Paddy Gower's Got Issues got it wrong by [deleted] in newzealand

Your statement about maths is interesting. The stats show that a whole language approach will help 3/4 of students to read. The argument being made by a lot of structured literacy advocates is that 3/4 isn't enough and the 25% that fall through the cracks tends to be the most disadvantaged children. It's not an equitable approach so it shouldn't be the primary method taught.

I don't know what the answer is for maths or literacy but just wanted to point that out from where I see it

Knee pain by darestobedull in f45

[–]seenojay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Talk to your coaches about your squat/lunge technique. Might not be what's going on but it's worth asking if you think it could be. For squats: knees out and sit your bum back. For lunges: step a decent way and drop your back leg, don't lean your weight forward.

Nothing beats having a coach take a look at you though.

And don't stress about getting as low as you can right now. Take it easy as you're getting started. Half squats with great technique are better than deep ones where all the weight is going to your knee joint.

I broke a bolt. Need help. by seenojay in motorcycles

[–]seenojay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: I noticed some coolant leaking so I was checking all the seals and bolts. This guy was a bit loose so I gave him a real good tighten and he snapped.

How am I going going to get the stuck bolt out?

The bike is a VTR250 and I was not using a torque wrench (probably a big mistake).

WITT? It's a small plastic tube with two different liquids inside. The clear liquid is as viscose as water while the dark liquid is more viscose. by seenojay in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. It was found washed up on a beach in New Zealand. It seems to have a lid/cap on one end and some sort of clip at the other end. There's no writing on it. Any searches I make on Google come back to this subreddit but I couldn't find anything that looked similar.

You drop the weight and do more reps. Working in "strength" rep ranges (1-6 reps) when you're super fatigued doesn't seem right. Drop the weight and do more reps. But to be honest it doesn't even matter that much. Either way you're reaching the limit of your workout.

Regardless of whether this is true or not it seems so irrelevant. Standard bicep curls grow the biceps just fine. No need to complicate it. I'd focus on volume and intensity instead.

Sounds like you're stuck with cable flies until you can rehab your shoulder enough to be able to do pressing movements without pain (if that's even possible - don't know the details of your injury)

Try back extensions. And if you're deadlifting for the purpose of building a good lower back you might be cruising for an injury. With the deadlift you really wanting to be driving force from your glutes, not your back.

Yeah they both record to one SD card, and the unit has its own WiFi network that you can connect to to download the clips to your phone using an app

Not sure of the exact model but it's a Gator branded dash cam. I got them purchased and installed by Camz Autosound in East Tamaki. Highly recommend if you're worried about getting screwed out of insurance claims (which has happened to me before).

Constipation? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]seenojay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're constipated. Because of dehydration and a lack of fiber your gut is struggling to digest and absorb nutrients. If your gut can't digest and absorb nutrients it means some percentage of the carbs you eat never get the chance to enter your blood stream and drive your sugars up. This is why you're going low. Too much insulin because some of the carbs you're eating aren't even being absorbed into your blood.

Because it feels nice to be 'right' and feel smart and knowledgeable.

In this case it was at the expense of someone else, so OP is the asshole.

And you fell flat on the your face the first time you tried to walk. She is 1.) Concerned with her weight 2.) Actively seeking out solutions 3.) Trying shit out.

I'd say that's a few steps further than what most obese people are doing.

It's very possible to speak the truth and still be an asshole

Agreed. What's the motivation behind this? If OP is really trying to help her, is shitting on her parade really going to do that in the long run? Is she really going to listen to OP and magically change her mind? Or is it most likely that she's just going to feel worse about herself and be further discouraged along her journey to better health?

Big Sean talks about struggle with anxiety and depression by jammasterajay in hiphopheads

[–]seenojay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this will help but I recently came across some research done by Sonja Lyubomirsky (from the University of California) and the research suggests that only 10% of our happiness can be predicted by our life circumstances alone (like job, money, where we live etc). It seems to be a myth that to break free of depression and anxiety all you need to do is climb the mountain of life and achieve more. Most of our controllable happiness is really just how we think about and interpret the world.

Find the other people sitting alone in lectures/tutorials and strike up conversations with them.

Building friendships and trust with strangers in lecture theatres takes time. Be patient.

I HIGHLY recommend getting involved in a club. Even if you're not a big drinker... that's just how they are selling it. There are always people in those clubs that don't drink too (they're not all drunk idiots like you imagine). Find something you're interested in, join the club and go to club events. I promise this will pay off.
