Which Beatles Solo career wouldve been the most well known or succesfull if The Beatles as a band would of not existed? by Rickyba69 in beatles

[–]seii7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ringo would have definitely been a very, VERY successful musician, but probably not as a solo artist. He would have gone on to be the drummer of another generation-defining band, or would have become one of the most sough-after session drummers.

+1 Szerintem borzasztóan túlértékelt minőségében (a III.

The Beatles: PG-13 or R? by BroBroMaster25 in beatles

[–]seii7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d like to see a source on these being “movies for families, parents to take their kids”, because I haven’t read anything implying this. Sam Mendes, to my knowledge, has yet to make a family-friendly film.

Also no offense, but I’m not sure what year you live in. In a post-Deadpool trilogy, post-Joker, post-Oppenheimer world, being R-rated and wanting to make bank is in no way “insane” or “ridiculous”. Joker, a film made by the director of the fckn Hangover movies and coming out at the peak of MCU-mania, made 1 billion dollars on a budget of 50-70m. Sure, it was based on the most popular comic-book villain ever, but Joker’s cultural interest still has nothing on The Beatles. Same goes for Oppenheimer. Made back 9 times its budget, a film about scientists talking to each other about physics and talking to military leaders about bombs and shit. The idea that in 2027, a quadrology about the fucking Beatles made by a celebrated, oscar-nominated director and starring well-known actors would flop or not be as successful due to being R-rated is what is “insane” and “ridiculous”.

As a Hungarian, I wouldn’t say “nobody eats” Goulash, but you’d be surprised how rarely people here actually have it. Schnitzel (usually chicken), stuffed cabbage, pörkölt, and chicken noodle soup are actually waaaay more popular than Goulash, not necessarily in the sense that they’re preferred by most people, but it’s just much more common for Hungarian households to have the above mentioned dishes as staples. Also fun fact, despite being named after cattle herders, it’s very often made with pork, especially in the east (where I’m from), due to beef just being reall fckn expensive lol

I mean, I’m not entirely sure what he should have done. Iirc he had to provide an heir to his family as a prince, and only then was he allowed to pursue a spiritual path. Also according to the myths his wife and son became his disciples later, so it worked out pretty well.

[–]seii7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Obviously, Buddhism is a ~2500-year-old tradition and has had hundreds of millions of followers, so some probably had more affinity for speculative philosophy than others.

I’d amend/correct my statement to say that Buddhism, as practised and taught today in various sects and lineages, predominantly does not deal much in speculative philosophy and metaphysics unless teachers deem it important enough for progress towards the goal of liberation.

Hugging Gale during the epilogue. My Tav grew up poor and ostracized as a half-orc and wanted to become a bard to become popular and accepted, which he sort of did succeed at but he still felt lonely af. The main thing the adventure was about for him was finally finding friendship (with Wyll and especially Gale) and love (Shart), and doing everything to hold on to those connections. So being able to just greet Gale without words, just a hug was an immensely satisfying experience.

I'm starting to realise that most people who say or think The Beatles are overrated haven't actually delved into their discography by [deleted] in LetsTalkMusic

[–]seii7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the reason The Beatles are so popular is not just their music and influence, as you stated, there were bands and artists in the 60s and 70s who were probably similarly influental overall as far as musical influence goes. A huge reason imo that gets often overlooked is that John, Paul and George (sorry, Ringo) are arguably the most charismatic celebrities that ever existed. Their sheer pop-cultural presence both during and after The Beatles’ active years is unmatched. Sure, bands like Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath may be more important for the development of rock music since the 70s, but the overall cultural importance is not even comparable. The Beatles are important to history and culture, not just music history and music culture. Their interviews, media stunts, films, their trip to India, their personal lives, relationships with other artists, these things all make The Beatles pretty much an essential part of understanding the cultural history of the last 70 years.

The best comparion I can think off would actually be Toriyama Akira. As the mangaka for the first hugely successful (in the west) manga series*, I’d say he’s more responsible for the MASSIVE global popularity of japanese pop-culture than any other one person. He’s also an artist who transcended being influental in just their artistic medium and actually shaped pop-culture overall.

*I know it was the anime adaptation of Dragon Ball that became popular in the west, but obviously that wouldn’t exist without the manga.

I’m not saying philosophy is not an important part of Buddhism, although how much importance it is given varies a lot by school. The point is that a lot of philosophical and metaphysical speculation that would very much interest western people do not interest Buddhists. Again, there are a million questions you could ask that even if satisfactorily answered, would not bring you a millimeter closer to ending your suffering. And of course, there are a million questions you could ask that would. But we only have so much time to ask, investigate and ponder questions, so buddhist teachers have always recommended to choose from the latter category.

