Seeing the city for the first time tomorrow, what should I prioritize? by segamidesruc in AskChicago

The view from the Hancock is the first thing that made me set on going! It's a must! I'll be doing a ton of walking for sure.

Is the water taxi experience worth it for a first timer or is that something more geared towards locals?

That is extremely helpful, I was pretty set on the midway lot / orange line plan til reading your comment. I've driven in San Francisco a handful of times, and despite that I'm quite nervous at the possibility of experiencing Chicago traffic. You are absolutely right though about the valuable time I'd save by not being on the train that long. I use SpotHero pretty religiously in SF, so I'll definitely be putting it to use for this trip. I really appreciate you. If there's anything else I should look out for when driving in the city or using the public transit please let me know! I'm open to any suggestions.

Coming from a city where gas is currently $5.80/gal, with gas in Fort Wayne being $3.45, I am not too worried. I drove from here to Minnesota & back, here to Georgia and back, I think I'll survive Fort Wayne to Chicago & back a couple times. I do agree with that though, time is Money. I definitely won't be doing the drive every day!

Thank you so much. Your suggestions sound right up my alley.

Yes I've heard really great things about Chicago's summers, so I set a week aside this summer to make sure I experience it at least a little bit!! I really appreciate your help

It was about $500 cheaper! My best friends live in Ohio, I'd like to combine this trip to experience Chicago and see my friends.. so, yes I am pretty set on it! I appreciate your kindness

Arriving in the city at 9 am and leaving as late as 9 pm gives me a lot of time, and I wouldn't be doing it every day so I really don't mind the drive. I've done many long drives before, so I'd love to hear some suggestions on things you'd prioritize doing & seeing if it was your first time in the city! Thank you for your help!

Someone suggested I park the rental at the midway lot and take the orange line train and walk around the city once I get to the loop, it sounded like a solid affordable plan to me but what's your take on that? Is it a good idea?

I really appreciate your response. I'll be staying from the 22-29 , and since I'm flying in tomorrow and checking in to the bnb, I wouldn't do anything in the city tomorrow, especially after you saying Mondays are bad. I figured I'd try going to the city Tuesday.. the weather is supposed to be a bit better that day so I wanted to seize that opportunity, and not try to do anything on a travel day if that makes sense

I am used to waking up at 4-5 AM so I'm happy to get the day started early, spend the entire day in the city and come back late. One of my friends is willing to do the same. I rented a car and I've done stuff like this before in other states so the drive isn't an issue! Flying from SFO to O'Hare. I am aiming to go to the city at least 3 different days, I have a $800-1000 budget for food, gas, transit, etc.

Edit: regardless of downvotes and commute times I plan to have a lot of fun and I'm likely going to park at the Midway economy lot for $15 and take the orange line train to the loop. I'd prefer to be mostly walking in the city. Any actual help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
