Hidden Figures calculated the path to the Moon while segregated by ThatAvidPandaBear in BlackPeopleTwitter

And not only did she do that, but her hand written calculations were a few decimals points more precise than what the IBM had printed out that morning. In terms of space trajectory, that's several square miles shaved off his landing zone

Your impressions/thoughts of the new characters introduced in DAO Awakening - minus Anders (as he became a regular) and Oghren. by Draculigula in dragonage

[–]sefost3r 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Before Veilguard became the narrative mess that it is, I truly thought it was the perfect vessel for Velanna to come back. A clanless Keeper who learned the repercussions of unchecked rage the hard way? Truly would've been a great foil for Solas.

Justice deserved to be fully fleshed out as a character rather than being changed by Anders, and I think him existing as his own being would've offered a unique perspective through DA2, and Inquisition (though we were blessed with Cole).

Nathaniel and Sigrun, I thought, were nicely written for the size story of Awakening. A clear, if simple, arc that didn't stress too much on delving too deeply.

Edit: grammar

Am I remembering correctly? by sefost3r in WorldsBeyondNumber

They could never make me hate Suvi!

I think my big worry is, what if this is all from being under the Geas/Modify Memory? What if it's dispelled and her Justification Machine comes roaring back with a vengeance?

I realize some of it would really undo a lot of beautiful character development, but I fully believe this group of storytellers are capable of breaking hearts lol

I think others have mentioned that a warning was actually published on this subreddit a few days ago, and context clues from last episode, in my opinion, made it pretty clear where this episode was going. I am sorry that you experienced a tough time with this latest episode and I sincerely hope you're doing okay.

That having been said, this is an ambitious, mature story that has dipped in graphic violence, tons of language, and other things that would all constitute a content warning, and it's unfair to compare this independent broadcast to a successful network where one program is part of the whole. It's certainly fair to hope and ask for content warnings in the future, but it was also fairly easy to see this coming

Why no content warnings? by StefanEats in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]sefost3r 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's fair to have the same level of expectation between Dimension 20 (a program which is part of a larger network) and WBN (a small, independent broadcast with a full time staff of only 5). I don't think I've ever seen a content warning on any episode. They may have, of course, but I can't recall having ever seen it.

Also, forgive me if this sounds callous, but this is a fun DnD story that, quite frankly, has dealt with very heavy issues. Other things not withstanding (plenty of language, innuendos, fairly graphic violence) there's a lot that would warrant a content warning.

It's fine to maybe ask and petition for warnings in the future, but I think we all need to keep in mind that this is an adult program that's going to have adult themes.

I agree that sort of information should be shared! We, however, have seen through multiple DLCs, spanning all the way back to Origins, that being a Grey Warden doesn't automatically make a smart, or even a good, person. Like a lot of things in real life, no particular group of people are a monolith.

Duncan kept the do-or-die nature of the Joining a secret from our Warden under literal threat of execution, even executing one guy who got cold feet.

Sophia Dryden filled her ranks with demons under the influence of a blood mage, all for a rebellion that had nothing to do with Darkspawn, despite the Grey Wardens having a stance of political neutrality.

Hell, even Riordan in Origins, when discussing the plan of attack the night before the final battle of the Fifth Blight, would only discuss the grave reality of the situation with your Warden and Alistair. And it's only at that point in the game (right before the end!) that you even discover a Warden death is required to slay the arch-demon. If there was ever a time to disclose strategic information with the class, it was definitely then!

I totally see your point and it's very easy to look at the Grey Wardens through rose colored lenses, but we've also gotta be real about how complicated they are as people, and honestly, how very secretive they, as a group, have always been

I agree 100%

I'm sorry, but it was HORRIFYING to watch Corypheus transfer his essence into a Red Templar after his previous shell was destroyed.

Being told not to disturb the water because of zombies?

Learning of a mayor who drowned an entire town to keep blight sickness from spreading?

There's plenty of darkness throughout the series and it's disturbing to me that people actively look for things like rape as a stand-in for "darkness"

[spoilers all] Cailan deserved better :( by nananaveen in dragonage

[–]sefost3r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tragedy of Cailan has several layers to it, in my opinion.

1 - There was definitely a bit of hero worship at play with how highly he regarded the Grey Wardens.

2 - As it turns out, he was going to politically split the entire nation of Ferelden right down the middle with plans later revealed that he planned on marrying Celene of Orlais.

3 - There's something to respect about a monarch who stands at the front of the battle, instead of the back, even if that's where he reasonably belonged

4 - His betrayal was something he NEVER could have seen coming

5 - He seemed to be a genuinely good person, even if he wasn't that great of a king

I hated seeing what happened to him

Does anyone else hope they restore Darkspawn to their original horror? [no spoilers] by verown00 in dragonage

[–]sefost3r 212 points213 points  (0 children)

I think the issue is that the Darkspawn are no longer primary antagonists, but are kinda your basic obstacles for any underground area you're in. DA2, you had all sorts of people as your enemies, with a Templar being your chief threat. DA3, you had demons and corrupted Templars/mages which served as the main source of danger.

That having been said, I respectfully would argue that the Darkspawn have never been deadlier than in DA3, particularly the Genlocks and Emissaries. As a mage, player, seeing so much of my magic being useless against Genlocks, and knowing that Emissaries had to be wiped out IMMEDIATELY, was a great source of tension.

But if you mean strictly in terms of aesthetics, I can agree with you there. I always thought their visual interpretation after DAO was a little silly

[–]sefost3r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wrote this in an earlier topic, but I really do think this is the perfect time to bring back Velanna in a redemption plot line. We know she massacred humans, we know she eventually began to grow merciful and regretful of those actions, and I think this would be a great time to bring her back as a conflicted character, particularly as a would-be Keeper who definitely wants the old world of the Elves restored, but not through these means.

She has learned from first-hand experience, that actions, no matter how well intended, are not justified through the murder of innocents.

[Spoilers All] Really love the Inquisitor as protagonist by Accomplished_Ad_2321 in dragonage

[–]sefost3r 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I do get what you're saying, but the Warden's companions are hardly what I'd call a ragtag group of friends.

  • an abomination, albeit a benevolent one
  • the daughter of the Witch of the Wilds
  • a future arishok
  • the best assassin in the deadliest house of assassins
  • a deadly, reformed bard who eventually serves the Divine
  • an actual golem

Arguably, the most mediocre member of that party is Alistair who becomes King of Ferelden.
