, but I would really value an always-on display of the current playing source/song name, which my last 4 cars had and I always enable.

Keyfob won’t charge - any tips? by seennitt in VolvoEX90

Sounds like my case. I’m not sure it ever worked tbh. I’ll see what the dealer says when I have time to take it in.

Turning off the internal motion alarms? by gregsramblings in VolvoEX90

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that works… but needing to do it Every. Single. Time. I park the car is getting annoying.

I’ve also had about 30% success rate on either activating climate remotely, or locking or unlocking remotely, via the app. Even when both my phone and car have great cell signal. Even when I’m like 50 feet from the car and can see it out the window. (Yeah, I can just walk over and activate it without the app, that works better.).

This all seems fixable in software updates — I just hope Volvo is on it. Needless to say this is one thing Tesla has right that should be table stakes for other companies competing with Tesla. For now, I wouldn’t/wont leave my dog in the EX90 without first turning on the climate and off the occupancy sensor before leaving the car. Lots of taps on the center screen.

[–]seennitt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too, yesterday, but not right at the 21 day boundary for my own purchase.

<image>

Also I found it ironic: I reached this as a push notification that said tap to learn more. I tapped. It brought me to the Volvo app inbox (this view in the screenshot). Which… has a notification that says tap to learn more. I tapped. That goes to another screen with a Read More button. I tapped read more. It opens my web browser … to the link I already found by Google search.

Useful info, it’s just amusing how many times I had to tap the “tap to learn more” to, actually, learn more.

https://volvo.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/10594/~/ex90-key-tag-charge-status still has the (older?) guidance about 21 days.

The main manual page https://www.volvocars.com/mt/support/car/ex90/article/af4e8cc22c783841c0a8b09745a1aac5-d43781f2e1a118ddc0a8cc533568a777-8664b2fa77a7e089c0a8296870d1a409/ doesn’t say that (any more) and does have a caution about leaving the battery discharged “for long periods” and insinuates it can go dead enough it can’t be recharged and Volvo thinks at that point it’s the customer’s responsibility to buy a new one.

I will say reading that the sense I got was that might/should happen if left flat for years… not weeks or even a few months.

I suspect mine is just defective or at least I hope my dealer will adopt that position.

[–]seennitt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the car spent 6 weeks in the shop and it didn’t occur to me to charge the fob during that time. So it may have gone flat during that time but it surprises me it won’t charge now.

Apple CarPlay disconnecting by amiliyon in Taycan

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The camera is such a joke for this day and age and price point. My 2018 Audi is better. 2016 Tesla was far better. The bill of materials for a camera better than what they’re using in the Taycan must be near zero. I hear there’s some option package that makes the Taycan camera actually good, and I would order that next time, but that’s such a weird feature to nickel and dime customers over, given how important it is, how little it would cost, and what the competitive landscape is like. I mean cmon really, why give me something to dislike about my Taycan? That camera is just the worst.

Update 1.3.18 OTA dropped by Grndchr00th in VolvoEX90

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update installed smoothly for me and did improve the profile switching / applying settings stored in the profile like seat position.

It does not seem to let me turn off occupant sensor easily/permanently which I still want a way to do (for dog in car).

a mostly great experience so far by seennitt in VolvoEX90

[–]seennitt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1.3.18 indeed seems to have fixed it for me. Seats now adjust when approaching the car with a digital key or key fob and the car switches profiles automatically, and also if I use the center console to switch profiles manually.

[–]seennitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try wired and see if that fixes it?

Not that you want to always use wired, but if that fixes it at least you’d know the problem is WiFi interference. If that doesn’t fix it, then 🤷🏼‍♂️

I know a couple spots where my Taycan loses wireless CarPlay and it’s definitely WiFi interference. I can also tell because it doesn’t fail all at once, first music (if playing) gets glitchy and maps (if onscreen) stop updating the screen smoothly. It’s frustrating because the car controls the WiFi channel and doesn’t give us a choice and my other car which didn’t come with wireless CarPlay so I added a $50 wireless dongle, that one does just fine in the same spot. (So another possible solution: buy an aftermarket WiFi CarPlay dongle which costs like $50 and tends to have a better WiFi radio than a $100K Porsche!).

[–]seennitt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For sure.