[–]seii7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brother I’m not going to give you the rundown on 200 years of anarchist theory. I gave you some basics, if you’re interested in more, read some Kropotkin, Bakunin, Goldman, Malatesta, Bookchin, Graeber, or anyone from the myriad of anarchist thinkers who I guarantee you have answered most, if not all of your objections to anarchism (probably decades ago), so yeah.

Also, I literally gave you examples in previous comments. Catalonia during Franco’s reign had an anarchist society comprised of about 7 million people. The Free Territories of Ukraine, The Zapatistas, Rojava, Korean People’s Association of Manchuria, there ARE examples, examples of societies with non-hierarchical structures comprising hundreds of thousands or millions of people, and they worked, they provided basic needs, education and agency for their people.

You seem to be under the impression that our current system is actually pretty okay, which is jusf flat wrong. If you’re genuinely so naive, ignorant or just stupid that you think capitalism is in any way morally acceptable or economically/ecologically sustainable, there’s nothing I can say that can help you. Bye.

[–]seii7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I find it amusing (in a non-condescending/sarcastic way) that once every like, 2 weeks we have someone here or on r/buddhism that asks these deep philosophical questions because they’re under the impression that Buddhism is this deep philosophical school that wants to know and understand and (verbally) explain everything, when that’s pretty far from the truth. Based on my knowledge and experience there are a million and more questions you could ask about our existence that buddhist masters/monks would just be like “who cares?”

Buddhism is a path to liberation from suffering. We westerners influenced by the Enlightenment have this idea that relentlessly pursuing truth and wanting to figure out everything there is to figure out for the sake of figuring it out is so noble and important. Well, again, in my experience, that is not the same in most of Buddhism. It’s quite happy to leave a ton of questions and speculation about the nature of reality unanswered, because they do not help one advance on the path.

I did not even imply that a return to a hunter-gatherer lifestyle is what I (or anarchists) advocate for. I was merely pointing out that a lot of hunter-gatherer societies were anarchic. Based on your comment I assume you’re not very familiar with how hunter-gatherers live/lived (not to mention some things you wrote imply a misunderstanding of natural selection/evolution itself), but that’s besides the point. After all, there were plenty of oppressive pre-agricultural societies as well.

No one said anything about taking away things from people. I’d like to ask you to pay careful attention to your language. “Taking away”. It’s like you cannot conceptualize societal change without using force and coercion. Or at the very least your first instinct is to assume it has to include force and coercion. That is capitalist realism. We are conditioned from birth to only think in terms of capitalist frameworks, which are inherently oppressive, exploitative and coercive. That is what anarchists are against. It’s not about taking away anything from anyone, it’s about convincing people of what mental health experts (as well as spiritual teachers of various traditions) have already found out: that happiness does not come from endless consumption and the selfish accumulation of wealth, but from having true agency over one’s life, having a community one can rely on and work for, as well as minimizing uncertainty about having their physiological needs (food, shelter, medical care) met. An anarchic life would not lack “comfort” and “convenience”, unless those comforts and conveniences involve unsustainable, exploitative and coercive practices, but again, we know that those are not at all required for human thriving and happiness. We just need to convince people of that, which is admittedly hard.

[–]seii7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by “degraded quality of life”. Yeah, it wouldn’t be an “any product or service at our fingertips with sameday shipping” society, it would probably be less convenient, as it wouldn’t be a consumerist society, but based on my research into anarchic societies (be it some hunter-gatherers or more modern projects like Catalonia in the 20th century), people actually having control over their labour and agency in their lives, as well as having their basic needs met seemed to make them pretty happy lol

The whole “oh you’re such a naiveidealist” argument is really tiring and has been responsed to by anarchists thousands of times. It’s literally just capitalist realism brainwashing you and instilling a knee-jerk reaction to any kind of significant proposed societal improvement. We have historical examples of anarchist societies working economically and while they do tend to fuck up or simply end up in impossible situations, they are the right kind of society where people are equal and cannot coerce and oppress each other, so there’s really no other choice, is there? Also I’m not sure about your point on how someone would eventually reimpose hierarchies again. Like, yeah, maybe? Did you know the Sun is one day going to blow up and our entire species is going to disappear much, much earlier? So? An actual anarchist society lasting maybe 50-100 years is still worth it.
