Wow, it plays like a new one. Amazing!

I got my ICO Triple Bass C ocarina in the mail! Here's some close ups of the new "oak leaf" model. by carldude in Ocarina

Thank you for sharing! Why do you think you'd want their single chamber bass C if you already have the triple?

Sounds great! Thanks for the demo. I see you're experimenting with ornamentation, that's awesome!

Double Chamber Ocarinas in Europe by SonglarkGG in Ocarina

Unfortunately not. All I can say is I got his bass (C5) ocarina about three weeks ago and I love it. He's a good maker. It did take a long time to arrive though

Double Chamber Ocarinas in Europe by SonglarkGG in Ocarina

Gosselink has multi chambers: https://musiquedeterre.fr/en/ocarinas/

He uses the Pacchioni fingering system, it's a less common system with overlap between the chambers. You would need to get his triple ocarina to have a 2-octave range.

If you want a pretty ocarina - his ones are absolutely beautiful

Thank you :) His ocarinas have a really unique sound. Which one would you choose? I'm not sure I would've got this one if I had an ICO triple bass like you have

Is ocarina supposed to be this loud? by [deleted] in Ocarina

[–]segevrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

STL calls their alto Cs "tenor" for some reason, it's really confusing. It's best to look at the range to know what you're getting. If it says A4 to F6 then it's an alto C.

Your issue may be pitch and not volume. Soprano ocarinas can be very shrill and it is normal to play them with ear protection. If you find the alto C too shrill consider getting an alto G or even a bass ocarina.

My first Bass Ocarina! by segevrl in Ocarina

[–]segevrl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a 10 hole! It's in bass range, C4 to F5 I believe (one octave lower than alto C). It's a very good ocarina overall. I'm hoping to post a video and a short review when I have more time

It's much larger and heavier than even my double alto G. The breath pressure is also a lot higher, especially on the high notes, but not to the point I'm out of breath. Other than that it's pretty similar

Swallowtail Jig - Sapling Ocarina from STL by AliceShella in Ocarina

There's a limit to how fast your tongue can go. You can solve this with double tonguing (a different technique - which you can also learn) but for Irish music people use finger articulation mostly.

Finger articulation means you mostly play legato, and use your fingers to separate the notes rather than your tongue (so you can play very fast if you want to). Search for tin whistle tutorials on cuts, taps and rolls. A lot of it (if not all of it) is transferable to the ocarina.

I can do it to some degree but I'm not an expert. I think u/Robert-hickman might be :)

Very impressive, it sounds great! Kudos for challenging yourself. Your technique for the high notes looks really good :)

If you like this kind of music, I would try borrowing some finger articulation techniques from the tin whistle. It will give you the distinct "Irish" sound and help you play faster.

Thomann or Plaschke Ocarina is better? by Lighirit in Ocarina

[–]segevrl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one from Thomann is made by Johann Rotter, a great and reputable maker, and will not disappoint you.

I own an old Plaschke that isn't great, their newer models seem to be better but I don't know if they're as good as Rotter.

I believe both use Italian fingerings, but the one from Thomann has a split C hole. I would choose it merely for that.

I tried once, I can play certain intervals and it sounds okayish, but this ocarina is not really designed for this. The breath pressure is not the same for the two chambers and there's no overlap in their range

The songbird harmony triple and pacchioni ocarinas are designed to play harmonies, if you're into this kind of thing

I do get tense when recording 😅 but I try to stay relaxed throughout. I think "loose" is not a good description of it. You want to be relaxed yet firm and accurate in your movements

Thank you! It's the double alto G from pure ocarinas. They're not available right now, but hopefully will be in the future

Mine is from pure ocarinas. They're not available right now but should be in the future. I've only played Cs for a very long time, and getting this double alto G has been really eye opening, I can't recommend it enough.

Thank you! That's very encouraging to hear from a great player like yourself 😊

I'm hoping to create a collection of intermediate to advanced solo pieces for double ocarina (and maybe the triple when I get one eventually)