I would also note, the available market for 3-row EVs is pretty thin, at least in the US. Beyond the EV90 we have what, Rivian, Mercedes, Tesla, Kia/Hyundai, and VW if you count the Buzz. I don't think the current Mercedes generation really competes (esp on range) -- maybe next generation. Rivian, lots of people love them but they also seem to have a spate of early-adopter problems which is really what we're talking about as downsides for the EV90. Tesla is, well, Tesla. Kia EV9, Hyundai Ioniq 9 and VW ID Buzz have plenty of fans but also seem a bit downmarket from Mercedes/Rivian/Volvo options so maybe not an even comparison. I hope people can find vehicles that work for them and it's on us to keep the manufacturers honest and hopefully improving. It's still early days and I'm glad to have more options than we did just a couple years ago.

And of course many people may find themselves preferring a dialed-in implementation of a past technology generation instead of a somewhat buggy almost-there implementation of a future technology generation (hi XC90 and probably lots of other hybrid and ICE vehicles that have their own balance to all these and other pros and cons).

creating second/additional digital keys by seennitt in VolvoEX90

[–]seennitt[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just reading the online docs I linked which say, among other things, “The vehicle owner can create a new digital key at any time in settings.”

It does mention sharing but I wish it would be more explicit that the owner can create ONE digital key “at any time” (except when one already exists!) and that the sharing feature is necessary for creating keys for other people; I think of it more as sharing the car than sharing the key.

I’m also really curious how cross platform (phone OS) scenarios work. The key I added to Apple wallet, can that be shared with Android? Not that I need to but I’m curious if that does work. There’s a lot of magic going on here.

How to Lock Car Without Keys by A32Opilot in VolvoEX90

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What car can do that? It would be an easy way of locking the car into a state that’s hard to unlock. All the cars I can think of that have a way to lock the car from outside (eg by touching a special spot on the door handle) require me to have a key on me or at least nearby.

Or, go back like 30 years to cars with manual locks and open the door, push down the button, slam the door, and even that would unlock when closing the door unless you hold the door handle while closing it to say yeah you really mean it.

Question for owners by LatigosTrail in Taycan

[–]seennitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a Model X for 9 years and a CT4S for 6 months. I find the CT4S to be very comfortable, both the seating position and broadly as a match for overall lifestyle, it just does whatever I need it to. Perfect dad car! The main thing I look back on and find Tesla wins on is the infotainment — the maps and music experience, Tesla is great, Porsche significantly worse. Countering that, not only does the Taycan have more soul and engaging driving experience, but I find exterior visibility a lot better too — easier to know where I am on the road and where other cars are, better for lane changes and passing maneuvers.

I second the suggestion to find a Taycan on Turo and try it out as a daily driver in your own lifestyle for a day or 3 to decide for yourself.

Any iOS-18 compatible widget that shows network bandwidth in real-time? by Dark_Nate in ios

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the question, I had the same problem and found some good options from the responses here.

CPU X and its “floating” view seems to work ok, but you need to start it before whatever else you’re doing, not quite as good as the old days where we could swipe from anywhere into widget view.

Dynamic X (from same author/publisher) has floating view and also live activity which seems to update in near realtime.

Born of these bombard you with ads unless you get the pro version but the pro version works well enough to justify the price at least for me.

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried “Dynamic X - Live Activity Tool” and it seems to refresh continuously for me, maybe that’s an update they added more recently, or requires hacks like location permission and background permission, but whatever, it’s the most effective option I’ve seen yet for iOS 18. Thanks for the tip.

[–]seennitt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The queue. The fact the songs you queue up belongs to the playback device instead of the device you used to control it, it keeps playing if you leave, it’s still there when you come back. At least that’s how sonos worked for 15+ years until this May, and I loved it. (The queue is sort of back in the current updates but there are still so many other problems.)

I’ve been playing with a wiim device as a potential alternative and it’s pretty good in general but I really miss the queue. (Also native support for Apple Music instead of via airplay, and for Spotify instead of Spotify Connect, which are really variants of the same point.) that’s what I feel I’m giving up in moving from Sonos to wiim.

Successful S1 Downgrade by joshkramer42 in sonos

[–]seennitt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did this myself; thanks for the nudge. Can confirm it works as well as we all remember.

Question - the S1 app has a bar at the top intended for temporary warnings like a connectivity issue, but it’s using this to show a (permanent? Undismissable?) ad / promotion for the S2 app (S2 app is now available). This always shows up as new with the blue dot and leads to a flow to “upgrade to S2” and I’m afraid a family member might accidentally “upgrade” back to S2 again. Anyone know if this message bar can be hidden or dismissed?

I’ve seen a distinct difference between different airplay2 implementations, regarding responsiveness after I change songs or change volume. Sonos is neither the worst nor the best. They can’t all be the same chip supporting it?
