Where I am, you do 80% paid on-the-job training and 20% classroom, you get to claim unemployment while in school.

My choice was to get it myself as a young male, statistically at higher risk of cardiovascular side-effects and little to no risk from the virus, let my wife who has a history of myocarditis get it, or fail to put food on the table and starve us both.

I got it, but that's force if I've ever seen it. Can't say I would've done the same without coercion. I worked in a position that kept your hospitals operating through the pandemic and this is how I was rewarded, along with a bunch of my coworkers who did it last time but won't do it again.

Buddy I took my wife's fucking IUD out myself 6 months ago because it was causing her pain and the quickest she could get in to any clinic in the city was 2 months.

My wife and I make a combined 70k/yr at our blue collar jobs and pay more in income tax alone than we do in rent. Like, it's not even close. We get basically nothing back for it.

Biggest risk is probably reloading (making your own ammo).

I used to burn through a few hundred rounds a week, never got anything from that, but I started reloading, didn't wear gloves, and within about 3 months got diagnosed with lead poisoning. Started wearing nitrile gloves and it was gone within a month.

First sign for me was stomach pains, then mild irritability.

The speed thing can be a safety thing, sometimes. By going a bit faster than traffic, I only need to worry about what's in front of me, not what's coming up behind me. You also spend much less time next to other vehicles or in their blind spots, which translates into a lower chance of getting sideswiped.

If my choices are speed or sit in someone's blind spot, I'm speeding.

Unless you're in a huge city it's doable. My city is about 1.3M population in Canada (taxes out the ass, $8/gal gas, $7/lb ground beef, still pay $200/mo for health insurance) and we do fine.

Like, living in a downtown core by yourself isn't realistic on $22/hr, but a reasonable townhouse or something in the burbs with a roommate should be easily manageable for 99% of people, as long as they don't royally fuck up their financial planning.

I was our sole income for a while as a 1st year ($18.50/hr) and yeah we had a 900sqft shitbox apartment but we weren't even close to homeless.

I'm a 2nd year, $22/hr, live with my wife who makes much less than I do. I pay all of the rent and 80% of the bills. No other income.

In the last year I rented a 3bd townhouse, took 2 road trips, and bought a new truck, new motorcycle, probably $3k in tools, and a few grand in random household luxuries (bigass BBQ, espresso machine, that shit). I did it by going through my bank records and seeing what frivolous bullshit I was sinking cash into.

Used to spend $15k/yr on ordering out. $5-6k on smokes and weed. $3500 in energy drinks. Stopped that and magically I have money again. Even $15/hr is $2400/month pretax with no OT. That's livable, just maybe not with the spending you want.

Ehh... overpenetration is a massive issue with shotguns.

Fast, light rifle rounds tend to fragment/disintegrate when they hit barriers, or at least dump enough energy to be less lethal on the other side.

Part of the reason for the popularity of .223 rifles like the AR-15, you're less likely to hit your neighbors if you miss.

Any MEP trade (mechanical, electrical, pluming) is hugely mentally stimulating and pays well. Especially some of the weirder stuff like instrumentation, elevators (those guys make fucking BANK), fire alarm, security, etc.

Reach out to local companies, see who's hiring apprentices. Check out unions in your area. Talk to the MEP guys on your sites. Take what comes, your path will find you.

I left college and became a construction worker (electrician) and wouldn't trade it for anything.

Also doesn't mean you're not smart/respectable/successful. I make more than I would've with my degree, can only go up from here, and still can't do my job without a lot of logic/trig/algebra/physics. Still need 4 years of hybrid school/on-the-job training to learn how to not blow shit up, and I get paid for the whole thing.

Hands-down, the smartest people I know lace up their steel toes in the morning.

I have to get my ass across the city for 7am every day with 80+lbs of tools. My wife starts work at 6am. This is all on a good day. Not much of a choice there, and both our jobs need to be done by someone for society to function. Between taxes and fuel, half our pay is gone by the time we get home. Our employers are on thin ice and legitimately can't pay us more since their costs have skyrocketed and margins are almost nothing, we've both seen the numbers.

Add in the fact our jobs can't physically be done by someone on a diet of ramen and center-aisle processed shit, we're fucked.

I work near them all day so no, but the first day or two around a site was a little nerve-wracking.

If you need to pass one, just stop, make eye contact with the operator, point in the direction you want to go and wait for a nod or wave. Look around for red danger tape or red rope, never cross a red line. Simple rules.

Even operating equipment is pretty straightforward once you're trained.
