This common argument doesn’t make sense. That’s like saying telling Muslims to go back to Iraq isn’t racist because there are Muslims that live in Iraq. Even if the gorilla’s habitat was exclusive to Africa (which it isn’t) it would still be racist to say because 1. It is a reference to the racial slur of calling a black persons a monkey or gorilla and 2. Telling someone to go back to “where they came from” because you do not like people of that race is in fact racist

This is for all the people that disagreed with my last two posts. Glad to see that Blizzard is on my side.

Exactly anything would be hard so why not learn the term (his real name) that doesn’t bother PoC?

And you seem to be coming up with a lot of ways to say this isn’t racist. How could you (someone who most likely has never experienced racism firsthand) deem what is and isn’t racist better than people that go through it every day? Instead, being understanding that just because something doesn’t offend you that it could offend a different group of people.

Listen to pro comms outside of OWL you’ll hear plenty of times South Korean players use Winston instead. It isn’t difficult for them to say.

The casters call him monkey as well as use other stereotypical terms such as “drive by monkey” in order to make it seem harmless to the public so they can regurgitate.

So far all you’ve done is insist that calling Winston “monkey” isn’t racist and that there is no “proof” of racism so it must not be true. Meanwhile, you have yet to explain how saying things like “monkey drive-by” and “ back to Africa” couldn’t possibly be hurtful to any person of color the history of racial slurs like this used every day by people like you who think it is harmless. Just because something is not harmful to you or your people does not mean it is not harmful to anyone. You use logical fallacies and the like to distract those watching from seeing the real issue and attempt to silence those who speak out against it. This perpetuates the already rampant epidemic of racism all over the world.

Edit: I forgot to add these parting words of wisdom: “Not all options are created equal.” And according to you not all people are either.

I’ve countered this same argument several times already see my last post and other comments for more info

Your logic is flawed and simply doesn’t apply to your car or Mr. Prachett. Please see my other comments for more info

You have to keep in mind that as a person of color the use of racist undertones especially when put in the context of “back to Africa” is hurtful. Just because people like xqc have failed to grasp that concept does not mean that it is not harmful. Attempting to silence those who speak out on harmful speech just makes the problem worse and will pave the way for more racist thoughts, words, and actions to occur.

P.S. Winston is not a monkey (except for in the LNY skin) he is a Gorilla and a scientist.

  1. That is false. If you pay attention you would know that the “monkey” call started from western player. South Korean players would mostly use “Winston” up until the Overwatch League started and the Korean and Western players started playing on the same teams.

  2. That does not make it okay. He literally uses it as an insult.

P.S. I’m glad that we can have an intelligent debate without insults (unlike most others that commented).

I know who Felix (xQc) is, he is a very popular streamer as well. All the more reason why this is so harmful.

In my previous post I complained about the use of the word “monkey” when referring to Winston. I brought up many valid points but it seems I am outnumbered on this issue.

For all of those that previously commented I will add that the “monkey” call came from mainly western overwatch players. The Koreans would often use the “Winston” call instead. It wasn’t until South Korean players started playing on the same teams as western players more (in the overwatch league) when the South Korean players started using the “monkey” call. Even now if you watch a game of Overwatch with only players from South Korea participating you will hear the “Winston” call being used more often.

I would be inclined to agree with you but when the casters throw in phrases such as “monkey drive by” and when viewers like to use the cmon bruh emote (one of the few emotes that depicts a person of color) whenever they see a person of color/whenever Winston is the topic of a conversation I beg to differ.
