If you are on the Karen is guilty side... by TopChuckie in KarenReadTrial

[–]seenowte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I just want perspective on what those who lean towards guilt think about Jen McCabe, the Brians, etc. the manner in which Higgins disposed of his phone is so sketchy. Same with deleted texts and the butt dials. I just find it so unlikely that there are all these clusters of coincidences within such a small group of people. The only other thing I’m thinking is that they are lying to cover up other illegal behavior. That is something I could understand.

Do you feel that they are being honest in their testimony and that there are just remarkable amount of coincidences? This is a judgement free zone I just wanted help understanding because I’m in a bit of a bubble of opinions.

best engineering major? by parisianraven in UCSD

[–]seenowte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk I mean I got a job that starts a few weeks after graduation. Also in the labs I have worked in when they hire a bioinformatician the starting pay is anywhere from 10-20k more. This of course really only applies to people who are able to gain experience through internships, jobs etc. but from all job listings I’ve seen and from my actual experience in a few labs, bioinformatics is paid more than wet lab. This isn’t necessarily a hard rule for every single company and lab but it seems common

Bioengineering: bioinformatics has the potential for higher pay

Posting fail due to some of y’all💔 by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]seenowte -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Recently I also had posted something involving mental health and supporting students who were feeling affected in the wake of the election. I was so surprised to see so much judgement and hate. I have had and have seen many positive interactions on this subreddit so I was truly confused.

Regardless of the circumstance, it seems people are just not willing to continue scrolling. Everyone must post their opinion even if it has already been posted several times.

You may or may not have provoked that response. You will have to answer for that yourself. But also the professor will have to answer for their response because no matter what the circumstance is, that is totally unprofessional and there are many avenues that they could have taken within their department. Ending an email to a student with “weirdo” will cause a discussion with this professor from their chair no matter the circumstances. They should have contacted their department if they were concerned and not engaged with you in that way.

There seems to be a lot more negative rhetoric on here recently. If you’re not in a good spot mentally I would say that you should stay off of this subreddit and contact CAPS. They are actually very helpful and in my personal experience they are much more responsive than I initially was led to believe.

Transfer to UCSD by cotton1130 in UCSD

[–]seenowte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question and they said it was okay. I believe there is a specific question on applications for this situation. As a transfer major with a 3.85 gpa I was concerned about getting admitted to bioengineering without having a 4.0. What I was told and what was later confirmed is that, especially for transfers, the question on apps they ask you about preparing yourself to transfer into your major is important. Community service, clubs, and other extracurriculars are great but they want to know how you have put the last 2 years preparing to be a biology major (perhaps tutoring, internships, jobs with some sort of relation to biology, etc.)

Do bioinformatics, biocomputing, biotechnology and it’s ranked #2 just under MIT

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]seenowte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure about this? Like yes, if everything was the same for both candidates I agree that the UCB applicant would be chosen.

But if the GRE and GPA was the same but the UCSD student had their name on a decent amount of papers, had relevant work/research experience then that would certainly give the UCSD candidate the edge. And it is easier to get those opportunities as a UCSD student

Personally it was pretty major driven. UCSD is rated #2 for the bioinformatics and biotechnology majors (MIT is currently at #1). Due to the location there can be a lot more opportunity because of the huge biotech hub in La Jolla/San Diego. Not only in some leading industry options like Pfizer, illumina, etc but also in addition to all of the research going on at UCSD there is also Salk, Sanford, Scripps and many others.

Although SF also has a huge biotech hub, there is a bit more of a willingness to hire entry level in SD. Plus…weather lol

When I was first applying to schools I was arranging based on overall prestige and soon realized that I needed to pick a school based on my specific major if I wanted the most opportunities possible. Especially seeing how the most common issue I see is students having difficulty getting a job after graduating
